Title: Rear swaybar
Post by: daveismissing on February 16 2012, 08:14:47 AM
What are the sizes of the stock and ATR rear bars?
Title: Re: Rear swaybar
Post by: Scoobum on February 16 2012, 08:44:28 AM
The search function says the ATR is 1 3/8's  and the stocker is 7/8's.

Interesting. Many other aftermarket stuffs seems to be 1inch?
Hard to believe people need to upgrade beyond ATRs.

ATR is a cheap upgrade...the other stuff is pricier. HR seems to be the hot ticket.

might compare the Hotchkis rear bar to the HR for pricing...look similar to me in design?  Always buy thru a Hotchkis distributor for good pricing

The newer bars attach to the axle and frame and the older bars attach to the lower arms. With the link between the axle and the frame there's less binding and better control so they don't need to be as big. :D

Hellwig 55809
Hellwig 5815
both one inch - what the difference?
Title: Re: Rear swaybar
Post by: Charlief1 on February 16 2012, 08:11:13 PM
The first one is tubular and attaches to the axle and frame and the second one is solid and attaches to the lower arms only.

Post by: SuperSix on February 16 2012, 08:21:39 PM
5815 is a larger stock replacement - 55809 is a pro touring adjustable

looks like the 5815 is solid, the 55809 is tubular.

55809 is the one to go with... for the money it can't be beat. I got mine from Never Enough in Michigan and had a good experience dealing with them.

but not as good a deal as this one  http://www.race-mart.com/Hellwig-HEW-55809.html (http://www.race-mart.com/Hellwig-HEW-55809.html)

My Hellwig got my  not so consistent 12.5 GN,to a consistent 11.9.Some of the hardware was not that  great but its a good piece.

The price is certainly right.   How is the daily driving?  It should be better if the rest of the suspension is in good shape...or so I would believe :)

ON my car
Daily driving and up and down movement is very good
here it comes BUT you need to get use to it as it feels like a strange over steer????
i can now launch the car straight with NO air bags and take a 30 MPH turn at 60 or better with little to no lean.
i have two videos one with out and with and you can clearly see the BIG deference.

I want comfort - my main use for the car will be cruising, very little track runs.
Title: Re: Rear swaybar
Post by: Charlief1 on February 22 2012, 11:17:44 AM
If the sway bar is connected to the axle and the frame it won't change the ride at all Mark, except in corners. If it attaches to the lower arms it can because it will creat a binding issue with the suspension.
Title: Re: Rear swaybar
Post by: Steve Wood on February 22 2012, 11:31:54 AM
it does add to the spring rate so that on a wavy, or irregular, road, it will stiffen up the ride a bit, but that can be a good thing when conditions get bad and you need ride control.

Mine is set on the stiff setting for the track it drives different enough I'm working on a way to make it easer to adjust from stiff setting to the soft to and from the track

OK your driving down the Highway cruising at 65-70 Mph and a turn comes up guess what, your not leaning all over the place it sits nice and level.

(http://img.tapatalk.com/629bb6d5-7a66-ba47.jpg)got pic it's a shock bolt I cut some of the 1/2 threads off. Then put a 3/8 bolt through. know I can change setting easily I couldn't stand the 7/16 bolt Hellwig sent in the kit

Hellwig sent a long 7/16 bolt that went through the sway bar and the dog bone looking link. easy to remove but the fit was bad,GM shock bolt fit much better and aloud more articulation on the link transfering the lode from one side to the other smother.Stick a jack under one side and jack it up slow and watch how fare it goes up before the load is transferd to the other wheel. That is why I used a shock bolt but making the adjustment was a pane. With this mod I can do it at the track.

Hawk HP+ in the front, stock replacement in the rear.

I just ordered a Hellwig. Race-mart has a great price, but they charge $25 for shipping.  I ended up having summit price-match them since they I needed something else from them and they ended up waiving S&H on the whole order.

Wouldn't the g-bodies have rear axle lateral movement w/o the OEM-style swaybar, especially with the flimsy stamped lower control arms ?  Upgraded lower control arms with stiff bushings would be a good idea with the pro-touring type bar.

Drey did this with his small block Pontiac, ATR bar and drag radials. I guess old school works too :P

The movement in the axle isn't enough to worry about. Stiffer bushings will only make it a harsh ride. If you want to upgrade the bushings go to speedway motors and look at part number 916-34048. It's a stock style replacement with a heim joint in it so the axle is kept in place better but moves up and down easier.

No, because it is a triangulated 4-link.

Upgraded bushings help deal with the deflection, I use a combination of roto-joints, rod ends, poly-U and rubber bushings out back.
