General Buick Tech / Re: Rear Lift
« on: July 29 2014, 06:09:46 PM »
I had actually replaced the body bushings and just remembered that the passenger side rear one was rusted through the body and had to leave it.  So, it's sitting about 1/2 inch lower.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll probably go that route.

I just put new rims and tires on my my 84 TType and the wider tires are very close to the outer rear lip.  In looking at the car, the rear still sags even with new springs and shocks.  I would like to raise the rear about 1/2 to 1 inch.  Can anyone recommend the best way to do this?

As always, thanks for all input.

General Auto Tech / Re: 84 Lear Siegler seat Bun?
« on: July 06 2014, 10:21:12 AM »
I got the seats off of ebay 9 years ago and they were in mint condition.  However the fabric has worn a lot and needs replacing.  As far as I can tell, the buns are in good shape, but they are 30 years old.  So, I figured if I'm going to replace the upholstery, I might as well replace the buns while I'm at it.  It's starting to look like the buns are not going to be replaced.

I have been looking to re-upholster my 84 Lier Siegler seats for some time now but I'm thinking that replacing the bun would be wise as well.  Problem is I cannot find any buns that will fit the Lier Siegler seats.  Kirban's and Gbodyparts don't have any that will fit.  The closest I could find were these:  http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/products/1982%252d83-Camaro-LS-%E2%80%9CCouture%E2%80%9D-Lowback-Buckets-%7B47%7D-Pace-Car-Seat-Foam,-Sold-in-Pairs-ONLY.html

The driver's side looks like the right size with the cut out for the knee support, but they are only sold in pairs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Pyro6, I should have mentioned that I'm keeping the same ring gear too.  So, the ring gear and pinion should be matched up.

Scoobum, I thought that everything would match up as well, but putting the left shim in was incredibly tight.  I'm thinking that there must be a couple of thousands difference, probably because all the bearings and the differential are new.  Not sure.  With there being some nasty storms here right now, I'm not able to work on it.  I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

I'm thinking of just using the same shim on the right side and replacing the left side shim with one a few thousands thinner as the backlash was very little.

I got the install kit at justdifferenti als.com.  I'm not doing the pinion gear as it looked like it was in perfect shape (imagine that).  I ended up having to take the differential out before I could check the pattern.  The differential was way too tight to do that.  Now, I'm just going back to basics.  I found a Youtube video on how to determine the proper amount of shim.  I'm going to try that out first then I'll go with the checking out the pattern.

Here is the vid link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpOMSt2iEA0

Thank you for all your help guys.

Gentlemen:  Thanks for all the input.  This is definitely a new thing for me as I have never done this and I was hoping to never have to.

You are correct Steve, there is absolutely no backlash at all.  This was the same way when I pulled it apart, hard to turn and absolutely no backlash.  Looks like I'll be looking up the spec for backlash.  A fine part from gbodyparts.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, thought so.  I'm going to take it apart tomorrow after work.  Thanks for the help.

General Buick Tech / Differential Install
« on: April 13 2014, 05:03:08 PM »
Well, got the new diff and all associated parts.  I have gotten all the seals and bearing installed and just finished the differential install.  I used the instructions for Posi Conversion on gnttype.org to help me with the install.  I installed all the shim and the driver's side was pretty tight and I had to tap in the shim which was stated in the instructions.

Now that I have everything in, I'm ready to do the marking compound test, but I have one question first:  How tight is the differential supposed to be?  It's a bit hard to turn.  One way is pretty easy, but the other way is pretty tight and I have to use both hands to get it turned.  Is this normal?

General Buick Tech / Re: GBODY PARTS....
« on: March 29 2014, 07:15:48 PM »
Well, I decided not to buy from Gbodyparts.com .  The story goes like this:  I got a complete posi rear end from Brian about a year ago.  I basically traded it for my original rear, the new posi that I had gotten and some other parts.  He pretty much made out in the trade, but no problem since I got my posi rear.  He said it was newly rebuilt.  Well, I installed it and the seals leaked, real bad and ruined the brake shoes.  I took the rear apart to change the axle seals and low and behold, the entire rear wasn't just pooched, it was pure trash.  The posi diff's gears were worn and splintering badly.  The axles were literally twisted at the splines.  I had to cut the diff pin and C-Clips out.  So, now I have to rebuild the entire rear which I have never done before.  I'll figure it out though.

I bought all the parts from other venders like Autoplicity and saved over 80 bucks then if I would have bought them from Gbody.  I'm beginning to think that TRUST is a thing of the past.

Good luck guys in finding your parts.  I'll post where I find my parts from.

General Buick Tech / Re: Differential Pinion Gear Shaft removal

Well, finally got that pin out.  I had to cut it out piece by piece.  It was pretty pooched too.  Turned out the entire rear end is pooched; axles, bearings, seals, you name it.  Full rebuild is in the works.  Thanks for all the advice.

PacecarTA, yes, I removed the retainer bolt.  The pin end didn't snap and came out rather easily.  However, I can tell that this shaft is pretty old and has been through a lot.  The two inches that I have gotten out shows that the pin is very rough and gouged.  I'm thinking that the pin has seen a lot of races.

I'm thinking that I'm going to have to cut the two inches that I have already been able to get out, then rotate the differential so I can use a punch to bang more of the pin out, then rotate and see where I'm at.

Any thoughts???

Although I haven't ordered from Gbodyparts.com in a while, I'm pretty saddened to hear this about Brian.  He has always done me right.  The last time I ordered from him, I did have to call him a week later to ask where my order was, but he got it shipped right away.  I have always trusted Brian and I'm hoping that this is a very short lived rut that he is in.  .

I'm going to place an order with Gbodyparts.com next week.  I'll let you all know how it goes....

Is there enough room to do that?  I guess I should have mentioned that I'm doing this inplace with the car's rear end on jack stands and the drive shaft and all still on.

I'm trying to remove my rear axles in order to replace the axle seals.  Problem is, the pinion gear shaft is pretty pooched and I cannot get the damn thing out.  I have knocked it out about two inches but had to turn the pin around so it doesn't get stuck inside the housing.  I have had no progress pulling the pin the rest of the way out.  Does anyone have any advice on getting this pin out?

I appreciate all advice.
