I was able to remove valve cover & head without removing the heat shield. I did end up leaving tool marks on the heat shield though, so perhaps I should have removed it first.

EDIT: Cover the rear of heat shield with blue masking tape. The ratchet I used rubbed the paint off.

Do you have an air compressor that you can dial down to 15psi?

If so, test your PCV valve to see if it blocks flow into engine. You might be surprised.

Seems to work fine on my car. Dual Spal fans with Casper's harness. All plugged in to OEM wiring connectors.

UPDATE: Seller offers the correct kit for early model also.

Do you have a link for that kit?

Unfortunately I do not. Try contacting the seller through the link in the first post. It just arrived this evening.

Are you familiar with Bison?

I ordered a set of measured & matched valve springs, timing set, gaskets, etc. I thought the pricing was reasonable.

I had trouble swapping the springs, but that was my fault. Make sure you bring the piston to TDC on each cylinder before you compress the valve spring.

In the process of upgrading electrical. New battery, starter & alternator. Running two cooling fans on radiator & probably add another to trans cooler.

Thank you. Looks like a different rear casing, bearing, battery post & fan assembly.

...Looks to me like that is the second gen kit.

How can you tell the difference?

Steve,

Will this rebuild kit work with the CS144 typically found in '87 Turbo Regal?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/142984342064

I see mention of an "early" & "later" model CS144. Haven't found an explanation of the differences.

Thank you.

General Buick Tech / Re: PCV Valves, Vacuum Brakes & Forced Induction

...A decent pcv may leak a little under boost but the volume should not be enough to pressurize the crankcase to any great extent and cause blow by in my experience.

The silver one above had substantial blow-by.

I dialed the regulator down on my compressor to provide 20-30psi to test them.

I have some .010" stainless shim stock. I might try to cut out a disk to fit into the check valve & drill a 1/8" orifice in it to see how that responds.

...Or a Tale of Two PCV Valves.

Drove the car yesterday after a top-end overhaul. My vacuum assist brakes performed poorly. Car has been down for several months. Ran a few vacuum tests today. With the new PCV valve installed (pictured left) I have 10" of vacuum at brake booster. With the old PCV (pictured right) I have 16" of vacuum.

I applied 20-30# of pressure to the opposite end. Here are my findings. The valve on the left prevents the boost pressure from entering the block/crankcase. The valve on the right reduces flow into crankcase, but does not prevent pressurizing the engine block.

I need a PCV valve that has the proper sized orifice to provide enough vacuum to operate the brakes & still blocks boost pressure from entering the engine block.

Any recommendation s?

Thanks.

I was attempting to input that part number into the Gates parts search.

Have one ordered.

Thanks.

It's a bit of a pain to swap the pulleys.

I suggest you get a size smaller belt if the current belt turns out to be too long.  The TTA belt is slightly shorter and I usually use it with the regular pulley but it may give you what you need.  It's a 635K6 belt.  Otherwise you can go down another notch and try that.

Steve,

I'm not finding info with that part number. Are there some letters or digits missing?

EDIT: Is this correct? https://www.gates.com/content/gates/us/en/ymm/search/vehicle/result.p.8552-000000-000001.v.8552-02890.html

Thank you.
