That's great news on be the Firebird.  I guess the fueling is a lot of smoother with the cam.  I made a 330 mile roundtrip on yesterday and hauled the go kart home. I got the fluids changed and greased the a arms and such. Tomorrow I will try to figure out the wiring and see if I have anything. N

75 miles down. Other than a trans line leak and blowing the throttle body coupler off it runs pretty damn good. I checked both catch cans and they were empty, which I wasn't expecting - but I'll take it!
Tuning this thing has been too easy. I stopped data logging and started letting it learn after seeing the learn and closed-loop fueling work. It's basically short/long term fuel trims with wideband resolution and it corrects fast enough in my experience to roll into it. After the drive, move the learn table to the base fuel table and do some hand blending/smoothing. I'm not brave enough to just send it to the limiter but after a couple of drives, it's coming around quick. I've got it mapped to 8psi and about 4500rpm - so I'm sneaking up on it.

I didn’t like holleys fan logic. It was on/off via temp only. Key on above temp the fan is on. I disabled the included fan control and then manually configured output that controls the fan. It’s still controlled via temp but also has a rpm condition. It’ll only run when the engine is 500rpm (running) but shuts off at 1500rpm (cruising).

The boys and I put about 20 miles on the go-kart Saturday afternoon, the last couple of runs she was really starting to labor, pop, sputter, and just wasn't happy. The plug looked like shit and it was dripping oil out of the carb but the valve cover vent was dry. Upon further inspection, I noticed the intake valve lash had opened up to more than 0.020. Easy fix, I lashed the valves and while I had things apart I lubed the clutch bushing.
Sunday it rained off and on but cleared up around noon. I jumped in the kart, with my oldest and we set off around the neighborhood to make sure everything was fine before I turned them loose. We made it about a 1/4 mile away down the hill, and it backfired and stalled. It wouldn't start and I could tell things weren't right pulling it over. So I start pushing it home uphill and it starts pouring - and of course, it's done raining when I get back home.
I tore the recoil starter and side cover off to find we had sheared the timing key and the balancer worked itself loose lol. A quick trip to the farm store and a $0.79 woodruff key and we were back up and running on the first pull. Too bad, it rained the rest of the day - but with any luck, we can get a few more tanks of fuel run through it before I have to work on it again.
Next time the predators go onsale I think I'll need to snag one.

Pushing it a 1/4 mile is putting it in the "working on the LS" category, but the beauty of gokarts is usually simplicity once you understand how they work.

I am thinking for my next project after go karts and such is going to be building a VW Baja even tho there are no sand dunes within 200 miles

Yeah, good thing it rolls nicely with the new bearings! This thing is stupid simple, it's refreshing to know that 4 bolts and I can pull the engine and tear it down on the bench. The kids think I'm a magician when they see it come apart, get repaired and it runs when I'm done.

I got tires put on the bird today. The new nittos at least leave black marks, the bfgs were so beat they didn't even lay marks anymore

Hopefully the experience will rub off on them and carry us forward to a new generation of car guys.  Video gaming hurt a lot but some of them have seen the light and added cars to their fun.

You got your money's worth out of that set of tires.

My car has officially broken me, everything feels like a slug. I got in the CRV this afternoon and was like wtf is taking so long to get up to speed, not realizing I had it matted lol. I took my brother for a ride and he confirmed it's pretty lively for 7psi.
I pick up this POS today. 04 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 z71 170K 5.3/4L60/3.73 posi weight reduction via Michigan climate. It drives decent and runs pretty well, the interior is in good shape although the guy did smoke. Complete bottom of the barrel $2500 truck and it came with a half tank of fuel, a couple of pop cans, and some change. It's just a junker to haul crap around.

I believe you are gonna grow up to be much worse than me.  Junkers are sometimes by far the best buy.

Now that I have my own shit wagon not much to stop me from bringing more shit home!
My youngest has already claimed the truck, he wants it when he turns 16. I’m thinking this doesn’t have 9 years left it in, it’ll be a pile of dust by then.

It will be good practice for him to help you keep it going...  I had a 150 that went 325k on the original engine and tranny.  It finally cracked a head and I gave it to a friend here.  He gave it to one of his workers who bought an engine with 150k on it.  It ran good and he gave it to his son who cleaned it up and it was still running the last time I saw it a year ago.

Of course, rust is not a major problem here.
