Title: Turbo Options
Post by: Top Speed on June 25 2020, 07:40:00 PM
Lets talk about turbos.  My Limit Engineering TA61 just recently started smoking at idle.  Only put 6,000 miles on it in 15 years of street driving, but I like to get on it when the opportunity exists.  Is there a similarly sized modern turbo with better characteristic s, or should I just send in my old tech turbo for a rebuild?  Combo below will stay the same except for the turbo.

6262

The 6262 is a legitimate bottom 10 turbo...with the proper mods...and tuning. You'll be able to spool it with the convertor you already have. I ran 7 flat at 100 all day long with my 6262 on 23 PSI, a 1.68 launch and an easy tune. Vids are on my channel to back my mouth up.

How much are you wanting to spend?

Some needs to stick this in a Buick turbine housing. https://turbo4less.com/product/vsr-next-gen-62-62-dbb-billet/ (https://turbo4less.com/product/vsr-next-gen-62-62-dbb-billet/)

Don't really want to spend $2000 on a PTE 6262 CEA Gen 2, but it sure would be nice!  I am thinking a preluber on the turbo would have extended the journal bearing life.

I doubt it on the preluber....

I think a journal bearing 6262 is what you need.  $1134 at Full throttle speed.  Did not look elsewhere

Go with the journal bearing like Steve says. Watch how fast my JB spooled. 2 seconds...and a .536 reaction time. I don't take prisoners.

I hear ya.  I will check it out.  Do I need a chip revision from Eric to support the 6262?

Contact Eric about how much air your turbo flows compared to the 6262. He may have to add some fuel.

Or play with fuel pressure and /or add more meth.

Although a 6262 will work I'm more inclined to go with a 66 sbb. If your conv. will stall close to 3000 at o boost it will work well. A 6262 will be looking at taillights  LOL  Yes it's been proven.

Ok, I am convinced that compressor surged killed my turbo journal bearing.  Reminds me of when Nasty Wendy was ranting about BOV's way back when to protect against the dreaded flutter.  Now, you can get a ported cover that directly addresses the root cause of all of the failures.  So I checked out the PT6262 CEA Gen 1 at Full Throttle Speed like Steve suggested.  I need to get me one of them!

I still don't believe that compressor surge can be attributed to bearing damage.  Further, a BOV only helps on deceleration and the bad surge potentially occurs during light throttle acceleration.  Some combinations are almost undrivable.

But that is neither here nor there.  I think you will be really happy with the 6262!  :)

What is vsracing? chinaturbos with a fancy storefront?

In short yes VSracing sells offshore turbos. But they stand behind them. Summit now stocks VS racing parts, and full throttle speed has them listed on their site.

And make sure it's IN STOCK. If it isn't...go elsewhere. You've been warned.

Been this way for the over thirty yrs I've been fooling with Buicks. Plenty of sellers gone by the wayside over the yrs and many had a business model that didn't include product on hand.

Pretty damn hard in a small market place with limited volume to have an inventory that covers all variations of products.  It's a recipe for going out of business fast.  Even Summit has a lot of stuff drop shipped from its suppliers frequently.

That assumes ''somebody'' has it in stock. Sometimes it has to be built and the customer is left waiting with no idea when it will arrive.

I went to order something from Caspers-OOS. Kirban did not say they  were out so I ordered.
Took a year

Might be but when you charge a guys credit card and hold his money with excuses and out and out lies, that too is a recipe for  going out of business fast.

No kidding. I don't even consider myself a real vendor, but everything I have listed is on the shelves in my home arcade.   I don't drop ship anything.

Buick vendors were getting incredibly tough to deal with.
