Bumper Fillers
« on: December 08 2016, 07:34:52 PM »
Looking for opinions on bumper fillers.  I dont want to spend $600 on a set but dont want a cheap set I end up spending a huge amount of time on to make them work either.  Any input would be much appreciated.

I bought a pair of fiberglass ones off eBay years ago. I like em though I haven't had them painted yet . If I could swing the coin for the spoolfool rear I'd have one of those. But as of now I don't have rears. One of these days.

You can spend on the spoolfool fillers or you can get a cheap set and spend time fitting them.

I too would like to get Spoolfool, but most of my expense when into remodeling our kitchen.
So I decided to get both front and rear bumper fillers for $120.00.
The seller has them now for $120.00 or best offer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/152338708891?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I had to make minor holes adjustment, but overall not back fitting.
I'm in the process of sanding them down a bit; sanded the header panel, and now waiting for the summer to come since the garage is too cold to spray paint.

If you still have the original bumper fillers, you might want to reuse the support brackets that supported the original fillers to the car.
Example of pictures of what I used of the supported bumper fillers brackets.
I removed the brackets, fatten down the metal tabs, and cut off the flat sheet metal to act as a washer on the rear bumper fillers.

Time for rear fillers for the wife's 85 T.
I got a set of rears off Ebay for $150 shipped. They are made of ABS.
I think the finish is pretty good to paint as they are. Not many flaws in
the primer. I was afraid to go too low in price.
So far I had to trim around the license plate area to get it on.
I want to test fit before painting. I'll check back when I'm done.
ps, I don't see my pics in the preview of this post I hope they show up.

ABS is kinda scary.

You're basically taking a black VHS tape, making it concave, then pointing it at the sun.

There's no way that can work out well.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying ABS are drape molded?
I had heard fiberglass rattles. I heard the flexible fillers need adhesion
improver and are not guaranteed if they are not painted professionally .
I have them fitted and now I'm sanding and painting. I have to admit,
I don't think I'd  get these for my black car.
But I think they will be fine on a white car.

How do the fiberglass rattle? I've had f/g fronts for years. One of these days I was going to buy the rears. I offered a seller $65 for a set on eBay but he wouldn't sell em at that price. I'll have to keep saving.

I've heard a lot of complaints about the Danko stuff, interesting that you guys have found them OK.  I have a set of the LQK fronts for the white car I will try when it warms up.

I read on the other board about fiberglass rattling. I guess from being inside the bumper and either the bumper and or the fillers bouncing up and down. But if guys have them and they work fine great. Maybe I try them when I need fronts.
I finished up the rear today. I'm happy with the result but I don't think I'd buy these again.
I found the tail-light didn't fit because of the corner of the filler. I had to file some material off so the tail light would
go back in properly.  It seems the driver's side doesn't fit as well as the passenger side. I had more fitting to do on that side.
I also found that the passenger side hangs lower on the bumper because the lip is shorter. So I put some 1/4" rubber in there to make it similar as the driver side after I installed everything.
