Check engine light blinking and car running rough?
« on: August 29 2006, 11:44:56 PM »
Well i went to install my Scan Master the other day and before i messed with anything i descided to start the car because it has sat for about 2 weeks.  When i turned the key to the on position i noticed tht the check engine light was flashing on and off very fast.  I checked to see if the car was going to start.... and it did it fired right up like it was new.  Then i noticed that it ran like crap  like it had a monster cam in it.  I gave it a little gas and it blew white smoke out of the tail pipes.  Any ideas because i am at my wits end.

Oh damn, I don't know. Scratches head. Check your oil for water and water for oil. White smoke is usually a head gasket. I don't know why the Check Engine light would flash all crazy though.

Sounds like its in limp mode. Check to see if your chips in all the way and correctly.
Maybe try another chip in it if that doesn't work. The white smoke is probably related, but it could be signs of something worse, wait and see why the CEL is flashing.
Also try checking the fuses, my grand prix did something like that about 8 years ago.
One of the ECM fuses was only partially blown, so that it was making and breaking the internal electrical connection thus causing the CEL to flash.

Well i checked the battery and it is fine.  I checked it with a tester and when it was put under a load it checked out fine.  I will check the chip and fuses. The only thing that aggravates me is that 2 weeks ago it ran fine.

Ok i checked the wires and some were loose( i guess) so i reset the wires and hooked the battery back up.  Same Thing happened.  I reseated the chip and still nothing.  So i grabbed my old chip put it in and the engine light stopped flashing and the car started.  The only problem now is the chip is for my old setup.  The new motor is not stock at all...so the car is running like crap but i have one problem fixed.

You're a damn genious Rob. It's CalPak right?

Limp mode is from the Cal-Pac. Ya know, that just made me think of something.
I wonder if anyone makes a custom Cal-Pac for different size injectors in case
the prom chip fails ? Could you imagine what would happen with a car that has
60's had a prom failure with a cal pac designed for 28's ? Thats a shitload of
fuel going through the engine!  :bigeyes;

i got it from Jay at Jays GN and i think he gets his stuff from Caspers.  I like to do business with him because he is a straight up guy.  I think that with sitting in the car and it being 100+ degrees with the car not moving may have hurt the chip or it just went bad.

Hook up the Scan Master and see what codes it throwing, but like Rob said chip is more than likely bad. Shot Jay a email, I'm sure he'll stand behind it.
