$5.37! That's what the kid behind the counter at Tim Horton's said to me. I dug into my pocket and pulled out some lint and two dimes and something that used to be a Lifesaver. Having already handed the kid a five-spot, I started to head back out to the truck to grab some change when the kid with the Elmo hairdo said the worst thing anyone has ever said to me. He said, "It's OK. I'll just give you the senior citizen discount."

I turned to see who he was talking to and then heard the sound of change hitting the counter in front of me. "Only $4.68" he said cheerfully.

I stood there stupefied. I am 56, not even 60 yet? A mere child! Senior citizen?

I took my food and walked out to the truck wondering what was wrong with Elmo. Was he blind? As I sat in the truck, my blood began to boil. Old? Me?

I'll show him, I thought. I opened the door and headed back inside. I strode to the counter, and there he was waiting with a smile.

Before I could say a word, he held up something and jingled it in front of me, like I could be that easily distracted! What am I now? A toddler?

"Dude! Can't get too far without your car keys, eh?" I stared with utter disdain at the keys. I began to rationalize in my mind. "Leaving keys behind hardly makes a man elderly! It could happen to anyone!"

I turned and headed back to the truck. I slipped the key into the ignition, but it wouldn't turn. What now? I checked my keys and tried another. Still nothing.

That's when I noticed the purple beads hanging from my rear view mirror. I had no purple beads hanging from my rear view mirror.

Then, a few other objects came into focus. The car seat in the back seat. Happy Meal toys spread all over the floorboard. A partially eaten doughnut on the dashboard.

Faster than you can say ginkgo biloba, I flew out of the alien vehicle.

Moments later I was speeding out of the parking lot, relieved to finally be leaving this nightmarish stop in my life. That is when I felt it, deep in the bowels of my stomach: hunger! My stomach growled and churned, and I reached to grab my coffee, only it was nowhere to be found.

I swung the truck around, gathered my courage, and strode back into the restaurant one final time. There Elmo stood, draped in youth and black nail polish. All I could think was, "What is the world coming to?"

All I could say was, "Did I leave my food and drink in here"? At this point I was ready to ask a Boy Scout to help me back to my vehicle, and then go straight home and apply for Social Assistance benefits.

Elmo had no clue. I walked back out to the truck, and suddenly a young lad came up and tugged on my jeans to get my attention. He was holding up a drink and a bag. His mother explained, "I think you left this in my truck by mistake."

I took the food and drink from the little boy and sheepishly apologized. She offered these kind words: "It's OK. My grandfather does stuff like this all the time."

All of this is to explain how I got a ticket doing 85 in a 40. Yes, I was racing some punk kid in a Prius. And no, I told the officer, I'm not too old to be driving this fast.

As I walked in the front door, my wife met me halfway down the hall. I handed her a bag of cold food and a $300 speeding ticket. I promptly sat in my rocking chair and covered up my legs with a blankey.

The good news was I had successfully found my way home.

Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list. Notice the larger type? That's for those of us who have trouble reading.

P.S. Save the earth....... It's the only planet with beer!!!!

General Buick Tech / Stock Timing Chain Replacement
« on: July 01 2011, 01:27:48 PM »
someone sent me a link regarding a stock replacement timing chain.

This would be a good choice as it will work with the factory tensioner and be good for another 100,000 miles

After both suffering from depression for a while, me and the wife

were going to commit suicide yesterday.

But strangely enough, once she killed herself, I started to feel a lot better.

So I thought, Fuck it, I'll soldier on..!

I order a lot of stuff from Summit as well.  They have outstanding turn around on orders.  They might be even faster than the Rock.

General Buick Tech / Fuel Pump dying
« on: June 06 2011, 04:19:07 PM »
That F series of Walbro pump that I bought right before the wave of failures became known decided to die on me just after I got back to town after a 100 mi roundtrip this morning.  I used the alky test button to make it back to the house.

After it cooled down, it started working again tho the pressure was down about 3 psi.

I guess that was why it was looking lean at idle on the 02s this morning.

I decided to replace it with the Deatschwerks pump that came on the scene about the first of the year.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I never looked at the thermometer yesterday.  Ed told me he had seen on the news that it was a record day out here.  I guess he got it right because the paper said 108 degs yesterday.  Sure glad I did not look because I would have never gone outside.

Cooling down to 105 today.  Damn glad a cold snap is setting in.

so we pulled the engine out of the Challenger.... discovered one of the inner fenders was rusted out over a large area and covered with bondo on one side and undercoating on the other.

Then we knocked off the angle iron patches to see what was under them.  Whoever welded them with a stick welder is a worst dirt dauber than me...anyway, this is what we found...I guess I know what the front end was so flexible

IHADAV8 Playground / bondo
« on: April 27 2011, 11:28:15 PM »
got the engine pulled out of the Challenger today.  Got to looking at the crack in one of the inner fenders and realized there was bondo under the paint around the crack...seems the inner fender is paper thin under the bondo....they just troweled it out and painted over it in the past....beginn ing to think the whole car is held together with bondo and undercoating.. ..

Being the inner fender is a structural piece that holds the upper control arm mount, I guess I understand why it feels even more like a flexible flyer after I installed the Hotchkis suspension....

get hard to find one for the Buicks.  Most are listed for both na and turbo cars...origina lly, the turbo was a bit heavier.  Not sure if the balance was different or not given that the turbo cars had heavier pistons.  Most say not.

Pioneer lists a separate number for the turbo cars and that is what Webber sells.  Twenty cheaper on Amazon.

Mike is out of the CAT sfi rated oriental specials.

Someone selling a so called sfi unit on ebay for 40$....hmmmmmmmmm

gonna go the Pioneer route, I think.  Kinda hate to go used in case I get one that has been abused like mine :D

On another note, I just noticed my Hotchkis bars for the challenger are for an A body and not an E body Challenger...L OL   so goes the car life.

IHADAV8 Playground / Fires
« on: April 17 2011, 03:01:24 PM »
Damn, wind and fire is a bad combination.

San Angelo, 45 miles NW of me has come very close to evacuation orders a couple of times in the past week as wind has pushed the fire right up to the edge of the city.  Fortunately, the wind has changed a couple of times and moved it in another direction.  Friday, we had about half mile visibility from the smoke being blown in.  San Angelo, itself, is covered in ash.

I think they said yesterday that more than 135,000 acres had burned.

Other fires going as well in the area.  Had six here in this country after lightning strikes at the beginning of the week.  More up north around Abilene and Lubbock.

Between our fires and the tornados across the south, this has not been a good week.
