General Buick Tech / manual shifting
« on: April 11 2015, 08:43:22 AM »
why is it so damned difficult to shift into 1st gear?  Nine times outta ten pulling down on the shifter won't even get into low gear.  Did GM do this on purpose and what options can eliminate this?

I located an oem in Alabama few months ago and cable has been installed.  I've tried making adjustments both at the shifter and the linkage on transmission.  Very frustrating!

General Buick Tech / ecm wiring
« on: March 22 2014, 01:15:46 PM »
Been so long I don't remember if I asked before or not?  If anyone has their GN somewhat dismantled or whatever, I'd like to know the length of wiring for the two ecm splice connectors to the cap protector on the firewall.  Last year I painstakingly wired new splices from Caspers but left way too much wire to the new splices.  Before I go trimming away, am hoping someone can give me the correct length.  Thank you and God bless. :icon_redface:

For Sale/Trade/Want To Buy / Re: WTB

at one time there were several aftermarket moldings made, but really hard to find them today.  I got a call this morning from Michaels, a local uphols shop and he found what I was looking for, near identical.  They will be in on Monday, so, here's hoping.

looking for new or good used side moldings for '87 GN attaches to part of fender, door and part of quarter panel.  Need both sides or six pieces.  They are solid black and 1/2" wide at the base and have a slightly elevated center.  Also looking for the original door edge guards.

General Buick Tech / # 5 mount
« on: January 22 2013, 08:03:42 PM »
If I can get enough heaters for my garage, I'm going to attempt to install the new gnx mounts.  From what i read before, there are two mount sized holes in the cross member frame above the diff?  If I can loosen the bolts for both sides #'s 6 and 7 body mounts will there be enough room to get the mounts in place?

Mucho gracious,

General Buick Tech / Re: axle seals and brgs. install
« on: December 12 2012, 04:52:45 PM »
Appreciate your response Paul.  That tension steel band had me going for a while. Did not think there would be enough room to remove the "c" clip.  So far, so good.  I've got the drivers side axle, brg and seal out and am ready to install new hardware including drums and shoes.  Definitely doing one side at a time to keep the side gears in place.  Last time I did this to the other GN, I was able to buy 3 new OEM bolts that you pictured.  My bolt came out without damage, Hoooraw!  Seems the gear lube in this case is Royal Purple?  Really thick and a God awful color.  Anyway, I bought two quarts of Lucas Synthetic, 75-90 or 75-95 and a tube of lim slip additive.

Thanks again.

General Buick Tech / axle seals and brgs. install
« on: December 11 2012, 09:23:31 PM »
Just removed the diff cover to begin the changeover.  As I mentioned before, I've done this to my other GN but it does not have lim. slip.  Also, I did this about 7 years ago and I must be growing cobwebs in the grey matter.  I remember removing the carrier case bolt and sliding out the carrier pin which made getting to the clips a lot easier.  The only difference I can see is now I think I need to remove the double "S" shaped tension band to get to the "C" clips.  With removal of the large pin I was able to have someone push in slightly on the axles to get to the C clips.  Before I go wild on this one I need some advice as to the correct procedure.

Thanks,
Walt

General Buick Tech / Re: Batteries
« on: December 02 2012, 08:26:46 PM »
I've been using Interstate for sev years now and they are pretty good at honoring their warranty.  I went to buy some more paint at Sears at Penn Center last week only to learn all Sears stores quit selling paint about three months ago.  Also, this Sears is going belly up Jan. 1st and a Walmart will be born.  And, from the buzz, quite a few Sears and K-Marts are taking the bullet.  So, good luck on finding a Sears battery in the near future :(

Hello, hello, and hello.  Need to change the rear seals and brgs. to '87 GN.  This one has limited slip diff.  My ? is; I've done it before with a standard regular differential and familair with what needs done, but, with the posi, is the procedure and removal of the hold pin the same to remove the axles?  Many thanks. :hmm

General Buick Tech / engine assembly
« on: June 03 2012, 11:53:35 PM »
Been six long months but finally got my new engine.  The engine is held in place by the motor mounts only at present.  I've got the job of finishing assembly to the long block.  I had the transmission rebuilt several months ago and the shop advised I get the motor in and just have it idle and then the shop will install the trans and make all adjustments to the TV cable.

Is it safe to do it this way or should the trans be bolted in place before I attempt to start the engine?

General Buick Tech / No fan run
« on: July 30 2011, 11:22:37 AM »
Lord, after four months down in BShop, things are popping up.  Latest is, my cooling fan will not run when reaches temp point.  First, would like to check if fan is operable. Anyone know which wire on the connector near resistor to feed a 12 volt wire to?  How to check if resistor is bad?  Does the coolant temp sensor command the fan to run?  Just replace the two relays on the fender, Caspers has a 2 pack for about 20.00.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Paint and Body / Re: emblem install

One more for my genius??? :jerkit;   Measured the GN emblem to a "T", but screwed up on the Intercooler emblem.  It's called, not paying attention to what someone tells you.
Anywho, I got precise on the Gn emblem and placed the Intercoller emblem snug, below the GN emblem.  For not having the 1/8" spacing, it looks pretty good IMO.  Sure as heck ain't going to pull it off and re-do.  It is what it is.  Wish that was all I had to worry about.

My thanks goes out again to all the help.  Body shop is going to buff out the area where the GN emblem goes on the trunk lid as there are some very light cloth scratches, then on goes the emblem.

I'm curious about the bulge emblems, do a lot of guys just leave them off as they appear be a pain to clean and wax around?

I'm just trying to get it right the first time. Once they are placed on the car, IMO, there's no going back to do it over without messing up the adhesive backing.

Thanks for the advice.  Your measurements seem to be pretty much on the money.

Does anyone have the correct measurements as to positioning the badges on the fenders and the trunk deck?  I.E.: distance from the fender crease and distance from the door?  That would be good reference as to where to place the Grand National badge and the Intercooled goes just below in line with the GN emblem.

I think the trunk lid emblem is placed a certain distance from the left side and down from the spoiler.
