When I was talking to CHarlief1 yesterday, he mentioned some really inexpensive mini starters on eBay.
How many teeth do the stock TR flywheels have?
Did you mean something like this Charlie?

Says it's for 153 tooth flywheels
This says it works with both??

The first one's ok and the second one is the one I've been using Mark. It'll work fine and it will also work on small and big block buicks as well. If I remember right the V6 and V8 all have the same tooth count. 162 if I remember right.
Forgot to add that the first is a PMG starter and the second one is a gear reduction type so it usually spins faster.

I run an LT1 starter in my GN. Heard horror stories about the $99.00 mini starters.

The same ones that were sold on tbs.com?

Yep.

I got mine from TBS.com years ago and it has worked great.

long as the engine does not backfire when cranking, they were okay.

I can't tell if you're being serious or joking...lol.

I got my starter from the local co. in Lanc. that I trust all my starter and alternator work for my customers. One of the 1st things I updated. I would class it as a mini. One of the few things I don'y worry about.

I can honestly tell you that one of our members up here bought one...cranked the engine once...and cracked the housing.
-
Holy crap. What the hell would cause that!?! I have a tbs.com mini starter...

piece of plastic in the drive breaks when it backfires...ch eap is as cheap does.

I think Just a Six had the whole casting disintegrate.

Yup! Blew out a freeze plug & the housing is now in 5 peices. It worked well for 5 years. Motor is still good but the housings crumble pretty easily. I have another brand new one but have been using the LT1 in my car now.

Are you talking about the gear reduction types Steve? The ones we've been getting have had engines back fire badly and never had an issue with them.

Thats where mine came from.
My friend had his motor die but the housing is fine so one day I'll build one with the good parts from each one. I think I have too many starters now! ;)

Interesting. I just counted the teeth on my original flexplate and there's 160.

Thanks Dave. I wasn't sure like I said.

Just remember, there is no voltage on a ground wire! That is what he said....I went out and saved a bunch of weight by removing all the ground wires in my cars after being informed of that factoid.

I suppose the fuel return line is next to go? :O
-
I plugged that when I threw that round emissions can away. That emissions stuff slows you way down. Got it right after the air pump

Too late...I have one of those too.

Is this the one Charlie? Seems, wrong haha. I used the part number from the first post and it came up with this one. TIA
