how to re-install steering shaft boot clamp?
« on: September 07 2011, 07:43:53 PM »
Just installed a new steering shaft boot from Mike's Montes and need to know if there's a special 3 prong tool that will compress the boot clamp ?   :rolleyes;

Is there a trick tool the General has for this?

If not, is there a special technique?

Thanks in advance.

You might be able to use a strong hose clamp to compress it. Or just use a hose clamp by itself.

I went with the Jeep steering shaft replacement.

Thanks for the suggestion guys!

Dave.....you may have found it?

Not sure how this one works AJ ?

Guess I'll do a drive by at my local mechanic buddy at the garage.....see if I can borrow his CV boot clamp pliers for a moment?  Probably no need to buy it as I'll only need to use it once?

Still working on the car......not on the road yet?  Still got 7 or 8 weeks till I gotta put it back in storeage (again)?  eek

Got it on!

Just needed an extra pair of hands.

Used needle nose pliers and fought thru it.

If anyone is looking for a replacement boot for their rag style steering shaft (since the origianls have long been discontinued)...Mike's Montes has them available.
It's not exactly the right size...is 2" od instead of 2.25" OD, but it looks OEM stock. Just needed a bit of tweaking to fit better.
I used a 2 1/4" O ring x 1/8" and used special Loctite adhesive...bon ded to the oustided of the boot which will keep it centred in the housing....the n just filled and smoothed the void with the right stuff......let it cure and bent over the (4) securing tabs.

Could have used a gear clamp....but wanted to keep the stock(ish) look of the original.

I had to remove the jeep steering shaft as it was virtually touching the header pipe.

Yup, original Kenne Bell Headers. You don't see or hear of these often.

If you've never seen them befoe, they look like they are a copy of the ATR Header (not sure who made them first or who copied who)?  Mine are mild steel that are Jet Hot 2000 Black coated.  Been on the car for the last 3 seasons.  You can take a closer look at the next Timiies or Wild Wing meet before the end of the season.

I lied. Now it is in the car.

I don't want to meet whomever removed it from the donor vehicle because they weren't gentle with it (read: hammered it off).

Did you have to grind bolt clearance as some claim?
