If your over 50 the picture and sound doesn't  matter much. You cant see or hear most shit anyway. Look for
the most HDMI and USB slots.  Also base it on the service you have,
most don't provide 4k. Also only thing in 4k is Dumbo and some nature
shows. But back to what I said you cant see the difference anyway.
Netflix and Amazon downstreams 99% of all content in 720 or sometimes
1080. If they say 4K you get it at 720 unless you live in the big
city that has fiber to carry the signal.I had good luck with Sony, LG andSamsung And usually get good sales on them.

The “led” is for the backlighting. It’s led instead of a bulb. The letter in front of it is just a different way of doing it. O is organic, q is quantum - they are both different but the test is if you can tell the difference.
4k content is limited right now but like everything else that’ll improve. The quality of the scaling processor can make a huge difference on upscaling lower resolution content.
I’ve been looking - I don’t want anything smaller than a 65” to replace our 47”.
Start with the size tv you want, budget and then go look at some.

What's wrong with the Yammy and speakers you are using?  Or are you looking for better?  I have a curve tv and love it but it has a focal point so things may not look too clear out side of that focal point.  But the slight curve gives a 3D impression especially when the image is right at the curve.  My tv is 3D but I find it too busy.  The local provider has Vibe which is a 4k network for TV.

Nothing is wrong with the receiver or speakers. I was asking about the new TV's.

Jeremy...slow down. What's the scaling processor?
Title: Re: Home Theater Help Wanted
Post by: nocooler on September 29 2019, 06:06:50 PM
It takes SD, 720p, 1080p and upscales it to 4k. 4k is 4x the resolution of 1080p. If you've ever seen standard def content on a 1080p TV it can look block or pixelated.

I think it comes down to what you want to spend.  I didn't want to spend $5K on a TV so I went with the second from the top which has most of the features including 240 refresh, some say that is a waste.  And they say if you're over 50 get a 55" and if you're over 60 get a 65".  And who are they???

And the new TV's are now 8K!  If you like sitting right in front of the TV then you will notice the difference in 4K and 1080 but after a certain distance it doesn't change much.

I was at Whitby Audio on Friday. They had a Paradigm center channel speaker that was on consignment... and I grabbed it to upgrade my smaller center channel speaker. You should see the home theater they have set up in the basement. Unreal!

Picked up a pair of used Paradigm 7se's to upgrade my rear speakers this morning from a guy in Hastings that refurbs stereo equipment. He's as good as it gets. Gave him my Radio Shack Realistic belt drive turntable from the late 70's to refurb for me.

Check out a few sets and look at a 4K, it does up scale and will look a little better than the 1080.  It's like test driving a car you have to check them out in person.  Paradigm makes an excellent speaker for the dough!  I still have mine.  But I have my Kappa 9's for the front end and have Kappa 6's for the rear and still use the Paradigm sub.  It sounds amazing! :icon_kidra:

4K is a must, and almost all TV's are 4K anyway. Costco is good, since they double the MFG warranty (usually to two years), look at the remotes and see what you are comfortable with, avoid Samsung if you use/plan to use HDMI/ARC to feed a soundbar/home audio amplifier/etc.  I prefer GoogleTV for a smart OS, but there's few TVs with that - oh, and Sony sucks.

Samsung not have HDMI for home theater?
Title: Re: Home Theater Help Wanted
Post by: Steve Wood on September 30 2019, 10:08:05 AM
It has hdmi and ARC (audio return channel) but some have problems with the ARC working, then not working, then working again....I have a Samsung and hdmi works fine, but, I think I used an optical cable instead of an hdmi for the ARC cable which is an often suggested solution.  I don't remember if mine was flaky or why I did.  I think it was on the sound bar.  This ARC situation has been going on for some time as I recall.  I'm not sure why Samsung can have the problem but not others.  LG is a nice set but don't seem to have the good pricing around here.  I have not seen ratings on the latest Sony's but the last time I bought (two years ago)  I did not think they compared as well in picture quality.

It was no biggie and I love my Samsung.  My only suggestion is to buy the biggest screen you can mount on your wall or in front of it LOL...Makes for good watch of those hockey games when it's too cold to go out to the shop or ride your bike!  My last couple have been 65" and I think I may just can afford 75" or so the next time.

If you sit 8' from your tv, I don't think it matters whether you have 4k or 24K.  If you sit two feet from it, it may.  No matter what, the prices are dropping like mad and it's a good time to buy.

Researching it's prolly gonna be a Samsung 1080...buyi ng on Wednesday. Also looking at upgrading to 7.1 or 7.2 from my Yamaha 5.1...but damn...it's pricey.

Steve I had the same issues with ARC on both LG and Samsung and went back to optical. Bottom line is your TV's bells and whistles only work if they match the program source. Many channel still broadcast in 480p. That's VCR quality. You can upstream that all you want and it will still look like shit. Lucky here in the NY city region the cable providers are up to date with most service. But go 100 miles away and you will struggle to fine anything above 720 service.
Title: Re: Home Theater Help Wanted
Post by: Steve Wood on September 30 2019, 11:02:07 AM
Ed, I'm on Directv satellite.  720 is the best I get.  They have some programming in 4k but it costs more and I'm pretty sure it does not look any better.

I watch a lot of stuff on the Motortrend TV app that my son shared with me and I chromecast it to my tv.  Chromecast will not go any higher either.

I really think it is the wrong time to be buying a high end tv as the technology is still developing and prices are all over the place and nothing really stands out to me.  I don't give a damn about all the app ability, etc.  It just makes it a pain in the neck to use the tv .  I would rather put my money into good sound and use my phone to cast what I want to watch to the tv.  Not sure why I want good sound.  I need a set of hearing aids first but most of them seem to such as well.

I bought the cheap Element brand to replace the tube TV I had cuz I knew everything was gonna advance. It's one of those things you can't keep up with. The 1080's are now cheap so I'll move up. The top end stuff now will be cheap in a few years as everything advances...and I'll move up again. Same as my 5.1 receiver. When 9.2 really takes hold...then the 7.2 receivers will be cheap...and I'll move up then. I've been into surround sound since it came out, I started out with Quadraphase with a Marantz unit I had as a teenager and kept moving up. I went to Yamaha when Surround Sound came out...then went 5.1...and I'll move on to 7.1 when 9.2 becomes common place.

I can't see the high end stuff being that cheap.  After 2 years it was only $300 less for mine.  The high ends are going for $4k-7k right now.  There is a reason lots of people like the old hifi systems!  They make a lot of crap today!  Cheap cascade designs that are high in distortion and tolerances of plus or minus 5% or more which guarantee failure.

Maybe Canada does not mirror the US.  Two years ago, I bought a new Samsung 65" 4k smart tv, whatever that means.  BestBuy had it marked down for sale from $2700 to 1900.  Today, the equivalent is about $800.

Current Technology lasts  about a year down here in the tv business and then it nose dives in comparison to the newest and bestest....TVs have become disposable.

It would be a good deal if you can find a 4k version in your price range that you like...I don't really see it going obsolete any time soon.  The battle right now is over what kind of screen tech.  OLED, QLED, or some hybrid of the two.  As far as I am concerned, neither one is enough better than the regular 4k LED stuff that is a major price step below.
Title: Re: Home Theater Help Wanted

4K is way out of my price range. 1080 will be a huge improvement from what I have now.

Now I've gone and done it. The gent I got the 7se Paradigms just acquired a Yamaha 7.1 RX V1600. I can run 2 sets of front speakers...so I'll be snooping around for 2 more Paradigm tower speakers...and 2 Paradigm side speakers. Got it off him for 250 bucks. Nice upgrade for almost no money.

How is 4K out of your price range?

In Feb of '19 I bought this - https://amzn.to/2nloSrB - off eBay for $331US (with a 10% bonus bucks coupon from eBay, and a 5% ebates.com cash back, so it actually cost less about  $290US to my door).  And that was almost a year ago, so odds are you can get bigger for the same money, or the same for less money.

So 55", 4K, HDR, and a warranty.   Oh, and it's a ROKU TV so my borrowed Netflix, hulu, hbo go, and Amazon were waiting on me along with my Pornhub prescription.

There's a good chance going 1080i might be more expensive than 'settling' for 4K.

Got my hands full at the moment. Heading to pick up the receiver...and then off to Toronto to pick up a pair of Paradigm Legend V2's with powered subs. Using these for the rears...and the 7SE's are going on the wall for the side speakers. And then picking up a pair of Onstage wall mounts for the 7SE's from another gent. And then picking up a pair of Paradigm Monitor 7V3's to add to the front Paradigms I already have. This is gonna be a killer home theater. Lots of mint stuff for sale on Kijiji. Putting this together for peanuts. Gonna work on the TV last...and it's gonna be a big as I can fit on the wall. I have a standing gas fireplace...so I need some distance from it to the TV.

You forgot we have tariffs! :P   It goes down here too.  Brad said Top End.  I was more referring to HIFI, like a Mcintosh Amplifier worth $10K today isn't dropping in price the following years.  The really high end TV's are coming down in price but not like your average set.

Sounds like you need to ax the seller to list it as a commercial sample (like I do when I ship to Canadia).

The exchange rate is a killer if you buy from the US.    I few days ago I bought a $99CDN item and it actually cost me $75US.

....AND my example was from 8 months ago, that's a major timeframe in TV's pricing.
Title: Re: Home Theater Help Wanted

Yeah it can be brutal, Earl!  General rule is what it sells for in US funds you add 50% for exchange and shipping to get the Canadian value. :(

I still haven't figured how what the hell NAFTA did when there's always been duties getting into Canadia.

I'm guessing you guys can't buy foreign goods direct from Japan and/or China because the US is basically the Wal*Mart store?    And all the available selection is mainly US sellers, even on Asian items?

Earl, I don't know how it works...but all I can tell you is everything up here is stupidly expensive. I'm nickel and diming the speakers and receiver...cuz if I were to buy new it'd be in the 5 to 7 grand range without breaking a sweat. I'll have about 1500 into speakers and receiver when all is said and done. I have a friend prolly upgrading his big screen...so I may grab his. It's a Samsung...thin k it's a 55...gotta talk to him about it...not sure what it is as far as HD etc. Electronic equipment doesn't hold its value. You can get good quality stuff for about 1/4 of what it was worth new.

Oh yeah, Right after I bought my TV I saw a friend at the gas station with his 'old' HD 55" in the back of his truck. I could have got it for free.  He just wanted to move up to a 65" so he replaced his perfectly fine TV.

No - it has HDMI, but if you are connecting a  soundbar to your TV via the HDMI ARC (Audio  Return CHannel), it may turn the TV on at random. Long time software issue that Samsung seems to not want to fix. If I leave my Sony soundbar plugged in, the TV will just turn itself on at random.

My daughter lives out in the woods in a cabin...so she does most of her shopping on the internet and has it shipped here...and then drops by every Friday to pick it up. It appears stuff she buys from China gets damn near shipped for free. How in the blue hell does that work?

The US government supplements/finances postage from China.

It's amazing that I can buy something off eBay from China for less than I can mail an empty envelope to my neighbor.

They can gather raw materials, manufacture a product, warehouse it, pay someone to list it, pay someone to mail it, pay postage, pay eBay 10%, pay paypal 3%+$0.29, and get it to my door turning a profit on something that sold for $1.

A few years ago I bought a bluetooth USB dongle from China for $0.11US.

Yet several years ago I was working with a foundry in china to cast 'earlbrown timing covers' and for me to have a sample mailed to me without gobment subsidies, was going to run me $79.

Each country assumed the cost of delivery within their own country, It was supposed to be balanced , not 99% from Asia and 1% back. So yes= subsidized.

The splitter some how rips the HDCP out so the Blu ray player, TV and receiver all get along and stop fighting with each other. As soon as I plug the out to the TV the receiver throws the error. I think it's the TV throwing a fit. I'll try the splitter between the TV and receiver first.

I'm in good with the audio/visual tech that works for a couple of different audio/visual shops. So far the splitter has stopped the error code on the receiver. The 5.1 Yamaha I had was a breeze to set up. Almost like Eric designed it. This 7.1...is a nitemare. TV is telling me no signal. It would help if I could figure out where I could choose a HDMI port. Nothing on the remote...and I can't figure out how to get the onscreen menu up. I found the PDF from Yamaha for the manual. Gonna start going over it. Someone on YouTube should have a tutorial for it as well. Also need to find a HDMI to VGA adapter...so I can hook up a Samsung 32 inch to a desktop computer I have that doesn't have HDMI. Need the male end for the VGA end. Not sure if such an animal exists. Prolly won't be working this week again. Better go get some beer...cuz this is gonna test my patience. I'd rather change the rear spark plug on the PS on a hundred TR's than deal with this.

Found the offending speaker wire that was grounding out. Rear and front satellite speakers aren't working...and HDMI isn't working for the Blu Ray player. Using and older DVD player with the RCA connectors. HDMI keeps saying input not found. Nothing on the remote gives me an option for HDMI 1 or 2. Still can't figure out how to get the onscreen menu to come up for the receiver. Got some reading to do. Nothing on YouTube for help.

I'm ONLY watching DVD's on this setup. To rip the HDCP from the signal I'm using a splitter. Should I put the splitter between the Bluray player and receiver...or between the receiver and TV. The receiver is causing the HDCP error.

Tried both in ports on the back of the TV...and they both say no signal. More reading on this receiver. All I had to do was pick HDMI 1 ,2,3 or 4 from my 5.1 and that was it. Nothing so simple on this one. I need a beer...

Splitter only stops the error if I place it between the receiver and TV...that's that question answered.

Okay...so the deal is HDMI won't work cuz the TV and Blu Ray player aren't compatible. Cuz HDMI won't work, then the on screen won't work. Hooking up the component vid brings up the onscreen menu. Rear speakers and front satellite speakers aren't working...but I'll get to that tomorrow.

Slowly winning. Just gotta figure out why the rear speakers aren't working. About a million reasons in the manual why. I'll have to go through each one till I hit it. Whoever designed this should be shot.

All speakers are working. Sounds good. I recommend 7.1 for the other 2 surround speakers. There's a bunch of other adjustments for fine tuning that I'm gonna work on over the next few days. Thanks for everyones input.

My budget 2.1 setup sounds decent, I’m sure a receiver would help as the Dayton b652 bookshelf’s are driven by a topping 25wx2 setup. The Polk 10” is powered and it slams pretty good. When I really want to jam the I go for the headphones.

I have a pair of old 12" SHIVAs in a sealed box ( from a bass list group buy). So far I haven't needed the bridged Haflers to drive them, the Technics (2.1 only )has proved adequate.
And my homemade TL's with their liquid smooth peerless cloth dome.
Suppose I need to get a center channel as I hate they way the engineers mix the channels now-a-days.

That's why there is youtube. You make vids for the uninformed turbo Buick anthusiast. Some one has surely put together a vids on how Yamahas handshake.

Is there a way to test to see if the red thing(or what ever sends the handshake) is sending the signal out? Do you have a way to simulate the signal to  see if the receiving means is seeing something?
This is why people have multiple of whatever the hobby is. Trouble shooting with known working pieces is way easier than swinging in the dark.
