Title: Installing Valve Springs while heads still on engine
Post by: 1KWIKSIX on February 24 2016, 04:03:06 PM
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for installing #6 Exhaust Valve Spring with the Kirban tool.

Using compressed air and not finding it too bad.
I've got em all done except for #6 Exhaust.

I did manage to get the old spring off, but did struggle with it.

Can't seem to be able to manage the installation of the new keepers & retainer / spring. Lack of working space and the fact that there is no leverage on the tool make this job a b*tch.  Wrench keeps slipping off and rocker arm not staying centred over the valve to make it impossible.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I have changed 3 sets of springs with that tool and had no issues.  You may want to try to move the wire loom on the a/c system.  There is an 8mm screw under the harness that you can take out and it will give you a little room as you move the loom up just a bit

Dan leans over the drivers side and compresses the spring...and I remove the locks from the other side. When you compress the spring to install the locks...drop the bottom one in first...then the top one. I think Dan and I set the world record for the last set we swapped.

Now take it to the track and trash on it! :)

P.S. Got my SM working. Wires under the dash...either from the POS that stole it or R and R of the steering column.
