Title: valve train noise
Post by: Shimy87 on October 27 2014, 06:23:29 PM
Car is running good so now I wanted to know if there are any options out there to fix this ticking noise. The sound is like a clicking lifter. Is there any way to correct this or am I stuck with it. Also is this a precurser to a larger problem

Mite be the cam starting to head south...or a bad lifter.

Gotta yank the intake. Mite wanna start saving your pennies for a roller cam setup from FT.

I had a ticking noise on my car.  Searched it all over with the old broom stick/screwdriver/stethoscope trick.  Drove me nuts.  Noise would come and go...  Turned out the crank sensor was a touch loose and the whatchamacalli t on the crank would hit the sensor ever so slightly.  Good luck

I think its lifter noise, sounds like a ticky lifter. Problem is I only hear it under engine load. Setting in garage in park it wont tick. Go for a drive and its there if you listen for it. It annoys the shit outta me, the wife cant hear it. Shoulda just put a new set in when I had the intake off :(

Lifters have to spin...and if they don't...then it takes out the cam lobe(s). I highly recommend spending a few extra buck on a roller cam setup...to avoid this. There was a guy in Michigan selling cams real cheap a few years back...so yours truly gave one a go...and this was the result. As soon as it started ticking...we swapped out to an ATR cam I had kicking around.

My confusion is a ticking lifter should tick at idle....its quiet without a load on motor. Drive it and it ticks?

Under load tick could be an exhaust leak

Exactly why I use header gaskets and an RJC turbo gasket. After a million heat cycles...nothi ng is straight...at least in my opinion. I also use proper header to x-over  pipe exhaust nuts and studs...availa ble from your favorite exhaust shop. I slowly tighten the x over nuts on...and check with my finger to make sure the flange is even all the way around for zero leaks.

I have checked for exhaust leaks way to many times to count when searching for why no boost. No leaks. Wouldnt an exhaust leak tick sound off when bringing up rpms even in park? Load or not, exhaust leak ticking would be there, wouldnt it??

Throw it in gear in the driveway...and foot brake it a tad...should be able to hear the exhaust leak under load.

Interesting thread. My car has a tick as well, but it seems to go away after the car is completely warmed up. Good luck on your find

Remove the belt.  Start the car and run for 20-30 seconds see if the noise is gone.  That will eliminate all your accessories.

dosent make the noise in park, gotta drive it to hear it? Its lifters or exhaust leak...leaning towards a bad lifter.

did you confirm no exhaust leak.  I would suspect that first before lifter.
