General Auto Tech / ramblings of a new engine

http://www.empirenet.com/pkelley2/DynamicCR.html

Now that I have the Regal mobile I have been studying up on some of my other back burner projects. First is an intake gasket swap on the designated tow vehicle, and a 4l60e overhaul for the other burb that quit shifting. Then there is the GS.

I caught the darn thing on fire last time I tried to put it in the trailer so I ended up moving it on our open trailer. This lead me to the thought that maybe it needs an overhaul. I drive it pretty had as it is my first car. It used a LOT of oil, but then the rings off one of the pistons were in the pan and that piston had one big groove about half way around and a lot of carbon on the top. Probably 15:1 in that hole. We polished the crank, git a replacement piston and new rings n bearings and a gasket kit and put her back together. She worked well until I bought the 84 t-type.

I read about some 6.8 long BBC rods. These have a .990 pin end and a 2.20 big end so you have the crank offset ground to stroke it a bit. And with the custom piston you can get close to a zero deck without too much off the block(like .020 to clean it up). This sounds like the way to go and gives you 470 inches as a bonus to the stronger rods.

I kind of like a "stock" iron head(im cheap), but to take advantage of the extra cubes m kind of leaning to some ta stage 2 . This kills the sleeper with manifolds so I'm torn.

Any thoughts on a cam for this setup?

Computer/Tech Support / The desktop was pokey...
« on: October 26 2014, 10:36:58 AM »
I'm kinda(ok, clam making pearls) cheap. I'm not sure I squeak when I walk but I never really listened for it.

Our cobbled together desktop that I got going after the power supply in our windows 7 machine quit had become pretty slow. I downloaded and ran some free(seeing a trend yet?) stuff to see if I could fix the problem. I searched over a tb.com to see what I could find and our good friend Dan(notacarlo, who bolted Texas against advice not to) had posted about the ccleaner. I googled it, downloaded it and ran it.

WOW , what a difference.
I guess it deletes a bunch of temp files, cookies and other non essential stuff. I also ran the part that fixes the registry. 111 errors. ran it again a couple more times to get the stragglers(about 3-4 each run until it came up empty).

Now we are screamin along as fast as an athahlon 3200+ and windows xp sp2 can carry us.

I thought it was the least I could do after they hooked me up for free to reccomend it to others.

Are there other free things to try? I tried another registry tool but all that got me was some missing files I had to search up and reinstall.

A/C, Heating and Cooling / Compressor making noise
« on: October 21 2014, 11:02:39 AM »
Compressor making noise. I sprayed it with wd40 and that quieted it down. I haven't used the ac in at least twenty years. I'm sure it needs a compressor but that ain't in the budget this year. I've been googling and I'm not sure if I should try to replace the pulley bearing or just buy the A/c delete pulley setup and go with it until I can afford a new compressor. Wife went to eye doctor, needs kateract surgery to the tune of $3900. No ac for me for a while but I do need to drive the car.

Any thoughts? I think I can use the loan a tool thing at az. I have a 3 jaw puller just nee the clutch puller and clutch installer tools if the google results are what I'm going to do. Also does anyone have the bearing number I will need for a stock compressor pulley.

TIA

IHADAV8 Playground / So, we took a trip to the track...
« on: September 29 2014, 03:30:15 PM »
So, an old friend and charter member of the lone star performance Buick club, Terry Bunton had allerted me a few weeks ago he would be travelling in from the Abilene area to attend the tmccc at north star dragway yesterday. So we made plans to attend. Along with terry, Stan Davis brought out his 87 d84 Limited. It was looking very nice and running decent.

Now, I know I have been out of the loop for quite some time and Stan showed me the cats a$$ in chips. He was adjusting his tt chip with the scanmaster and gas pedal. Now that was slick and the first I'd seen of it. So I've been perusing Erics forum and noticed this works on several of his chip versions. I think I got one with a 5.6 on it in the deal where I bought the 42lb injectors. I will look when I get home. This opens up a whole new world to me. This is going to be fun. As soon as I get good I'm saving for the sd2 so I can ditch the maf.

Anyway, stan's car is nice with the sofa front bench and a cf5, all decked out in chrome.

Also met a nice fellow named Paul with a strong running Gold GS

I didn't run our car. We are on some old rear tires and not really trusting the trans yet but it shift well and didn't miss a beat knocking down just over 22mpg on that tank.

So, my mil had a car that came with the orange gm gasket death coolant. The car developed an over heating condition, so she took it to see about repair. $800 to replace the intake gaskets. One must pretty much strip the top and accessories off to get the intake off so I guess I understand the estimate. Everyone has to make a living. So, anyway this was about 3 yrs ago. She bought a new car and parked this one. Fast forward, my daughter was "given"this car. My son took on the task of r&r all that needed off and replace the gaskets. My way of getting him to know he doesn't want to wrench on cars for a living and keep going to HVAC school.

A couple things we learned along the way. The bolts that hold the manifold on are tty. So if I would have known that I would have gotten them in the kit. When the gasket set I ordered arrives it was on the package that the bolts are tty and needed to be replaced. So, back to the intrrwebz to order the bolts.

Next snafu came after he reassembled  and the fuel line leaked like a sieve. I'm not sure where the oring went(he claimed there wasn't one), but we needed one. On to the intrrwebz to research. Found several  kits and went to my local oreily  site. Found a local store with the kit and stopped by after work yesterday. The counter man let me see the kit and compare it to his oring assortment. I measured up two of each. Why was funny to me was the bwd box contained an acdelco bag with two orings in it. Asking price you say? $20.55
The four orings I bought, $.59 ea.

IHADAV8 Playground / yb sold out
« on: January 17 2014, 04:19:24 PM »
So, yellowbullet.c om sold out.

I have a little experience with the buyer as they bought out a local mustang board I frequented. They injected lots of ads and some new unfamiliar moderation. This pretty much ran most off and one started a new similar site. Same has happened to yb . A link for those who care. I like it for the wild west attitude and total lack of respect for decency.

They have garnered over 3500 members in three days I though that in itself was pretty impressive.

Knowledge Base Articles, Submissions, and Comments / It sprung a Leak
« on: September 16 2013, 11:05:08 PM »
Well, the original tank developed a leak. I had previously dropped it to install a Red Armstrong pump many moons ago. I had been told that the rubber strap cushions hold dirt and rust out the tank so I painted the tank to thwart that. That's why there are blue "racin" stripes on the old one.

The tank was involved in a transportation incident. I had the car on a trailer. We were moving so I had a "few" other things on the trailer too. I was glad I bought the 18' . I had strapped my two wheel dolly under the rear of the car on the 2' dovetail. Little did I know the movement of the car would cause the tank to receive a dent as the two wheeler didn't give way.  Live n learn.

It developed a drip so I ordered a new Chinese tank as it was cheap(<$125 shipped to my door). Support the vendors I know, I know. Next time when I can. This tank has a 3" deep pan in it so I guess it will work.

From the top of the pan

From the bottom of the pan.

Pulled the hanger out and the pulsator replacement tube was a little worse for wear.

I am searching up a replacement. The local auto parts purveyor only had a hose that was rated to 50psi. I declined that and we played twenty questions. He thought it "should work", I didn't want to drop the tank again so we shall continue to search.

More when we do more.

Since it seems they local board requires logging in to view I am posting this over here for easier access.

A little back ground, my car has lead a rough life. The original powermaster went out when the car had pretty low miles(like 30k or so), but i had it replace with another powermaster to the tune of about $800. I didn't know any better at the time. It worked until about 125k miles. When it would no longer assist braking it was decided to swap to a hydroboost. I have the hydroboost on two GM trucks and it was on the 84 T-Type I traded in on the current T. I didn't like the look of the big iron master cylinder so I opted for the Cadillac unit with the plastic reservoir. Funny because I can remember thinking, "why would anyone want a plastic master cylinder when you can have the security of a nonleaking iron one when I put new ones on vehicles like my GS and Blazer. I guess perceptions evolve.

I did some reading and ordered the parts recommeneded at the http://www.cedarcrestspeedlab.com/techarticles.html?col7=open#CollapsiblePanel7  . This link also outlines the pressure line mod that is required to fit that hose onto the 86-87 power steering pump. Ill include pix of how I accomplished it.I ordered the parts for an 84 TR from rockauto.com. I hear that the cores are getting scarce so I have been picking them up when I see one for sale. These hydroboost units dont have an accumulator like the newer astro van pieces but they are bolt in. I think the accumulator gives a false sense of security as I have had the Suburban chuck a tensioner pulley thereby loosing the belt(and power steering pump). You got non assisted steering and non power brakes in a hurry, and this truck has the accumulator.. SO, inspection of the pulleys and belt are in order at each oil change to prevent this scenario.

These are the hoses I ordered.

Booster

Master Cylinder

As you can see the hydroboost came with the actuating rod already on it.

Locally, I bought some additional pieces, including a brass tee, and some trans cooler line to tee the return into the power steering return line.

A line wrench so as not to round off and fasteners. This was a cheap one from autozone. I called around but was unsuccessfull, and made a trip by sears and harbor freight with no luck. I didn't see a tool truck so I bought this one and it worked fine.

A/C, Heating and Cooling / What tools are needed?
« on: August 11 2013, 11:31:32 AM »
So... I'm reading up on this 152a conversion for my vehicles. I'm pretty handy(If you're not hansome, you better be handy, Red Green) and Ive added 134a to vehicles before and they blew cool again for a while. My stuff is generally older. Nothing under 100k miles. Ive never gotten into an a/c system as I was always told you had to have special tools and then they started not selling r12 to us commoners so I just never learned.

This brings us to now. I want to get the a/c in several of my vehicles, including the T, up and functioning. I read that it can be accomplished with 152a office duster. Seems simple enough. Problem is I don't have any of the specialized tools for an activity like that.

So i make a trip through amazon.com to see just what I can find. I think I need a vacuum pump and a set of gauges and probably a can tap for the duster cans.
http://www.amazon.com/Mastercool-85530-3-IN-1-Mount-Valve/dp/B0002SQLGC/ref=pd_sim_auto_8

So the question surfaces, do I need a two stage pump or will a single do? How much cfm does it need to pull? Im in the set that likes to buy it right and buy it once and have it last a lifetime.
http://www.amazon.com/Robinair-15500-VacuMaster-Vacuum-Pump/dp/B000O1C47M/ref=pd_sim_auto_14
http://www.amazon.com/Robinair-15115-VacuMaster-Single-Stage/dp/B005CO9FDW/ref=pd_sim_auto_18

Then comes the gauges. Lots of options there too. I think I'd like a set with a carrying case to protect them when not in use.
http://www.amazon.com/R134A-Manifold-Gauge-Set-85530/dp/B000LDPTR0/ref=sr_1_12?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1376233144&sr=1-12&keywords=Mastercool

Any suggestions are welcome.

TIA

Also thinking I'd like one of these to blow out the lines and such.

Transmissions / Gonna try a diy overhaul, or two
« on: September 30 2012, 10:46:18 PM »
I have been ramping up to do one of these for years. I bought my car new and have had trans probs pretty much the whole time. After the dealer cancelled my warranty and I got to pay for my own a local shop talked me into a 700r4. He build several 2004r units but was better at getting the 700r4 to live. It worked good. Unfortunately, I blew a head gasket about ten years ago and the car sat. Fast forward, i got the hg replaced but the fp was whacked so a new fp regulator got her running good. I replaced the window sweeps so I could drive it. Unfortunately, the power master quit and I did a hydroboost conversion. Wow, It never had brakes or stopping power like it does now.

This brings us to a few weeks ago. Trans started rattling. Could be torque converter or who knows. I have wanted to build a 2004r to go back in. It has a 27 spline higher stall converter so it will be removed and taken to be cut and cleaned. I bought several 2004r units used and think I can put one together. The one we chose to try first is a piece for a Cadillac with an AA code.

AA code on tail shaft and valve body

Might be the reason this one was at the yard. The accumulator spring came out in three pieces.
Plate was a little marred but I think it can be reused.

We will be replacing the stator shaft with a hardened piece.

Pulled the pan and ready to get the tc lockup solenoid off so we can pull the pump.

]

Got the vb, accumulator pistons, and the tc lockup solenod off but it got dark so I pulled her up into the garage.

More when we get more done.
