last week while driving I noticed the the trans was acting strange, from 1-2 gear seemed like it was slipping or struggling to go to 2nd gear. next stop I unhooked the TV cable and pulled a few times then readjusted, the reaction was the same for about 10 min of driving then something changed, now it revs up high before shifting into 2nd drive normal, but when taking off pretty hard it doesnt want to shift into 2nd gear, linkage is still working like it should P,R,N,D,2,1 but if I put the shift in 2nd gear it will not shift out of first until I shift to 3rd, if I down shift form 3rd to 2nd I goes into 1st. my guess would be something in the valve body, but looking for other opinions :icon_confused:

Sounds like you smoked the band. Time for an overhaul.
-
I have bigger problems now timing chain broke last night
-
Yeah, I saw pix in the other thread. That is some bad luck.
That chain looks to be of poor quality. As Steve asked, what brand was it.
-
It's a progear from the number. I would go back with a rollmaster I think

Have you looked over my overhaul thread?
How much are you wanting to spend? With your power I would go to a billet shaft forward drum and dual feed the directs. Not absolutely necessary but really gives piece of mind. That said I didn't because I didn't have the budget.
Really needs a bigger 2nd servo. I used a sonnax but the ck one is a bit bigger, its a pickem. I would go with a carbon band(and I did). I am told these are set up differently than the red and stock band but tou can consult your builder or give d husek a call. He is super helpful. If you don't have it you need a larger boost and rev boost valves and the 700 spring. A shift kit might include these but Mr husek can hook you up with these also. I used a hard pair of rings in the pump and a sonnax slide spring. I stayed with the seven vane. I saw no need to go with more.if yours is the 87 it should already have he hard stator support and hard sun shell bit for about $40 it would hurt to put new ones in while it is apart. I have red raybestos stage 1 frictions in the direct and stock tans in the rest. Also you should consider cutting the piston on the overdrive and adding an extra friction. Hopefully your builder can do this. If not it might not be the builder for you.
Let me know if you have questions.

Also, those clearances in the atsg manual aren't optional. They didn't just pick them out of thin air. The parts need to be measured and clearances set just like crrank and rods on an engine. The gnttype.org and jakesperforman ce.com have pretty good pix and how to for that.
If your builder can't set the clearances I doubt your trans will last long.

Here is another thread with pix and how to. Good info.
What I have learned while studying for my build is that there are many ways and thoughts on how to put one together. You just have to figure out what works for you.

One more link for good measure.

I just went thru your tread and I dont think that I will ever try to do one myself, But thumbs up to you for getting it done. I will do some more reading and try and figure out what I will do. First thing is try to save $$$. Thanks for the info

I didn't find any of it particularly difficult. The hard parts involves looking for answers to things trans guys probably have known for years or decades. The ck book and several others on auto trans overhaul were indispensable. If you or anyone wants to try I'm here for support. I surely don't know much but things crop up and I'd try to help.

That one from Jake is good on ttype.org..... ...seems it never got finished though. Or maybe that's all that's needed :102:
-
Yeah, that Jake thread was originally at nastyz28.com but in the middle he got into a tizzy with the mgmt over there and deleted it all. The gnttype.org was able to get his permission to post it there.
He used to answer a lot of questions but I don't see him on much any more. His business must be taking a lot of his time.
That's ok we have David Husek stop by. He knows his stuff.

TexasT you were correct it was the band
