Speedtalk was discussing how to build a gutsy street motor that isn't LS. I thought this summed it up nicely:

All the older iron is getting hard to find. Anything good has been used up, scrapped, hoarded, or needs serious attention.
The LS is an amazing piece, it's readily available, and fits may peoples budget. 
It's nice to have options.
I get it, it gets old seeing the same damn LS under the hood of everything but, it just works. 
Show me a stock bottom end small block ford/chevy/dodge that makes 450rwhp with factory casting heads, is pump gas friendly, and lives for more than a season at a time. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's going to need a lot more work to get there. 
You know which one I'd pick :)

What he said. The young fellows don't have much of a choice. The wrecking yards are littered with ls and little else for v8. They make mad power and are easy to swap with all the mounts out there now . The hptuners can do the stock computer and if you have bigger budget there are plenty of stand alone stuff and the niftier stuff does the trans too.

That damn inline, offset mopar 6 will run with the right hands on it...Back in the sixties, it took down a lot of 383 and bigger....I wouldn't mind having one

In 1965 when I took my car to the track most week ends, there were two cars that dominated the stock classes.   One was a slant six Dart and the other was a '58 Pontiac with mechanical fuel injection.  Both of them were a second faster than anything in their classes and they both  would win their classes and go a long way toward winning it all every week.
