General Buick Tech / Re: Test N Tune friday night
« on: September 14 2013, 03:07:04 PM »
Thanks Steve, appreciate your help. I have a fuel gauge rigged up to a hose, I will check fuel psi under boost. Car has ATR stainless headers I believe. I don't see or hear any exh leaks. Has 3" downpipe with ATR external wastegate that I plumped psi regulator into. The TT paperwork says o2 on 100 octane can run a bit leaner 750-800. I was trying to get it around 750-760. I will try to tighten rear brakes up some more, would like to see my 60' a little quicker. The Hoosiers at 22lb cold pressure dead hooked leaving around 4-5 psi. I see my next purchase needs to be Powerlogger.  We have 2 more TnTs in October before they stop for the year. Will do my homework and see if I can improve my times and run safer. 22lbs boost seems like my max on 100 octane.

General Buick Tech / Test N Tune friday night
« on: September 14 2013, 01:53:00 PM »
Got my car hooking well this time out. Solid rear lower control arms and Hellwig bar on stiffest setting, new Hoosier DOT drag radials. Fresh valve springs last week. I have Scanmaster but no Powerlogger (I now see the need for this doing the fine tuning). Car has TT 5.7 race chip on 100 octane. Always showed rich on street so I pulled 2.3% fuel overall from default setting before I hit track.
first pass at 22lb boost, launch with maybe 1lb boost (first pass jitters) 60'=2.03 1/8mph 83.5  1/4= 13.15 @ 102.7  bit lean O2 739 and 1.2kr
2nd pass set fuel from 125 to127 overall, launch 4lb boost 60'=1.83 1/8mph 84.2 1/4= 12.80 @ 103.1 (forgot to get readings was jacked about hitting 12s and listening to guy in brand new CTS-V that I spanked
3rd pass 24lb boost, 60'=1.87 1/8mph 84.6 1/4= 12.82 @ 103.8  real lean O2 687 and 3kr. (I have an air psi reg for boost control so hard to set)
4th pass 24lb boost, added fuel to 132 overall. 60'=1.86 1/8mph 84.2  1/4= 12.85 @ 103.4  O2 at 760 and 1.5kr
So car seems to run same on 22lb verses 24lb boost. My 60' could be better but I cant build more than 4-5lb boost on brakes before rpms hit 3k and tires turn. Should I pull 1st gear only fuel to build more boost on line? My MPH seems low, I just did comp 980 springs, car pulls to 5k rpm good now, used to fall on its face about 4600. Would the Vegas elevation 2200ft affect power that much? Temps were 85 and 20% humidity. Any advice from the gurus appreciated on dialing in. Powerlogger has to wait a while, funds low. I am happy with cars improvement so far.

Im not a turbo Buick expert but I am a heavy truck mechanic for a living. Just because a part is new or low miles doesn't mean anything. I have seen many parts come out of the box defective or bad. What is the reputation of the engine builder? Pull off the valve covers and have a look in there. Turn the engine over by hand and watch the rockers. You could remove a set of valve springs and have them tested. A new set only costs $45 shipped to your door. Listen to Steve and the other guys on this website. I have learned tons of info and fixed many issues on my GN with their help. You will figure it out.

Installing valve springs this weekend. So just ditch the stock valve spring cups? Getting ready to run car Sept 13.

General Buick Tech / Re: Hoosier DOT drag radials

Scoobum, please let me know what air pressure works good for your car if you run them at track soon. I have to wait 2 weeks until next test n tune here. I had them at 26 this morning and after a small burnout they spun about 10 feet then hooked leaving at 5lb boost on the brakes. At a 2-3lb boost launch they dead hooked on street. Thinking of starting at 22 psi air at track and work my way down if needed. My car only builds 5-6lb boost on brake at 3000rpm but it kills my Nittos that I run as street tires.

General Buick Tech / Hoosier DOT drag radials
« on: August 31 2013, 03:23:21 PM »
Heres a pic of my new 275/60/15 Hoosier DOT drag radials mounted on 15x8s. Trying to go to track in 2 weeks since I got rained out Friday. went out this morning to play a little, had air psi at 26 and they hooked tons better than my Nittos at 20. They are SOFT and sticky.

General Buick Tech / Re: MT 275/60/15 will they fit
« on: August 30 2013, 11:11:33 PM »

"Could be an issue when I try these Hoosier 28 inch DR`s. Got them mounted on GN rims...but these things look huge. Got them for 200 bucks new...so what the hell. Gonna check Hoosiers website to check the difference between the MT 28 inch DR and these. Sidewall is godawful thin and they`re very sticky. Wouldn`t trust these on the street."

I just mounted a set of the 275/60/15 Hoosier Drag radials on 15x8 aluminum wheels with 3.75 backspace I believe and installed on car last night. Side by side with my Nitto DR they look about the same size. They fit well but my rear fender lip is about 2 inches above tire. If my car was lowered a bit in the rear they would probably rub edge of fender since mine are not rolled. Of course it rained all day today cancelling the test n tune since I got my tires yesterday. Im gonna try to get out in morning and try them out!
Sorry I goofed up when pasting quote from Scoobum.

General Buick Tech / Re: wheel hop...update
« on: July 31 2013, 08:17:44 PM »
So your swaybar is on the stiffest setting now and eliminated the hop? I bought the Hellwig bar per yours and Steves advice from my older post. I also got some solid lower control arms and new cheap shocks. I test launched my car and got a little wheelhop once out of 5 times. I know the bar helps because I dont burn tires in second gear anymore. Not trying to hijack your post, just wonder if stiffest setting is best for traction before I adjust bar again.

Its 58mm. Same size as The turbo on my car but the exh side on Garrett looks smaller.

Thanks for looking. I wasnt sure if it was a common aftermarket turbo. It came with my car and I was thinking of trying to get a few bucks for it. The comp wheel is dinged up and has in/out play but could be repaired. Im always trying to scratch up some GN money! Came in the trunk along with the stock turbo and stock exh headers. I will have to try and get some measurements from it.

For Sale/Trade/Want To Buy / Re: wtb a/c lines
« on: July 15 2013, 08:50:02 PM »
My a/c lines leak at the crimps. Found out by leaning on them. It would be nice if the Highway Stars lines were available now while its hot. My motivation to spend money on them will be way down once it cools off!

I did go at it wrong when I went to track. I was rushing to get out there since it was last TnT until end of August. It was WAY to hot that night (well over 100 at 9pm). I slapped my new PTC converter in car Thursday and straight to track Friday night with no drive time. Actually only put a few miles on car since I got it in April since Ive been doing work to it. When I made passes I should have made notes of my Scanmaster data after each pass, but only checked for knock after each pass. Im guessing engine has the original valve springs. My tire spin was bad through first and started up again in second gear. I actually had to pedal car through 60ft. So I believe its a combo of the heat, tire spin and my tune. Im still learning the ropes of tuning this car. Thanks for the support from you guys and next trip to the track in the fall will be better all the way around!

ordered the Hellwig bar from Amazon for $201 shipped. Best price I could find online. Will check my bushings and probably box my lower control arms. After that I will figure out my tire psi and hopefully hook up in the fall when the heat breaks. Going to try to stick with the Nittos (pun intended). Thanks for everyones input. This site is a lot of help.

What pressure do you run your Nittos at the track? I have the Nitto NT555R drag radials so not sure the difference between the two. I believe I will be getting the Hellwig Bar for the rear soon. I would like to get my tires to hook since I just bought them and don't want to shell out more $$$$$ for some M/T drag radials or slicks with extra rims. Nice pass in your video!
