Title: I miss all of you guys over here!
Post by: phil_long on November 09 2017, 12:07:02 PM
What up gentlemen!! Long time no speak. I'm dropping by to say what's up and update you on a few things going on with the TR. Lots of changes since I last posted.  Getting the lifters done now, as well as valve cover gaskets and every other gasket involved in that area. Also, replacing those stupid little plastic pieces that seats the rockers to the rocker arm(they're stupid because they keep breaking when I try and tap them in). Looking at the intake, the EGR passage was completely clogged up, and I'm thinking this could have potentially had something to do with my 02's not being able to stay up in 3rd gear? Also, my stock turbo is shot to shit. It has a TON of shaft play up and down, so I'm on the market for a turbo and a downpipe that I plan to purchase within the next month or so. I'm also replacing the transmission shifter cable and the the handle since the stock one turned to clay years ago. I'm excited about what is to come. Hope all is well with you all and I will post when the car is back on the road. I forgot to mention, I posted about a break issue I was having a while back, and I'm finally buying the damn one way valve and fixing it. Every time I tap the accelerator right now the break gets hard as shit. Lol

The thing I plan to check on next is why I continue to smell fuel under moderate/full throttle. I dont have any visible leaks anywhere, and the car is running super rich in first still. I removed all of the fuel out of first gear, and added all fuel to all other gears due to a lean 3rd gear condition. I forgot to tell you all I'm also installing my RJC powerplate while the intake is off as well.

well, Phil, all you gotta do is drop in and say hi to your friends!

Think I would check for an exhaust leak under the car

Yeah that is definitely a good point Steve. Lol. Life is trying to do a number on me...just can't figure out which number that is. Exhaust leak can cause lean o2's? Can definitely check.

Charles been a busy guy lately with all types of "family" stuff going. New baby, new house, and new wife. We were discussing getting his car up here and working on it, but at this point who knows. I know I'm getting my car together. Hopefully it gives him the bug?

Yeah I read a lot of great reviews on it, plus it gives me a shit ton of room to grow. Trying to figure out converter now. Thinking of a l/u since I'm not much of a track guy. Maybe a 3k stall? Idk. Any input is appreciated really.

Phil, LU convertors when unlocked...sli p like a whore. The 6262 will 'drive through' a LU convertor like no ones business. The 9/11 and Precision multidisc are the only 2 that can be locked at WOT when you wanna hit the track. Spend your money once. Call PTC and ask for Dusty Bradford. Have Dusty spec a 9.5 inch race convertor. Chris at CK Performance sells the NL kit...and it can be installed at any transmission shop. I run the AC 16930 behind my 6262...but I don't recommend it as it's 'tight' and takes some tuning to get it to launch.

The 6262 is a mid to low 10 second capable turbo with correct mods and tuning. You're transmission will have to be up to the task.

A NL convertor will rev slightly higher on the highway and you'll lose about 1-2 mpg.

Build, ET/MPH is in my sig.

Your turbo like the heads or does it matter.

HP is in the heads...but you need a convertor that couples efficiently to get it to the back tires.

Everyone will have an opinion on the converter, but here's my 2 cents fwiw

I firmly believe it's worth the coin to pony up for a quality piece. I've had a few over the years, and the difference is night and day. Again, just my opinion. Weather it's a AC, PTC, or a Husek, it has to be for YOUR particular combo. I happen to run a Husek, which I'm quite happy with so far. My combo is stock long block with bolt on mods. It's a LU and fits my needs. I've managed to dig a 1.58 60' out of it and with mph around 117. Nothing earth shattering but not too bad so far on an old school TE60, and I'm sure there's some left in it. I know that's nothing earth shattering, and some much more savvy guys have gone a lot quicker off the stock D5!
I'm not a full time track guy as I do drive car a lot on the street, so I decided to retain the LU. But like Brad said, maybe if I had ported heads and a roller cam and so on, I may just blow through it. It's not a mulitdisk , so I DO NOT lock it and will not. I just T&T, so really no point and I'll just burn up the single disk anyway.

Guess my point is, tailor the converter to your combo and goals but don't scrimp on the cost.

That's all excellent advice gentlemen! I've been texting back and forth with Aaron(Royal T limited) and he's running the Revolution X(l/u) TC from Fullthrottle. In complete(I mean complete complete) street trim he just ran 11.49 at 120 with that setup. I'm buying a TC brand new regardless of where I get it from. My lockup switch has been out for some time and I need to get it fixed. I enjoy the l/u feature a lot. We'll see and I definitely plan to keep you all involved. Thanks again for all of your opinions as I value them all.

Phil, contact forcefed3.8's on the other board. I found a thread and it appears he tested the FT convertor with good results. Rob doesn't sell convertors...s o he'll give you an unbiased opinion. Thread is in the link. It turned into a pissing match...unfort unately. I was interested in who builds FT's convertors...b ut with the mud slinging, I don't know if that came out...or not.

I couldnt imagine the response man. I stay quiet and listen to only a few for the most part. I enjoy the guys who have a mind of their own and steer away from the majority though. Like them, I don't have a ton of money to spend on certain parts when you can get one for much less and still get ideal results.

Phil I purchased this 6262 from Precision when it was first introduced when Patrick Rubio was on his 2nd go around there. it has about 1300 passes on it with the journal bearing configuration. If anything, it's durable. I change the oil/filter every other race weekend.

There was something in that thread about a convertor company being about 10 miles from FT. Not sure if they named it.

If Life is not providing you with ups and downs, you are most likely dead, Charles!  We just have to make the best of what it offers us, and it usually works out.  My advice is to not spend a lot of time trying to figure out why life does what it does to us...just kick ass and don't worry about taking names.

I remember posting something here a while back about my brake pedal pushing back against me under acceleration. After years of dealing with this(lazy), I finally did what you all had suggested, which was buy a one way valve. I actually found a direct replacement valve for the brake booster, and now the brakes are working great again. Just finding shit to do until this turbo gets here.

check the check valves in the vacuum lines on the drivers side...bet some of them are blown by now

Post by: good2win22 on November 21 2017, 01:54:52 PM
The check valve from a 94 camaro works best. It sits below the valve over and has a special silicone check valve that tends to hold up to boost a lot better

Port the wastegate hole. I don't wanna fly down there and change the headgaskets.

This is what I purchased for my brake booster and it works great. Are there other check valves I should look for outside of the brakes?

And lastly, why does the wastegate hole need to be ported? The actuator it came with won't seal properly?

It'll seal...but there's some physics involved with the pressure on the puck. I'll let the others chime in that are more knowledgeable. I have mine out to about .900...but if you go to far the boost won't come up high enuf. It's not an exact science. I'm also using a biggie puck from RJC to keep the boost under control.
Title: Re: I miss all of you guys over here!
Post by: phil_long on November 22 2017, 11:56:27 AM
I'm using the rjc boost controller for controlling of the boost. I'm definitely curious to see what else is to be said about this. I'm assuming boost creep would be an issue if the wastegate hole is too small right? I have the boost turned down a lot right now, so I'll test it out to what it does out of the box
Title: Re: I miss all of you guys over here!
Post by: Scoobum on November 22 2017, 12:07:13 PM
I have an RJC boost controller still sitting here in the package. I adjust the rod for the amount of boost I want. Yeah, I know...my car's boring.

One of the locals went to a 67 turbo a few years back. He didn't port the wastegate hole...leaned into it...and went home and changed the headgaskets. He'll prolly see this and wonder how I know...lol!
Title: Re: I miss all of you guys over here!
Post by: phil_long on November 22 2017, 12:33:16 PM
Lmao!!! Damn that's messed up man! Hopefully I have better luck. I'll keep a close eye on boost. The rjc boost controller works wonders compared to the stock setup. Builds boost so damn fast it should be illegal. I love it. Probably helps with understalled cars for too big of turbos as well.

The wastegate works by passing exhaust flow mass around the turbine wheel.  If it can't bypass enough it can't lower the boost.  At the same time exhaust back pressure is acting on the wastegate puck trying to force it open.  If it's too open the wastegate will crack open early and bleed off boost.

Hey, just canceled my order at Fullthrottle. Found a package deal from a board member who recently sold his car, and bought the exact same turbo that I just purchased and never had a chance to install. It's still new in box, with a ptc 3000 l/u new in box for a price I couldn't pass up on. Ask me how much for both these brand new items? Must be an early birthday present...

Convertor is still available...wh y didn't you take it? Let me guess. It was an off the shelf restalled 2800 or 3200.

My bad...read the post wrong.

Not sure if I should start a new thread or not? :chin:

Anyway, the turbo and converter is installed in the car. Amazing the difference that was made as far as regular driving. My car feels like an entirely new car. I haven't had to touch anything(as far as porting the WG hole). The boost is exactly where I left it. I really wasn't expecting this turbo to kick in like it does with such low boost(only 11 lbs right now). I recall telling you all before that I couldn't get my TC to lockup and it's just stop locking on it's own one day. I'm glad that I didn't waste time trying to chase down the issue, because it's magically working again with this new converter install.

I also believe I found the reason I could never get my 02's up in third gear....should I start another thread?

The old convertor may not have been locking...as you may have fried the clutch in it. Been there...done that. Don't lock this new convertor at WOT...or you'll smoke the clutch.
Title: Re: I miss all of you guys over here!
Post by: phil_long on December 15 2017, 04:50:12 PM
Not sure how I could have fried it. I don't have a way to Lock the converter at WOT and I never did any break boosting.  :icon_neutral:  The car is pretty fun to drive now though. I'm slightly annoyed because I can't get my TPS sensor adjusted to where it should be. Only way I can get my WOT settings to where it should be is if I increase my idle voltage above where it should be. Shit is super annoying, and I think I'm going to search for another one? I did read on Vortex Buick about checking the slack in the accelerator cable, so I might look at that first. I don't feel any play in the pedal though.

Go to Steves site. Adjust your TPS and IAC as he describes. IAC should be 10-20 warmed up in Park. I adjust my TPS to 42. Also adjust your TV cable as per his instructions.
