Title: Winter Upgrades-Non TR's Included
Post by: Scoobum on October 16 2017, 11:04:15 AM
What's your list of winter upgrades? Non TR toys included in this thread...for those who no longer have a TR.

Crap I have to do on my TR. Rocker cover gaskets...new exhaust housing...get Eric to reburn this chip...change rear diff lube...new spark plugs...new valve springs... new front brake pads.

Change spark plugs on the R1...and possibly TPS sensors.

Possibly chrome out the 2010 2500 HD I tow the GN with.

The short-short version:
Build a light-weight Muncie backed twin turbo LS MCSS (just got all the hot parts for the LS)
https://gbodyforum.com/threads/copo-monte-carlo-ss.61336/ ;
Building a bulletproof 4L70E for the TBSS (dropped the hard parts off this morning (300M shafts and Sonnax Smart Tech housing))
https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/1882228-4l70e-build-tbss.html ; and
Change the 4L60E in the wagon for a 4L80E (because maybe Drag Week 2018)
https://gbodyforum.com/threads/1980-pontiac-lemans-station-wagon-its-alive.49375/ .

Unfortunately with all this work I don't have the time to keep up all the build threads on multiple boards.

The plan is to finally replace all the suspension bushings as they are original, and maybe finally get my door windows properly adjusted.

Started one of mine last night. I have the pypes exhaust and never liked how the tail pipes basically bolted to the frame with just a poly bushing to keep vibration down....not effective. I hate squeaks and rattles so I got some rubber hangers, cut the old brackets off and welded on some new hangers and made new brackets for them to mount to in factory location. This solid mount system Pypes had always rattled stuff in the trunk/rear area so I pulled the rear seat to see what I could isolate with rubber or whatever. Found several places that might be making noise so I took care of those. Behind the seat between the cabin and trunk GM has this carpet pad type insulation with plastic on it for sound deadening, it was tore in several placed and crumbling so I cut it off even with the trunk floor and threw it away. Got everything back together last night so took it to work today. Hard to believe but holy shit did that stuff stop ALOT of exhaust noise...ALOT! I'll have to get some new sound deadener and replace it because it is stupid loud in the cabin now.

The wife asked last night sarcastically when I went out to work on it " are you ever going to be done "fixing" it?     Silly woman

Get my car running!  Install motor, the new turbo, 80 lb injectors and pray!  This summer I cleaned up my 85 RZ350 and put it on the road, bike has 2600 miles on it.  I might repaint and stroke my 86 RZ350.  Here is a pic of the 85.

Thanks!  All these 2 smokers are going up in value.  I saw one like mine with 4700 miles sell for $6100 pounds in the UK.  A nice example RD400 is fetching a nice price too.

Firebird - I haven't finished this years upgrades yet! I'll spend next year for me it to get it all sorted back out!

Escape - will get replaced once I decide it's worth $400 a month to replace a vehicle that I drive 20-30miles a week.

Wife's Honda Civic - will get its yearly air filter, car wash, 2 oil changes and the tires might get rotated.

Kids powerwheels - 12v upgrade, maybe some buttons, switches, lights to play with. They aren't quite ready for a gas powered toy so we might have to get another power wheels so they can ride together or have one each so that they can race.

That rd is awesome. My dad raced his h2 when I was 5-6. I love how the 2 strokes sound.

It's an RZ but across the pond they do call them RD's.  Thanks for the compliment, I was just going to clean it up and the next thing I know I had down to bare frame.  Oh well at least I was able to grease everything. The H2 is a wicked bike!  Nice ones are fetching $10k or more.

Mike - stay away from the RST clutch if you plan to put sticky tires on the MCSS. The RXT is plenty smooth and holds like a mofo. Sorry I was just skimming your threads on the gbody forum. Did you pick a turbo yet?

Decided we're gonna pull the engine when winter breaks in March. Gonna go with shims for head gaskets to bump the compression for a little quicker spooling for bracket racing. Gonna port match the headers while it's apart as well. Alky kit is coming out as well. Gonna go with a 94 street chip from Eric. I'll likely plate the car next year...and drive fear in the hearts of the populace!

I like the proposed setup. The non alky combos/ tunes are intriguing. Turbodave had one..

My entire fleet has has been swapped out this over the year.
New 150, new escape and my "beater" is now a 2000 impala from the inlaws. Near mint condition, oiled every year. Has an iffy secondary (blower/cruise) contact on the dash ign.Another semi clever workaround needed till its warm again and the dash pulled apart.

I don't race on the streets...so alky is useless to me. The actuator will back the boost off to 16 lbs. I'll have Eric load the chip with 20 lbs of fuel. Plan is to take it to the track and tune it for about 18 PSI for the street. I'll bring the low/high gear 02's in at 800...nice n safe. Brandon tuned his in at 20 psi on pump gas...but I haven't got his tuning skills.

Turbodave's car performed extremely well on his street tune!

I'm sure your car will kick a$$ on the street!  I want to tune my car for 22 psi with the new 6468 on alky.

6468. I can't keep up with the turbos since Patrick left Precision...lo l! That's gotta be 9 second capable. Bison cracked the 9's with a 6265...which is an extra 30 HP all in over mine.

It is suppose to be a 9 sec turbo.  The car didn't go too bad considering it weighed in at 4050lbs with me in it.  I've upped my compression and I discovered a timing issue that was hurting me.

Wanna bump the compression to get it to spool a tad quicker for heads up and bracket racing.. I may use hot air shims...or RJC shims. Gonna talk to Joe about hot air shims. I have a 30 over rotating assembly here and a standard bore block I need to get down to Joe as well for a backup engine.

Dan and I always use graphites on customers cars. They're far more forgiving than shims. 135 lb valve springs on a flat tappet and craploads of low gear timing isn't something I recommend either.

It is a fully loaded street car!  I was telling my buddy with the Stage motor how heavy it was and he didn't think so.  I then popped my trunk and showed him the stereo system.  Then he was, well maybe.  Four subs with box, 6 amps, electronic crossover.  And the speakers are the pro series Infinity with 40 and 60 oz magnets.

So, I don't feel too bad that the car isn't turning crazy times.

I will say we had a lot more fun back then but a ctsv or a hellkitty is probably cheaper and a much much better car.

I had a 70 stage 1 car back in the day but in comparison the GN was better in every way. IMO.

Thunderbolt is a factory Race car. Where could you drive it to and walk away from it. I like to drive my cars to the strip run it and drive home, no trailer queens for me. Going to the mall no problem and if somebody 'borrows' it get a new one.

That's the problem with a nice old car now. Don't take our old one to a mall but it does go just about everywhere else. Oh it's very well insured just in case. Another thing about the old cars they don't take a crash like a new one.
Winter upgrades for the Mazda... maybe a set of pistons and a new cam. Maybe shorten the rear end so I can get a 15" drag radial on it. NEVER ends. :O Oh no one would steal the Mazda.. It is not a very pretty girl !

Oh I was thinking of a Thunderbolt when I decided to get another old car. BUT prices are climbing. Don't want a $200k sitting around !

We do but the Cyclone are rare.  Lots of GT500's and GT350's.  Even old original GT 40's which is crazy for such a small city only a couple.  And probably 8 Ford GT's.  And an original Shelby GT, and a good number of kit car Shelby GT's.

Oh, I know.  There is one guy I used to race against in a drag radial series.  He has 2 Hemi Cudas, 302 Camaro, 67 427 Vette, Shelby GT500 with 30k on it.  He said there is no way he could afford those cars today but he bought them at a time when everyone was getting rid of the gas guzzlers.  Something to do with a gas shortage. :icon_lol:
