Weird clunk PS dash????
« on: August 26 2013, 03:18:26 PM »
OK you guys, here's a problem I've had with my car and it's starting to piss me off. For a while I've had a noise that seems to come from the PS dash, maybe behind the glove box area, maybe a little lower. It sounds like it could be an HVAC mixing door slamming or something like that. I could be completely off on that guess. It seems to happen randomly. It sounds like a hollow clunk, not really metallic. I don't think it's something loose because it does it going down a smooth road. At least we think they smooth here in NH. Is there a vacuum dashpot or something that could make a hollow clunking noise. I have felt around and not found anything loose. And no, it's not something in the glovebox....I emptied it already. In fact, I did that first..... Thanks in advance....

the most common problem is the insulation foam around the doors begins to deteriorate and the glue sticks the door shut.  In this case, the air flow does not immediately come out the correct door for a bit...and then suddenly there is a big bang and the air starts flowing as it should...As you did not describe the air not flowing properly, I assume that is not your problem but it sure makes noise when that problem happens!  Sounds like someone dropped the kitchen sink.

Thanks for the reply Steve. I have my A/C shut off because I'm low on R12 and the season for A/C is almost over around here. I don't want to waste my last pound of R12. I have been leaving it on "vent" so I'm not sure if it would make the noise. It sure sounds like something in that area, though. I may have to hang upside down in the passenger seat while my wife drive the car, once she starts speaking to me again.... :rolleyes; . We don't have a seat belt law around here so I won't have to explain my way out of that one. I wonder if a rotten vacuum hose could cause intermitant mixer door operation? It sure is annoying.

it is usually the door that directs the air to the dash vents from the floor vents.  A leaky hose can cause erratic operation

I'll look closer under the dash and see what's up. Thanks Steve.
