Mini starters?
« on: September 04 2011, 11:47:09 AM »
When I was talking to CHarlief1 yesterday, he mentioned some really inexpensive mini starters on eBay.

How many teeth do the stock TR flywheels have?

Did you mean something like this Charlie?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-BBC-CHEVY-3HP-High-Torque-Mini-Starter-327-350-400-/400220493493

Says it's for 153 tooth flywheels

This says it works with both??

The first one's ok and the second one is the one I've been using Mark. It'll work fine and it will also work on small and big block buicks as well. If I remember right the V6 and V8 all have the same tooth count. 162 if I remember right.

Forgot to add that the first is a PMG starter and the second one is a gear reduction type so it usually spins faster.

I run an LT1 starter in my GN. Heard horror stories about the $99.00 mini starters.

long as the engine does not backfire when cranking, they were okay.

I got my starter from the local co. in  Lanc. that I trust all my starter and alternator work for my customers. One of the 1st things I updated. I would class it as a mini. One of the few things I don'y worry about.

I can honestly tell you that one of our members up here bought one...cranked the engine once...and cracked the housing.

Yup! Blew out a freeze plug & the housing is now in 5 peices. It worked well for 5 years. Motor is still good but the housings crumble pretty easily. I have another brand new one but have been using the LT1 in my car now.

Are you talking about the gear reduction types Steve? The ones we've been getting have had engines back fire badly and never had an issue with them.
