'83 Hot Air
« on: April 30 2010, 09:07:19 PM »
I've seen this poor old TR on the back lot of Route 66 Auto Sales two towns over in Moriarty for several months. The poor P.O.S. just rotting into the ground. Being as I could see that it was a hot air, I would give it a glance, but little more. Well, it breaks my heart to see *any* TR being allowed to just die. Today I had to run over to Moriarty on an errand and had time to kill. It occured to me that the aforementioned dealership hasn't appeared to sell a car in as long as I could remember and I was willing to bet they'd suck for a buck...so to speak. "Well, fuck it", I thought. Couldn't I just go look at it? So I went over there and got a peek at the thing. Wow...that car is R-O-U-G-H, rough. The interior is completely fucked and when I asked the guy, "Does it run?" he replied, "Uhhh...yeah...but...like shit." I asked him what he wanted for it...he gave the old "Make me an offer" line and I lied and said I wanted it for parts and so it really wasn't worth a damn to me...hows about $200? "What?!" he asks. "No, I don't make a dime off of the transaction unless I get $500". I (more or less) asked him if he was nuts and said that $200 was all I would go on the car. So I say, "Listen, I've seen this thing sitting back here for a long time. I didn't mean to insult you...tell ya what- if I see it sitting back here in a month or so maybe I'll give ya a ring and see if the $200 sounds a little better then" and I start walking to my truck. "Okay, hold up!" he says. "I've got a one time only offer for ya here...I'll flip a coin. If you win, the car is yours for $200, if I win you give me $300 for it". I heard myself agree to that and thought, "Fuck, my dumb self is gonna lose 100 bones to a christing quarter...". He pulls out a gambling chip from nearby Sandia Casino and shows me both sides. He flips it...I call tails in the air (tails always wins, right?)...and it hits the parking lot asphalt. Tails, bitch. So, in less than 5 minutes (literally) I went from, "Hey look, there's that Regal" to "Hey, look at my new Regal". About an hour later when I had to tell the lesser half about what I'd just done and where in the hell I'd figured the money was coming from she was a bit pissed. *But*, perspective is a tool that works well on women so I put it this way, "Look, I just got a car for $30 more than our power bill was last month!"...and here I sit typing out the story. P.S. I've never had a t-tops car before and (despite all the shit-talking I've heard about them) I've always wanted one. Hooray. Now let's see if I can even get this shitheap to roll.

Believe me, these are the most flattering pics I could possibly post...the dash is fucking thrashed (even missing the vents), the t-tops' weather stripping is literally hanging from the roof. And the interior door panels? ...Well, what door panels?

Notice in the pic of the hood there's a cross grave marker next to it...I didn't ask.

This was a steal from Peter to pay Paul sort of situation...

Why did I bring this lawn ornament home? gnttype.org says 3,732 T-Types were built in 1983 boasting a mind-blowing 190 horse and 280 ft. lbs. I'm gonna wanna scrutinize the RPO sticker to make sure if it even *is* a T-Type...the contents of the glove compartment would seem to indicate that a previous owner was a tad emblem-happy. It's got no battery, distributor cap or air filter. Front bumper is bent and the interior is full of leaves because the DS window is off the track. Nasty old purpled tint needs to be scraped out, etc.

Damn - it's not THAT bad. At least the body panels look decent. The bumper fillers look good  - there's your $200.00 right there. :).

Fire that beast up!

There was only a very small chance that thing would fire up.

This will be a fun adventure.

Film it for YouTube.  :tank:

You're already proficient at changing head gaskets, you should have that up and going in no time.

I heard that Poston's closed. But you can still get what you need for it.
