Title: Primed the new motor yesterday
Post by: SuperSix on March 05 2012, 08:58:10 AM

Not sure if I am doing it right - first one I have done.  :icon_redface:

Started by trying to fill oil without having valve cover snugged down. Derp. 1/2 a quart of Joe Gibbs break in oil on the floor.
So I put an old cork valve cover gasket on the cover, and snug it down.

Put ~5 quarts in to prime, i will overfill 1 qt to do cam break in. Spun the drill - no oil pressure - Fuck. Wife was with me watching - she noticed oil coming out - then I realized I forgot to put my factory oil pressure switch back in (I was investigating where to install an old SunTune oil pressure gauge, ended up rigging my new VDO pressure gauge up) Reinstalled factory oil pressure switch - check.

Spun the oil pump - go up past 60PSI almost instantly, and I saw oil coming out of the pushrods. It seems to make a lot of pressure at a low drill speed. I made a vid, and there's some pics. Also - should the pump spin smoothly? Seemed it wasn't perfectly smooth, at first I thought the drill chuck was rubbing on something - that kind of vibration.

I rotated the crank a few degrees, a few times, to try to get all oil passages filled..

Any red flags you guys see?

Oil pressure maxed at about 70PSI.

what does one quart over full do other than aerate the oil and reduce its lubricating properties?  Make up for the oil you put on the floor?

I have read that during cam break-in, it increases oil splash on the camshaft?

I planned to change the oil after cam break in - but I am all ears.

/me braces...

it gets plenty, imo, from the top end....long as it is not getting frothed up by the crank whipping it, you will be okay.  2500 rpm could stir it pretty good...but, I kinda doubt it will be high enuf to hit it...oil level high enuf, that is....

Looks fine to me. Just do what you did and rotate the crank 45*-90* at a time while priming. If oil is making it out the top of the pushrods you are pretty much good to go.

I rotated it, but I wasn't in any way precise about how many degrees I rotated it. i need to do that again. I *think* there was maybe 1-2 pushrods that didn't prime - I will do it again, with the suggested steps before I put the motor in.

Thanks

does not have to be precise...just get oil coming out the pushrods

If you didn`t dump a can of ZDDP in...then you just wiped the cam.
