Computer/Tech Support / SD2 tuning
« on: September 30 2016, 10:03:57 PM »
So I'm a bit confused but that's not hard to do.  Apparently there are 4 different ways to to get a target air fuel ratio at idle on parameter 2.

Set to 9.7 to turn on closed loop and use a target a/f from the PL AFR table.
Set to 9.8 to turn off closed loop, but still use a target a/f from the PL AFR table.
Set to 9.9 to turn off closed loop, and use a target a/f preset in the chip.
Set to 10.0 and higher and this will be your target a/f.

Which is preferred/best method?  I noticed on the PL screen that when the chip was installed it was set at 98 but there was no AFR correction data when the engine was running. I then changed it to 13.5 and I got an AFR correction data.

Transmissions / Drilling lightning holes in the governor
« on: July 16 2016, 10:20:49 PM »
Has anyone personally done it? What were you results? Just read a thread on TB.com, guy drilled sixteen 1/8th inch holes and got 34.3 rpm per hole.

IHADAV8 Playground / First track runs on the barn motor
« on: July 16 2016, 01:14:36 PM »
Met up with some of the DFW guys last night at the motorplex in Ennis. Keep in mind this outing was strictly to scratch an itch I've had for some time.  Hard ass street tires on the rear and the little 49 for boost.  Surprisingly I managed to launch all 3 passes on 1 pound of boost and not spin but throttle management after the launch was lacking.  The first two passes was a pedal festival. Thought I was a tap dancer with all the foot movement.  The third pass was the last and best of the night.  Managed to make it down the track without any spinning but didn't get full throttle until 38-40 mph. RPM drop at the shifts was a bit over 800.
Boost on the passes:
1 - 18ish
2 - 21ish
3 - 22ish
Had a tad bit of KR on the third pass as I had put the car in D instead of OD and the tranny wanted to shift at the big end.  That's another learning point, shift points were at 5125. Going to have to lighten that governor.  Need to read up on that before doing it.

Key things I was looking for on this outing was the mph difference at the 1/8th vs the 1/4.  You can see those for yourself in the pic of the time slips. Also was looking at the WB vs the NB. Car was super rich as the chip was burnt for the airflow of a 6262 but I cannot understand why the log has a A/F of 7.50ish but the guage was displaying 10.0.  I was pulling a tad amount of fuel from the chip but still pig rich.  Logs to follow when I get to the laptop...

IHADAV8 Playground / As the world turns....
« on: June 27 2016, 01:51:58 PM »
I haven't been as active on here lately and with good reason.  Kind of knew something was up with work for about a month or so and got the official notification on Friday.  My contractor position here at Fort Hood is not being funded this next contract year (thank you Mr. Obama) which begins on July 1st. So a 4 day notice isn't as bad as it would seem since the writing was on the wall and I have been job searching the whole while.

A little irony in the story is that I was conducting a phone interview with my future employer when my present employer was trying to contact me to come to the head shed to get the notification.

Anyways, seeing how the writing was on the wall, I took advantage of some VA benefits and took some more flying lessons in the hopes of getting an ATP (airline transport pilot) rating.  Took the written test last Saturday and made a 91.  Just need to get the practical evaluation completed now and I'm hoping the fella is available this week some time as I have a face to face interview next Tuesday morning.  More ratings equals more pay on the civilian side.

As for the new job....  Finally cutting the strings with the military and going to be flying for an air ambulance company.  7 days on and 7 days off, Wednesdays thru Tuesdays.  Have to go up to St. Louis to do their training for a couple of weeks in August or sooner, I hope.

IHADAV8 Playground / Opportunity gone....
« on: June 15 2016, 12:47:51 PM »
I was given the chance this morning to purchase the first GN that I ever had the privilege of riding in.  Lots of great memories with my friend and his car.  It's just not on option on the table at the moment.  If anyone is interested in it, let me know and I'll get you in touch.  Car is located in the panhandle of Florida

General Buick Tech / Voltage from ECM to CCCI
« on: May 30 2016, 10:51:25 AM »
I've been doing some research about code 41. I haven't had this code pop up but it got me thinking about the code 16 on the TR6 that did rear its head.  I'm still waiting for Bob to get to my TR6 module.

Code 16 on the TR6 - cam sensor signal lost
Code 41 on the ECM - cam sensor failure

From what I've read when setting the cam sensor, the voltage from the the middle pin on the connector will be between 5 - 10 volts and then will drop to 0 - 2 volts when in the window of the Hall effect sensor. I've also read that to set the code 41 on the ECM, voltage coming from the sensor drops below 6 volts.

I found the diagram for the ignition module and started probing with my volt meter. All conditions are the same, battery is on a 2 amp charger, key is on.

I have 12.46 volts at the battery
I have 11.52 volts at pin P. This is the power coming from the ECM fuse and ignition circuit
I have 11.52 volts at the at the power side of the cam sensor and pin n at the ignition module
I have 4.97 volts at the middle signal wire at the cam sensor and at pin k at the ignition module

I did a resistance check on the grounds of the module, ground wire at the sensor connector and the brackets of the module.  The highest reading was a .04 with the voltmeter set at 20.

I guess I have several questions with this. First, obviously the age of the wire and possible corrosion of the contacts in the ignition circuit would cause the volt drop from the battery to the CCCI but what is the correlation of the voltage from the CCCI to the 5-10 volts at the sensor?

Second, why haven't I popped the code 41 sense the voltage is below the 6 volt threshold at start up?  I guess I need to check voltage while the engine is running to verify/confirm what voltage is.

Third, would the ECM go into batch mode without throwing the code?

For Sale/Trade/Want To Buy / Cleaning out the barn
« on: May 11 2016, 10:29:28 PM »
Fella's,

I've decided to sale off some of my buick stuff.  Mostly stock items removed from white T.  I would rather not list it all individually but that may be what it comes down too.  I thought I might just throw out some pics and let you guys take a look and then ask about specific items that you need.  The crank and heads in the one pic are already sold.

Here's just some of what I have. engine, tranny, Two stock inter coolers, TE45 that needs rebuilt, 1 set of stock headers that's on the engine and one set that's been welded. One crossover pipe that's been welded up kind of crazy like. stock air cleaner cans with k&n filter  2 Stock down pipes with elbows and one 3inch that has an external waste gate, engine harness, 2 throttle bodies, RJC power plate for stock plenum, couple of sets of head studs for stock heads, mini starter, digital dash, 2 pair of stock valve covers. Turbo shield that's been cut for down pipe. Stock upper and lower rear control arms. Speaker hangers for the rear deck. Couple of stock fuel senders, one is digital and one is for apologize dash. Couple of fuel pumps, Walbro and a racetronix.  Stock MAF. Stock radiator fan. Set of T&D 1.65 roller rockers for iron heads. That's what I can think of off the top of my head. I have video of the engine running before it was removed.

Well... The Buick Gods have looked upon with me favor.  Jake called today and the tranny and converter are ready. i hope to be picking them both up this coming Saturday. He mentioned he might be able to meet me part way. If that's the case, I may not be able to meet up with you Rich. We will solidify plans tomorrow and I'll give you a shout.

Anyway, this thread will be dedicated to the swap with before, progress and after pics. All insight, tips and hints are welcome. It's been a long time coming... And I am ready

For Sale/Trade/Want To Buy / S cover internal waste gate actuator
« on: March 17 2016, 02:35:50 PM »
As the subject line states, in need of an actuator that is already welded to the bracket for an s cover.  OR... a bracket that I can position an HD actuator on and weld up myself.

I've been getting the run around from fullthrottle for over a month now.  A little he said she said about precision having issues with getting them the product that they are peddling.  Anyway, I'm looking for an alternate method of getting what I need.

Any and all help is appreciated!

IHADAV8 Playground / Just a little venting about life thread
« on: February 03 2016, 11:22:37 AM »
I'd have to say the last 6 to 7 months has been pretty upsetting.

It started when we lost a dear friend, Kermit Miller, to an atv accident.

Next we lost my wife's grandfather.  He was one hell of a man.  WWII vet. Retired mechanic from the border patrol.  He was in the late stages of dimensia.  Everyday for him was living in the 40's and 50's.  We went along with him but it was painful to see him not recognize us or when he would call his daughter by his wife's name.  She passed the first year that my wife and I were married 18 years ago.  Physically he was all there but the mind was somewhere else.  He would push the little old ladies around the retirement home.  One of which only spoke spanish.  We were amazed to see him translating and speaking fluent spanish.  My father in law said that he hadn't heard him speak spanish since the 70's when he retired and moved to foot hills of the Rockies in New Mexico.  We lost him to what was thought to have been a heart attack.  Turned out his heart had developed an irregular beat and he had just fainted from shortness of breath.  During CPR, one of his ribs was fractured and it punctured a lung.  He past in the hospital a few days later.

Next we lost a very dear family friends little 2 year old grandson.  This one makes me the angriest and will for a long while until I see justice.  The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.http://www.kwtx.com/content/news/Local-man-charged-with-child-sexual-assault-in-toddlers-death-365589341.html

Then a family friend's uncle died of a farming accident.  Roland was 86 and there was never a cross word spoken of that man.  Was feeding cattle and left his truck in neutral when he was pinned between the door of the pick up and a fence post.

Late Sunday my Granmom had a severe stroke.  She's 85 and a shell of the woman she once was.  She's back at home with hospice and unresponsive.  I could hardly stand to look at her in that condition.  Weighing all of 69 pounds.  I admire her for having a living will.  No food, no fluids and a DNR order.  Her mind was as sharp as ever as I spoke with Sunday afternoon before the stroke. Physically she was brittle but her mind was sharp.

I've made my mind up....  When it's time, I want to go out quickly.  Take me out to the pasture and put me down.

General Buick Tech / Random INT and BL
« on: January 19 2016, 08:19:25 PM »
Notice this yesterday afternoon.  Jiggled the O2 wire and still random as all get out. SM will be showing 127-129 both on the INT and BL then just drop to 0 then go right back to 127-129. O2's remain in the 780-800 range at idle.  Anybody seen this and have some insight?

General Buick Tech / IAT placement
« on: October 13 2015, 10:33:56 PM »
Using the stock ECM, what ramifications, if any, would there be if the IAT was placed at the back of the upper intake plenum?

Is there an interpolation chart/scale that the stock ECM uses for temp conversions from the stock IAT location?

Could/does Eric's chips account for the IAT location at the plenum?

Does it even matter where the IAT is located?
