General Buick Tech / Re: GN1's with TA Performance replacement headers
« on: November 16 2013, 09:32:52 AM »
Not a problem with irons. The spark plug position is different between iron and aluminum and between TA aluminum and Champ aluminum. I have Champ aluminums. The TA' headers seal up well and will take a car into the 10's.

General Buick Tech / Re: Fuel Pressure
« on: November 13 2013, 06:37:11 PM »
43-44 psi is where most (I think all) chips see static fuel pressure (idle rpm vacuum bias) around 700 rpm. 46 psi is static fuel pressure adjustment error (+2 psi) maybe. Your short term integrator should be driving learns closer to 128. With the static fuel pressure set to 44, pull the vacuum line off the regulator and your fuel pressure should be 38-39 psi. I wonder if you have a tear in the regulator diaphram or the spring is snagged/stuck. I wonder if a messed up return line could cause this?? 52 psi with the line off is not correct. The old KENNE BELL regulators seemed to work well and are meant to be rebuilt as necessary. If I sound like a nut case it's cause I am. Long day at work.

General Buick Tech / GN1's with TA Performance replacement headers
« on: November 12 2013, 10:00:59 PM »
If you have GN1's and are planning to get TA Performance replacement headers you must grind a clearance into the flange over cylinders 2 & 4. It's agravating to pay over $700 for parts which need to be cleaned up (grinding flange over weld from out of the #2 runner) and now having to grind spark plug clearances into the header flange. I also purchased a new TA front cover and the big tab on the passenger side cracked. I had it welded by an expensive "compitent" welder. It's rediculous when the vendor could not put a very minor operation into the tool cut path so that you would have indigestion if you purchased Champ heads instead of TA's. TA knows all about these small issues because they told me that they did. To summarize, I spent over $1400 plus my time and additional fees to know that when I'm done with these parts they will be correct.

Dave spark can be the kiss of death because we don't always hear it neither does the old OE esc system. If the knock sensor is improperly torqued etc the knock may not register. State of the art esc systems use 2 paths to hear knock and separate noise. I would be creeping up on a tune very slowly. Fuels vary a lot, both pump and race gas. I have gone out and tested fuels (by specific gravity) and was amazed at the difference on the pump sticker vs the fuel specific gravity. Torque is a function of chamber pressure. Turn up the boost slowly if you have no knock. For example a pump gas calibration might be 23 deg (1 & 2) 21 WOT. Big turbo on pump gas might be 21 (1 & 2) 18 WOT. Just be cautious.

Joel I assume that your listed walbro will not be able to static a set of 60's @ around 69 psi fuel pressure (44 static + 25 psi boost) . If you email Racetronixs and ask for their fuel curve (volume @ pressure and voltage) they'll probably send you an attachment. There is a lot of pressure loss across the stock fuel lines which is not comprehended in a lot of published curves.

General Buick Tech / Re: Time For A FMIC?
« on: November 06 2013, 04:54:27 PM »
Some SLIC scoops are terrible for presenting air to the core. The stock scoop works well for the application and Meese had a scoop with a baffle that worked well on his intercooler and a half combinations. I have a PTE SLIC and the backpressure across the core is 1.5 psi but the scoop as received from Precision looks to be terrible for using the majority of the heat exchange surface. The scoop can be be reworked for improved air flow over the core. The air also has to get out of the core as well. Red Armstrong's TSE car that runs 9's with a slic uses that flapper door which Red had me under his car looking at. I'm not saying you should/should not go front mount but you do have options.

Joel I'm nearly finished a pump gas motor with a few little twists. The secret to a pump gas engine is reducing heat, burn efficient and be cautious with spark. A pump gas engine that hauls is a little more interesting to do with the original LC2 cylinder heads. If your combo is listed correctly it appears like you are short on fuel pump volume.

Your TE60 is not near its efficiency island. The compressor wheel is 60-1 (great compressor wheel) is in its "zone" probably starting about 21 psi. The stock intercooler with a stock neck has about 3.5 psi back pressure. If you dial in 17 psi (which is what you see at the intake plenum) your turbo has to produce 20.5 psi. That extra pressure generated by your compressor wheel (3.5 psi) is air rub (friction) making heat so your charge air temperature rises. What Steve said is correct....... Steve the Hemco arrived today. Thanks so much. There is a lot to be learned.

My clunker was in Musclecar Review at the BPG "tea party" a couple of years ago. They took pictures, asked me some questions and took off. When the article came out the info was wrong. I prefer a decent board (like this) where people are interested in learning and growing their skills and making their car what they would like it to be.

Thanks for the data point regarding your friends car.I had doors cut into my stock headers to eliminate the winking at the runner to log welds and did a lot of port matching etc. I'm just glad to hear some favorable mph's out of the new headers.

I purchased a set from TA and they fit well (an exact match for the exhaust ports on my ported GN1's) but I wonder if they will create more back pressure than my stockers did. I'm just trying to get my combination into the mid to high tens (on race gas) without fighting it all the way.
Thanks for your comments

Steve just a couple of observations. It looks possible that folks could have been using a Hemco with a lower intake egr chimney whether functional or not. This may cause poor air flow to the front cylinders ,uneven egr distribution or both where egr was not disabled mechanically and in the software. If things can look ok on pump gas (depending on consistent octane) things may look better on race gas.
