settle a argument.

i'm talking bang for buck on typical stock drive train car with just minor bolt-ons.  running pump gas on the street.  

a ta-49 new, can be pretty expensive depending on who you buy from.  but a smart buyer can usually grab one that needs to be redone for $200-$300, and have it gone through for around $200, depending if wheels need to be replaced, of course.

for a direct bolt on, you can't come anywhere near beating that for price, correct?
is there anything else out there that can compare?

altho, I prefer the TE44, basically, you are right...as long as one is running higher boost....which takes alky or race gas=of course that takes larger injectors, so like anything, it is never quite that simple :)

What about the billet version of that? Besides it's price I'm sure it's pretty wicked.
87 Turbo T - 4.1 484 block bored .030 over, Champion ported irons with ported intake, RJC power plate, Elgin 214/224 cam, 6776 turbo with RJC boost controller, stretched SLIC, 3\" THDP, Pypes dual exhaust, 4\" MAF pipe with 14\" K&N and Z06 MAF, 60# Mototrons, hot wired Walbro 340 with KB-BAP, Translator Gen 2 and Extender Extreme chip, Mike Kurtz built 200-4r, PPC 3200 stall, UMI upper and lower control arms, passenger side airbag, any hydroboosted.

20# Boost at 20* timing on 93 octane. No track times yet.

Alky install in progress.

What practical advantage would a billet turbo have? I cant see a need aside from looks.

They spool faster and along with them Precision started porting the shrouds to reduce the flutter that shortens turbo life.

for the cost, there is not much benefit to the average street car.  As he said, they spool a bit quicker.

Altho we don't port the shrouds as frequently as the ricers, that is a benefit that is very nice on the larger turbos, or even some of the smaller ones that have larger intercoolers and at bad problem with compressor surge.

When trying to accelerate at light throttle and the compressor starts stalling because it is in the surge zone, it can feel like a wet dog shaking with some combos

what was your reason for preference on the te44 steve? I think I saw you talk about that before, but can't remember

I thought the 44 and the 49 were basically the same but the 49 had a removable inlet bell and the 44 didn't ?

The t49 or 44 will get you 11's without much effort even if you still have old tech shit on your car. You just have to know how to pick whats good and what will make the vendors eat bigger steaks :D

The TA49 is a stock appearing unit that bolts straight on and uses the stock actuator without any mods.

The TE series has a slightly larger compressor housing/wheel than the TA so it can make a hair more power if everything is right.  The larger housing means the actuator bracket holes don't quite line up so you have to use only one bolt to hold it on, modify the bracket a bit, or use an adapter bracket to mate the original to the housing.

As I said above, I don't see the cost of a billet for a street car, but, then I am being practical because I don't hang out at the WAWA and talk shit.  :D
