Just re-gear it and get some good axles. If you get a used axle, you'll rebuild it anyways. The 7.5 in my El Camino has survived through 17 years of neglect and 5 of pure abuse.

Never dynoed or raced legally.

It was a 383 with an Edelbrock Torker and a Holley at first and then it was a GMPP manifold with a Q-Jet on top. All the standard SBC things were there, headers, rockers, etc, etc... The tranny was an Art Carr TH400 that kicked like a mule. It was daily driven too.

A well built 7.5 will take more abuse than most people
will give them credit for. Here are a few examples:
A guy I know had a mid '80s Firebird with a 468 BBC
that would pull wheelies on 7.5 that he also built. A friend
of mine has a 7.5 in his El Camino with a built 454 BBC that
hes driven for 2 years. Another friend has an '84 Camaro
that has run a best of 11.80 with a 355 SBC. It now has a
383 SBC that we built at the machine shop where I work
part time that pushes an estimated 700 hp on N2O. And,
it still has the 7.5 in it !

You may be able to find a 3.42 limited slip 7.5 axle from a Monte SS
or Olds 442.  FYI TA makes a girdle for those also. I'd also
recommend the "C" clip elimators. You don't really know the value
of them until you've lost an axle.

442 axle is a 3:73 I believe. Further proof is what I see on lifted trucks these days, new Chevy's with 33 inch tires and a 10 bolt rear end, looks like a 7.5" too. The onlt thing that will break it is a lack of common sense as far as maintenance and fucking around go. C-clip eliminators are good too!

how much is all the parts to build it along with a gear set? i have an option of buying a used one from somone on turbobuicks. anyone know Trbuick on turbobuicks.co m? he is located in michigan, said the he only wants 550 plus shipping. i asked him for some info on what it came out of and the milage. any clues what to look for?

I never heard of him. When I was building my Grand Prix.
I priced some axles for it. At the time they wanted $700 for
a 3.42 limited slip axle condition unknown no warranty! I don't
know how they can honestly ask that much for something that they
don't know anything about nor stand behind. I ended up buying
an Auburn limited slip diff, a set of Richmond gears, the installation
kit, the seals, axle bearings, a couple of crush collars, fluids, and a
pinion depth setting tool. All for $680 ! So I ended up with a
brand new rear end, that I know will hold up, and I've set up
a few since then that covered the cost of the tools required.
So it didn't cost me all that much.

Yeah, fuck the TBs axle, you'll spend more on shipping than the actual part, and it's still used, you know.

Yeah if you're going to buy a used axle,
buy it local to you so you can at least save the shipping.
