Oil Pump Question

Like you said Steve, on to the next problem. I am changing the oil to put the car to bed for the winter. When I removed the oil filter these two parts feel out. What should I do? The car has always had good oil pressure. Just drove it yesterday.

Steve Wood:
I don't recognize those pieces.  You say that they fell out of the filter?

How long is that black piece?  I don't think I have ever seen anything like that in a filter being used as an anti drainback or bypass valve. 

It looks like the head of the black piece would fit into the metal piece which would close off "flow". But it would have had a spring that kept it closed normally

I’m sorry, I should be more specific. I guess it is the pressure relief valve in the oil pump housing, if the filter were to get plugged.  Can I just reinstall? Could packing the housing with Vaseline for initial start have caused this? It is out of the hole at the top of the picture.

Steve Wood:
I believe you could do that, but there should be a spring that prevents the plunger from moving until the back pressure gets to about 20 psi.  As I recall, the metal part is staked to keep it in position to hold the assembly in place.

The spring is still inside. I messaged Earl Brown who I purchased the part from. He said to reinstall and puts a couple light stakes on the edge to help hold it. Thank you for your advice.
