General Buick Tech / jason's education thread
« on: October 04 2014, 07:38:03 AM »
Went back to little river last night.  the track is officially 1/8th mile only now.  Spoke with Kirk about it and he said that he'd been wanting to do it for a while and also mentioned that they will be putting up concrete barriers in place of the wood rails in the future.

Made 4 passes in hopes of dialing in for the ford/buick shootout next weekend with the 2nd pass being the fastest ET.

My observations.. .. Got this TE44 installed with a garret .63 exhaust.  This thing spools way quicker than the precision .63 that I was running previously and launched with way more boost than I am use to.  Tires broke free on the 1st and 3rd pass.  MT ET streets on the rear.  I am a novice at this drag racing thing but I am getting comfortable with the launch or at least I thought I was until this set up.  Attaching logs of the night.  My apologies for the long logs but I have yet to completely figure out the logger as far as it recording everything from the second I hit the f8 to the moment I save the log.

I definitely need to work the throttle on launch and I think I may have a TPS issue as it appeared to jump from part throttle to almost wide open throttle voltage while building boost at the lights.  Also still need to dial in the o2's in low gear

if you are wondering, stock unopened block with about 90k miles, 980 springs, new timing chain and gear, stock headers, 60# inj, 340 pump hot wire, power plate, PTE slic, 3k TC with lock up but I haven't locked it yet, Jake in Denton built the tranny.   93 with alky set at defaults from razor

Best pass of the night:
60  1.73 new personal best
1/8 7.85 new personal best
mph 86.24
any and all help is appreciated

IHADAV8 Playground / Last Friday's one and only run
« on: September 15 2014, 09:15:43 PM »
Here's the time slip from the only run I got to make at little river last Friday.

First, there's been a lot of changes to my car and this was suppose to be a test and tune night.
Rear suspension changes, front suspension changes, rear aluminum drums on the car, blazer front brake/spindle swap, new MT ET streets, and an HD actuator that can actually build some boost.

I staged last and didn't get a chance to build some boost before the lights dropped.  I should've waited to build some boost before launching but I didn't. Ended up launching with less than 1 pound of boost according to the log.  I've had faster 60 ft times but not by much. My fastest is 1.78.  All the rest of the numbers were new personal bests with this car.  Old fastest mph was 104. Old fastest E/T was 12.68.

Log showed 19/20 pounds of boost which correlates with my boost guage in the dash.  One thing of particular note was that the SM showed 2.0 degrees of retard at the 2/3 shift and the lowest o2 of 784 but the log did not show any retard or any knock whatsoever. Would having the smoothing settings turned on hide this on the log?

I'm still running way rich down low and I will work on that with the tune in the chip.  By the way, I am really liking the process of tuning without using the gas pedal.  Thanks Eric!

Wish there was time to make more runs but that was it for the night at that track

IHADAV8 Playground / Tonight at Little River
« on: September 12 2014, 10:01:15 PM »
Not certain where to this topic as i am writing this with much grief.

Tonight was suppose to be a night that I have been looking forward to since I went to the Texas Nationals back in March/April. I don't remember the exact date.  I met some really nice folks there and we took a liking to each other because we shared a mutual love for the Turbo Buick.  They shared many tips, tricks and knowledge with me as I am fairly new to the buick scene.  I took all that in, researched read thread after thread, spent hard earned money to make my Buick faster. Spent hours working on my car buying second hand and some new parts.  Tonight was the night to see if that all was going to make my car faster.  I was starting to worry about the weather early this week and it wasn't looking good today.  But hey, I had told so many folks that I was going so I went.

I made one pass.  Got back to the pits anxious to look at the slip I had just picked up.  Put the car in park, popped the hood.  Grabbed the computer to save the run.  Looked at the slip, I was faster.  Picked up 3 mph and over 3 tents of a second.  Then I heard it...

Looked in the rear view mirror as what looked like a mustang flying in the air.  Ran to the fence but I wasn't the first to run for the vehicle.  Those that arrived at the vehicle immediately turned back and I over heard the voice of one telling another don't look. He's gone....

As a chinook test pilot I have heard and scene firsthand what he was trying to keep the others from seeing.  I have even shared some of my experiences with Charlie. But this one was different.  I had just ran down that same right lane.  Why did he hit the rail and not me? Why was it his car that flew in the air and not mine?  Why did his car hit that tree and not mine? Why was his car now in two pieces, half in the track and the other half outside the track under the tree?  Why?

Not sure I'll be racing my car any time soon.

I turned and saw Kirk with his phone calling for emergency services.  I walked to him as he started to break down.  I don't know the safety record at Little River but I do know that Kirk knows all the locals and this had to be someone he was close with.  I told him that I would be praying for him and the folks affected..  What else could I do?

Emergency services arrived along with the sheriffs department.  They blocked the left lane of the track as to keep the scene private which I thought was very respectful of the deceased.

My father in law and I gathered our things and drove back to gatesville. The whole drive back we discussed the events.  I am still shaken...

General Buick Tech / Turbo Compressor cover
« on: August 14 2014, 08:39:41 AM »
Can someone please educate me on the different covers.  TA verses TE verses stock verses what's out there now.

I have 3 turbos at the house and I can visually see the size differences between the turbos.  A stock turbo, and 2 turbos that are suppose to both be TE45's.   I pulled the stock turbo off the car and installed a TA49  that I got from Bison and it utlized the stock actuator.  I also have what I believe is a TE45 on a spare engine as it has an actuator with a bracket welded to it for mounting onto the compressor housing.  That actuator will not mount to the turbo that I have installed on my car and it was believed to be a TE45. The back of the acutator hits the compressor outlet when I went to install it.

Call me the noob or the idiot.  Just want to learn and know exactly what I have.  Photos would be appreciated

Kills And Thrills / Redneck kill
« on: July 23 2014, 08:25:34 AM »
Driving home from work yesterday on the same winding east range road that I always take to and from work and get behind a white silverado.  Not uncommon as lots of folks travel this road going to Fort Hood or use it as a cut through to Killeen.  Sometimes you'll see the occasional tree trimmer with their low-boy trailers overfilled with the days trimming.  Most of those folks will usually slow down so you can pass.  This day was different....
Silverado slows down in front of me, I begin to pass and a tan, heavily tattooed arm waves me to stop.  I pull up beside and the guy asks, "what do you have in there?"
I say, "just a little V6."
He says, " I got 6.0 in here, you wanna run'em?"
I say, "Sure but you'll need a head start if we do that."
In a really hick/southern drawl, "I ain't gonna need no damn head start! You ready? I'll count it down."
He counts down "3-2-1!"
I really enjoy the sound of a loud glass pack exhaust system so I let him take off about 2 maybe 3 car lengths ahead of me.  I then take a good second maybe second and half to mash the pedal to the floor.  As my TR is just shifting into second, I come by that silverado like it was standing still.
I let off the throttle and continued my lazy drive home...

General Buick Tech / Baseline suspension pro upper control kit
« on: July 15 2014, 09:25:37 PM »
Finished the install this evening along with centering the rear end and setting pinion angle to 2.5 degrees.  Here's what the calculator came up with.  I took a wild ass guess with the weight numbers as I haven't been to a scale yet.  Do these numbers look somewhere in the ballpark of making a decent launch? Questions for you suspension smart guys,  after centering the rear end, I could only get 2.5 degrees on the pinion angle as one of the upper control arms was bottomed out.  How can I fix this?

General Buick Tech / Actuator?
« on: July 06 2014, 01:57:46 PM »
Can someone please take a look at this log and confirm my suspicion that the waste gate actuator is not holding.  Boost jumps around quite a bit. Only made a 1st/2nd gear pull and little into third.

HD adjustable actuator, RJC boost controller.  Pull starts at frame 500 or so

General Buick Tech / Who's running the TA Street Intimidator heads?
« on: June 24 2014, 03:24:29 PM »
I've got a line on a set of these heads that have been set up to run a roller cam, ie, the spring pressure.  Any thoughts?  A while back I asked for some flow numbers for stock heads.  These things right out of the box flow a tremondous amount of air.  I have a copy of the bench flow for the heads in question but just the website for the stock flow numbers.
Anybody running these heads? Stroked or stock? Camshaft selection for your combo.
I have a complete engine sitting in the barn that I would like to make a mid 10 second street monster with.  You know, the occasional track grudge match machine and late model street killer.  Basically a Timex.... Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin!
Talk to me folks...

General Buick Tech / Stock Head Flow #'s
« on: May 30 2014, 12:02:38 PM »
Does anyone have or can anyone point me in the direction of a chart with stock intake and exhaust CFM numbers?  I am sitting here at work pondering the gains of the a particular aluminum head.  I have a copy of it's flow numbers at varying stages of lift but I can't locate anything on a stock head.  Wouldn't it  be nice to have my own flow bench.....
