Title: Learned a new trick for easy trans removal!
Post by: Just a Six? on July 03 2012, 04:47:08 PM
This info works on a solid car that isn't full of rust spots!!
When the trans was down on the weekend it was pointed out to me how the firewall has a 1" lip overhang where it meets the body & prevents using a 3ft extension to get at the 2 top bolts. The passenger side is impossible from the under the car. Take a 5-10lb hammer & bang the lip towards the back of the body so it's pretty much flat & then your socket will slide right up for easy removal & installation! So much easier with that lip gone!

I have always used a long wobble extension and been able to get on it...Next time I have one out, I will remember your tip and make it easier

Thanks!

I just remove the coil pack to get to them.

Steve got the driver side but passenger no way! Maybe the cars vary slightly by 1/4"??
I have done the coil method many times but its still a pain to hang over the engine if you have added wires from Racetronix & Caspers etc. Plus it's hard on the back after 1/2 an hour. I did have it removed but it was taking too long.
Mike says watch this & bam they were in!

10 lb hammers rule!!  :player:

Agree with David:
Well, maybe cuz its that I'm a lard *ss but my back just can't take hanging stretched over an engine like that any more. Dunno how you guys still do it

In my younger days I spent weeks at a time playing around but I'll bet it contributed to my screwy back! I can't imagine doing that 3-4 hours a week now!

Did my bushings 10 years ago. Maybe the RJC drivers side poly motor mount affects it???

I know that Mike & his Dad have been at this for many years & both know a lot of tricks!
Plus anyone that can pick up & install a 9/11 under the car on his back with One Hand is not someone I would argue with!!!  :O   :O

Poly body bushings were worth 1/2" of lift on my car

I don't remember it being a problem taking them out but I will find out tomorrow, I have the new engine in but I still have to put in the bolts for mounts and trans.

Is it easy access to bang this lip with the 10lb hammer?

As long as trans is out then 2 mins. You'll see the lip overhang that is just untrimmed sheet metal. just bang it forward slightly. Mine was ok on driver side but pass was really tight so just a 1/4" will help. I have the HR on DS so maybe thats why its easier there?

I was able to get the bolts in with no problem, well, my neck kinda hurts. Lying on my back with jack stands sucks, God I miss my lift.

Fixed with a hammer, obviously not an electrical problem.
