NEW speedo cables

Wo0t!

Finally getting a NEW speedo cable. No more bouncing, squeaking needle. I replaced the original with a used unit one - no more. I hear the new ones are a single piece.

I DON'T look forward to pulling out the dash again.  :evil:

Got my new cable in today.. One piece, and the cable end that goes into the speedo is nylon.. Should be MUCH quieter..  :w00t:

I think it's "none-the-less". but I digress...

If I remember correctly, it was a PITA due to having to pull the dash. And it didn't solve the problem completely, the needle still gets a bit wonky over 75.

People used to know that speedometer cables need to be greased to eliminate the bounce...can work miracles unless it ran dry for so long that the inner cable became frayed

For those of us that are mechanically challenged...h ow do you grease a speedometer cable?

If you are the simple type, you pull the cable out of the housing and smear white grease, or whatever you have, all over it and reinstall it.

I think there is actually a tool made to pump grease thru the housing, but, I am the simple type.

The factory grease dries up and gets hard with age and heat and the cable gets jumpy.  Kinda like me.

At the speedometer or where the cable runs to under the hood?  Keeping in mind, I don't have a sweep speedometer anymore and use a SW gauge.  I had to install something (it's been years) under the hood to make it work right.

I have never been able to separate the two piece cable where it screws together...see ms to be welded together on my cars

You disconnect the cable housing at the speedometer end, and at the tranny end.  Pull the actually cable out, clean it, lube it, slide it back thru....on a two piece you have to separate the cables and do it individually

If you're really simple like me...you use the MPH mode on the SM.

There is a tool that you can use. It attaches to the tranny end of the cable and you use a grease gun to lube it. I've got one and KD made it years ago. Looks kinda like the tranny part where you screw the cable to, but has a grease zerk on it instead of the hole for the gear.

The only issue I ever had was if grease had hardened up it was a total PITA to lube.
And remember, when dealing with children, silence may be golden but duct tape is silver.
