Title: Help with knock log included
Post by: Robjob on August 13 2020, 10:19:22 PM
I'm getting some weird knock with a gn I just picked up. Short story is I picked up this gn and after going thru it and replacing what leaked or didn't work I pretty much brought the car back to stock engine wise. Once everything seemed fine I started to check out all the parameters and everything checked out on the powerlogger. Right now what I have is a stock turbo, stock fuel pump no hot wire kit, stock injectors, lt-1 maf with translator. I didn't mention the chip because I had a chip with the same engine parameters as what I have the only thing different is that the chip was burned for a lock up transmission and torque and I have a extreme automatics stage 2 non lock up with a 2800 stall non lock up torque attached to the engine because the stock one gave out so I put this one I had for my other gn in it. Now to the knock issue. The car idles fine and even drives fine at low speeds and gears. Everything parameter wise is also fine when cruising around town. However when you decide to get in it it will pick up and boost strong for a little bit then when it seems like it should either swithch gears or just keep pulling all of a sudden it starts to knock retard and act like it won't pull or shift anymore. I've included a log hopefully its not to long.

Weird shit going on. MPH isn't reading. Frame 810 to 894 tells me you have a lean fuel issue with barely running any boost. Timing looks to be high in high gear as well. My guess is it's going lean and falling on it's face. What chip is in  it? Is it set correctly with the Translator?

The mph is not working I think do to the cable every since I went to the stage 2 tranny it stopped working thinking. Right now I have a tt chip 5.7 set for stock boost, injectors, and fuel pump. The only thing different is the transmission deal.

The MPH has to be working for certain features in Erics chip. Contact Eric. I'm seeing it going lean in the frame numbers I posted at low boost. Make sure the timing is on its defaults.

Fix the speedometer.  Make sure it has the driven gear installed in the "bullet" that sticks in the side of the transmission (the cable screws onto the "bullet").  Pull it out and there should be a gear inserted on the other end.

Ok I definitely will fix the speedometer either today or tomorrow.

So I have fixed the speedometer and took two more logs. The first log was me taking off out my driveway. The second log is on the freeway. At part throttle it seems to pick up great and pull and go. However, as soon as I stomp down it knocks, runs thru my knock sensor lights like a champ so I just lift. It goes away and once again able to pull hard at part throttle.

Looks like a bad motor mount-probably drivers side.  Or a loose exhaust that is moving and banging into the body...check the transmission mount as well

3rd gear isn't showing. Is this chip burned for the exact combo you're running?

I am thinking that Eric does not use either the third or fourth gear switches.  I believe the factory used them for egr.

The supply the ground for the TCC

Nope, that is provided by the ecm

As I understand it, the egr can only be in effect when the car is getting a signal from the third and fourth gear switches in the valve body and the converter is locked which means the car is cruising at light load.  Since the modern chips remove the egr function, it matters not whether the switches are working.

They don't affect the actual converter lock up.

As far as the chip it is sorta  burned for the set up, I will explain. It is not the specific chip for the set up. The chip was burned for stock fuel pump, stock injectors, stock lock up tranny, and torque. Everything is true except for the transmission. The transmission is a non lock up stage 2 tranny, with a non lock up 2800 stall torque.

I'm pretty sure the ground path inside the ECM come from the switches.  It's been years since I looked at the internal schematics.   The image on your page just shows that it is a ground inside the ECM on the TCC circuit, it doesn't show where it gets the ground.

And they 100% control TCC lockup.    On my original transmission, I had a flaky igntition feeling on the interstate and it was the TCC rapidly unlocking and locking back up.  New switches fixed that.

When my car sat after being stolen, my new Dynatech transmission lost both it's switches while sitting (which is very odd considering they're NC switches).  They just miraculously went to open.

Two new switches restored the TCC and the powerlogger could see the gears again.

Is it still running rough after you stomped on it on the freeway and the knock sensor turned red.

You might wanna drop the tank and put a GOOD 255 in it instead of the O'Reillys over the counter one. Hotwire kit would be good. High gear timing is to high cuz I THINK Eric uses MPH to set 3rd gear timing. Too much high gear timing in 3rd gear at WOT ain't good.

Hi everyone sorry its been awile since Ive been on been dealing with these California wild fires and waiting on a chip. So, I ordered a new chip, but I seem to be having the same problem. The car seems to run fine at part throttle but as soon as I get in it it knocks as you can see from the log. Here is the new log with the new chip.

Once again, I do not see anything that looks like real knock.

I gave you a list of things to check the last time.  It still stands.

You are so quick out of the throttle that it is really hard to see which came first, you letting off, or the car pulling timing.  You must have millisecond reflexes.

The car not running right may be due to all the timing that got pulled, or it may be because one of the coil packs, or more, might be bad.  I think Brad mentioned the fuel pump before.

Fire fighting is no picnic, for sure

What gear are you in at frame 398. If you're in 3rd gear...then look at your timing. At 4 lbs of boost...what's your fuel pressure.
