Title: Windows 8
Post by: TWIN86GNS on March 14 2013, 09:02:49 AM
I just got a new computer yesterday, it came with Windows 8 and I am not really liking this operating system.  My last 2 computers were running XP and my son's laptop that we got last summer runs Windows 7 (also Windows 7 at work) they all worked and did things like I expected but this Windows 8 seems like it is more for a smart phone than a computer.   :013:

Any one got any good tutorial links for Windows 8 or should I just go back to Windows 7?  Can you even buy Windows 7 anymore?

Thanks in advance,

Lots are having that problem making the transition.  It can be hard to find 7 these days which is a really good system.  You are right, 8 is aimed at the touchscreen generation.  Although there is a way to go to a conventional desktop from what I understand, it may be easier to get one of those little aftermarket programs that boot it straight into the older style start up screen.  I won't be surprised to find the service pack to have this option built into it.

Windows 8 would have been enough to make me NOT buy that computer.
I just bought  new computers this week and they had Win 7 Pro and Ubuntu respectively.

So Windows 7 can still be purchased?

Windows 8 is "interesting" but I am a little more boring, I think I should switch back to Windows 7 so I can used Office 2010.  I don't know why but I am having issues getting Office 2010 to open properly.   :013:

If I could get that working properly I think I would be fine with Windows 8.  Time to do more reading this weekend.   :rolleyes;

Windows8 sucks ass. It's killing my industry.

Microsoft is making a concerted effort to piss of all current and future customers.

The biggest hurdle is the damn start screen.

There are some programs to get the start menu back.

Look here: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/01/help-ive-got-windows-8-and-i-miss-my-start-menu/ (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/01/help-ive-got-windows-8-and-i-miss-my-start-menu/)

Some are free and others are payware.

Well I've got Office 2010 working on my new computer so I am happy with that right now.  I am starting to get to like this O/S a little more and since I am cheap I don't think I will bother getting a copy of Windows 7 now.

Brad, what don't you like about Windows 7?  When we upgraded at work nobody seemed to complain too much since it was pretty similar to XP, it was almost seamless.

My only complaint with vista, after the first service pack, was the slow boot time.  I am running win7 on this machine now....Last year, when I was running vista, I used Ubuntu 90% of the time because of the fast boot.  With win7 and the SSD, the boot time is about the same as Ubuntu.

I quit using Office a few years ago and use open office now.  It is good enuf for what I do.

I think the problem with win8 is that microsoft decided it was time to go forward and it is a big change for people that came up thru the windows ranks.  Many that I heard bitching about it when it came out now seem to like it.  I think Microsoft was trying to push the technology into the next generation as so many conventional machines are not being replaced with the same.

I like and use Office both at home and at work.  Through my wife's work she was able to purchase Office 2010 for $11 as a download, so with the whole being cheap thing, it worked well for me.   :D

I really like the quick boot times of Windows 7 & 8, my old computer running XP was taking way too long and it recently started making bad noises while trying to boot.  The boot time was normal for XP but then something started acting up, not sure if it was the HD or what but then the boot time increased noticeably and it was making bad noises so that was enough of a push for me to get a new computer and this one was on sale.   :D

I don't think office has improved since 2003.
The only problem with open office is if you have to switch between open and MS office.
Lots gets buggered up.

I'm the first to admit that I'm completely and utterly useless when it comes to computers. Too many changes...at least for me...with Windows 7. I don't even know what a fukn app is.

I will give windows 7 one thing. When you tell it to shut down, it shuts the hell down.    Other than than it's just extra bloat that I don't need or want.
