General Auto Tech / Injector Cleaning at Home

Thought this was interesting...

DIY Fuel Injector Cleaning & Repair

Quote
This is the end result of a few hours of work and $60 because I didn't have a 1/4" NPT tap in any of my kits. I could have done this for less-than $40. The BG products were donated to the cause.

Tech info:
The REASON you want to use 20 PSI is precisely because of how peak-hold type injectors work. The injector signal sends a 4v spike to open a peak-hold type injector quickly, then maintains its open condition with only 1 volt. Really, it's a current thing and there's a longer explanation, but that's it in a nutshell. When you put the injector in its operating pressure, it takes more than a AA battery to open it, but you don't want to sustain that much current with a momentary switch and your expensive injectors. This isn't in the video because this warning wouldn't be as clear. Unless you can simulate the injector pulse precisely, don't try it. 1.5v is enough to open it below its operating pressure. If you open it and THEN apply pressure, you can flow as much pressure as you can throw at it.

I don't discourage anyone from getting their injectors professionally cleaned and balanced, but in my case, I didn't feel that was necessary.

In my first video, I thanked the seller for these injectors and happy to know I got a great deal on high quality parts. My gratitude is even greater because I had problems with them. It gave me an opportunity to help others troubleshoot these kinds of problems when purchasing used parts. A different idiot might have blamed the seller for peddling crap, demanding their money back... but that would only be because they didn't even know what they were looking at.

This particular idiot knows what high quality parts RC injectors are and how to clean 'em. $250 + $60 still means I saved about $150 on a brand new set. We all benefit because I bought these and I'm grateful! Let the good times roll.

General Buick Tech / Non-Projected Tip Spark Plugs for Stock Heads
« on: June 28 2012, 12:50:13 PM »
Just as the subject says I am looking for some non-projected tip plugs to fit the stock heads on the LC2. I currently have NGK UR5s in the engine and they were working fine. However, logic states that we should be considering non-projected tip plugs... hell, my LSx cars and Vortec headed SBC all use non-projected tip plugs from the factory.

So if you can post up some part numbers and heat ranges it would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Ladies and germs,

I am presenting you, my loyal followers or self-loathing haters, with an opportunity to dress like yours truly in this fine garment for the lofty sum of $15 + actual shipping (3% PayPal fees will be applied as required). While the picture shows a black t-shirt I will be getting them on a charcoal material as faded black looks like poop over time; and the “motorhead” logo should be a touch larger too.

Think about it… you can use it as a t-shirt like God intended, as toilet paper, line your bird cage or even use it as shop rag; the options are absolutely endless and only subject to your limited imagination!

Hurry up and shoot me a PM with your size (intended method of payment, and Zip Code) as only 15 t-shirts will be made in the initial run (maybe more if an overwhelming demand… err… demands it). Note there is a 2.5 week lead time once the order is complete, so don’t get all pissy if you don’t have it the next day.

***CAUTION*** BAMF factor not guaranteed – although being mistaken for “motorhead” may get you laid. Gotta remember to warn my wife that there is more than one of these shirts out there... and to not bed down every hot looking guy or gal she see in this awesome t-shirt.***CAUTION***

General Buick Tech / The All About My Monte Carlo SS Thread
« on: January 16 2012, 11:54:26 AM »
Just thought I would share some highlights/milestones in my on going TT/EFI build for my MCSS. Basically it is going to be a twin turbo 355 SBC, with a 200-4R and a set of 4.56s in the back. Full details are here: http://www.theturboforums.com/smf/the-turbo-'builds'-board/'87-monte-carlo-ss-ttefi-build/ (you may have to sign up to see the pics) because rewriting this over and over is lame.

But, if you have questions just ask. Comments will be kept to yourself... damn peanut gallery.

General Buick Tech / Fuel Injection Return Line Pressure?
« on: December 14 2011, 07:54:11 AM »
If there is typically 35-70psi of pressure on the feed side of the fuel system in an early GM-style fuel injection system; what is the pressure on the return side after the regulator?

I ask because I am planning out the fuel system for my TT EFI SBC build in my Monte Carlo and I would like to use the stock carb feed line ~5/16" as the system return. Not that the size (flow) is the concern, nor the material (25yr old steel). However, I am not overly keen on disconnecting the entire length of the line from tank to engine cross member to gain access to the clamps holding the rubber line which are currently tucked inside said cross member.

So if the return side pressure is approximately 15psi or less then the stock rubber line is more than suitable, no?

Yes, I am this lazy.

This is only the second time that we've taken (my wife) Natasha's '02 B4C to the track in the 4 years we've had it. The first time out - stock - it ran 13.2@105mph on a peg-leg diff out of a V6 car holding 3.08 gears. Since then it has only had cat deletes added, some mild suspension work, 4.10s w/a posi and tuned by me on crappy 91 octane. All the other drivetrain running gear is stock including the torque converter.

Yesterday it went 12.64 @ 111mph on a 1.9 60' on street tires using a completely stock LS1 long block - less the mods below. The car is a "point and shoot" daily driver - Natasha jumped in it and ran 12.8 @ 110+mph with little trouble.

Also, I should point out we were running around newer 5.0s and a supercharged (6.1) SRT8 Challenger which were using drag radials - all day long. With a converter, sticky tires and a higher rev limit this car might be that bit quicker... but, that would undermine the daily driver practicality of the car.

General Buick Tech / Warped Axle Flange?
« on: September 14 2011, 08:20:34 PM »
I am showing ~0.025-30" run out at the axle flange, which becomes ~0.050" at the outter edge of the rotor, which then translates into the undulating caliper that runs out ~0.035" (see video).

I am willing to bet it has been like this since last March when I swapped the axle studs.

Me thinks I need a new axle. Should I figure to stop driving on this until I get a replacement?

General Buick Tech / Normal Temperature of an ECM?
« on: September 01 2011, 02:45:24 PM »
Does anyone know what the proper operating temp of the factory ECM is? Mine feels rather hot to the touch and I am looking to see if this is unsual.

From what I have read online it is hit or miss among brands as to what is acceptable and what leads to failure.

I am strongly considering adding a 3" brushless DC computer fan to the case to pull cool air across the internals.

General Buick Tech / My "All About My Buick" Thread
« on: June 07 2011, 08:40:17 PM »
Per Steve Wood's advice I am starting my very own thread about my very odd Buick Turbo T (aka. The White Elephant). Here's a build thread on another site: http://www.xceedspeed.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183420 ; you may have to join to see the attachments.

Current mods include (but, are not limited to) the following very financially draining list of parts:

Stock LC2, MAFT Pro (in SD) w/Caspers PnP Harness, Extender Pro, LC-1, PL, EGT Amp, Hi-Boost Solenoid, Oil & Fuel Pressure Transducers, PowerPlate, T63E, Low-Z 83pph Injs, FMIC w/2.5" Pipes, 4" "MAF" Pipe, 3" DP & 4" Single Exhaust, LT1 Starter, Dual Pumps, ProPain/Alky/N2O Injection, TH400 w/3300 Stall, Transbrake & Trans-cooler w/Fan, 3" Chrome-moly DS, Metco Loop, 8.5" w/Welded Axle Tubes, Long Studs & 3.08s, 12" 1LE & LS1 Disc Brakes F/R, Tubular/Boxed UCAs/LCAs F&R, 36mm 1LE & 24mm Hellwig Sways, 6pt Rollbar, Chassis Braces, Bilstein/KYB F/R, 800lb/in & 200lb/in Springs F/R, Simmons FR17 17x9.5 w/275/40s & 17x11 w/315/35 NT05Rs & an HKS SSQV BOV... blah... blah... blah.

My current projects include adding alky injection (almost complete) and nitrous injection (Bob Bailey is working on a MAFT Pro trigger for me for this).

Lastly, here is an awesome HD video of the car on an auto-x course with the ECM stuck in "Valet Mode"... It was like having half of 150hp.
