PTE-51 vs TA-49
« on: March 03 2012, 08:23:25 PM »
I now have a seemingly fine PTE-51 turbo, I already mounted the TA-49 on the new motor.

Assuming the PTE-51 is good, should I use it? A big benefit would be that I have a Precision Vigilante 3200 stall, single disc lock up, that came with the PTE-51. If I use the TA-49, I will need to spend ~350 on a Pat's 12" 2800. I could recoup the investment by selling the Vigilante I guess.

I have the stock redone heads, and a 208/208 flat tappet cam - if that matters.

I think only Ed and I have been around to remember all the 51 problems...so use it and if it lives, you are ahead of the game...if the exhaust wheel melts, you can use something else

Are they ALL bad?

Assuming the exhaust wheel doesn't melt - and the turbo is fine - is it a better setup than the TA-49?

If you don't use the 3200 PM me a price and I may be able to do something.

It is about the same as a TE60 as I recall

needs at least a 3000 stall so you should be good to go....Don't remember if they made changes to it, or not...first they said there was nothing wrong, then they probably blamed it on the user, and finally, I heard rumors they figured out what was wrong.

The pt51 only melted fins if you didn't buy Harry's Turbo Saver
If it's still good it must have been upgraded or never used. The 3200 stall will work fine with the pt51 and be a real tire burner on a T49.

I'd sell both of 'em...and buy a 6262 journal...and mate it to that Precision 3200.
