Hard drives

Christmas shopping for geeks,  coming to the conclusion all HDs over 1Terrabyte have bad reliability.
Looks like 20% DOA/ infant mortality. That seems to be at least double the smaller ones.

I wonder if it isn't more a case of incompatibilit y (bios, etc) than anything else. Reading reviews, it also raises suspicions when the same person seems to get 2 or 3 doa drives in a row. Be that as it may, I have never had a 1+ terabyte drive, but I have had a coupla 1 terabyte WD (green) drive for a few years. Both have performed flawlessly.  Hard drive prices need to come back  down to earth (flooding in Thailand) before I'll buy any.

I don't think the current failure rate is different for any drives, including 1TB +. There was an issue with Seagate bricking a year or so ago. They fixed that with firmware.

As far as HDD prices dropping - it will be awhile, possibly over a year, if ever. i don't think we will see pre-flood prices for a VERY long time.

I wonder if this is a last gasp at some kinda profit (as much as it is from the flooding) before the SSDs take over?
