General Buick Tech / Power Seat Motor
« on: August 20 2018, 03:14:51 PM »
stopped at a car wash this morning and they moved the seat forward to vacuum.  that's when the seat motor decided it was time to strip the gear, or hopefully, break the coupler...'86 car

Is it possible to manually move the seat back so I can get a more normal driving position?

General Buick Tech / Window dew wipes-inner staples?
« on: August 03 2018, 10:20:56 AM »
The window fuzzy (not a fuzzy on our cars) is attached to the upper door panel with some staples...I wonder where you find replacements?  I have seen them advertised for Mustangs but not for our cars.

IHADAV8 Playground / Endoscope
« on: July 28 2018, 11:09:43 AM »
About a year ago, I bought an endoscope to use with my phone..it is an Depstech if you want to tell me how much better yours is  :068:

It works great and the only downside is that I have a usb-c port on my phone so it needs an adapter to plug in.  Very handy to see where I cannot see.

Recently, I could not find the adapter which chapped me off.  I bought another one..same brand...that works off wifi.  Now, this thing is great.  I can plug it into my battery storage pack for power, prop the phone up wherever I want and concentrate on aiming the probe.  I used it yesterday to look thru the valve cover bolt holes to be sure, I had the cover lined up right.

Eliminating the cable to the camera makes it much easier to take a pic or movies without losing aim of the probe.

I bet Earl has a bunch of these things for examining various orifices

Yeah, I found the adapter about 30 minutes after ordering a new one...of course, but, they are cheap and I like the new one

General Buick Tech / Intercooler Tech

Seems a bit complicated for a Shout Box discussion :)

Once the technology has been discussed, it seems to me that the next logical progression is practical application.  Pros and cons of vertical vs Horizontal tubes.  End tank design vs practical application of said design on a given platform.  Large tubes vs smaller tubes with regard to cooling via expansion within the tubes vs surface cooling or convection against packaging constraints, etc.

And, practically, is there any difference given packaging restraints-is there really any significant, demonstrable, gains to be achieved thru design over current available designs ?

Sorry, I got lost in my mind on this one...Dr Pepper has not taken effect yet this morning

General Buick Tech / New Front Tires for the GN
« on: July 09 2018, 02:20:41 PM »
I parked my GN back at the end of 2014 and did not drive it again.  The primary reason I parked it was due to it smoking like a mosquito fogging truck.  It was down right embarrassing.  The alky system died about the same time and I dented the hood due to personal stupidity so all the roads led to parking it.

My diagnosis on the smoking seemed to point to the valve seals or guides being gone.  I did not have any significant blowby.

William has been bugging me to let him come down and work on it but I did not want to spend the money-especially not with the local machine-shop bandits.  A couple of months ago, I decided to try to fix it and decided to buy a new set of Champion iron heads but I could not bring myself to spend $1500 for iron heads.

I talked to Billy Anderson and he had a set of ported irons in the shop with 500 miles on them with T&D rockers, and the Champion valve covers, and gaskets so I made a deal with him.  He cleaned the heads and lapped the valves.  They already had roller cam springs on them.

I started stripping it down and William came down last month and we swapped them.  The old heads had a single GM shim under them and were about 20 years old...they were still in good condition in spite of seeing 30 psi a couple of times.  He brought a replacement hood with him.

We went back with 0.040" Cometics which cost me a little compression but it runs well.

The old heads showed the seals popped off and a bunch of shattered dampers.  I guess those times when I over revved it past 6000 rpm with a big pop did not do them any good?

At any rate, cranking it up showed we got rid of the smoke altho the turbo seems to be spitting a little oil out the exhaust every once in a while.

When I went to get it inspected, they argued with me about the drag radials being too worn to pass as they were right on the no pass line.  They finally let it go and then found out the brake lights were not working.  Turned out the switch on the pedal was stuck closed and I pulled one off the other regal and got it inspected.

The tires on the front were from the '90's and made me nervous even tho they still had some tread so that is on my list of to do's.

The drivers side window stopped working and the gear in the drive was stripped.  Put a new motor in.  Now, I need to replace the rotten window fuzzies.  They crumbled when the door panels came off.  I am staring at them laying on my work table hoping they will install themselves.

In the mean time, the converter was too tight to stall the T66 and the 911 I had put on it once grenaded so I was back to a tight converter.  Few years back, I took a chance on buying a Vigilante on FB.  Got it swapped last week.  Someone had written 3500 stall on it but it was turning the rear tires around 3000 when the boost started to come up.  I discovered that when I used the tranny lock, it would take off and head to 3500 where I lost my nerve.

It is loose enuf that the engine does not die when dropping it into gear when it's cold and is not too loose to feel sloppy when easing into the gas.

At any rate, I got back to worrying about front tires.  I have the GTA wheels and they don't offer much for 16" rims (or 15" either).    I ended up buying BFG G-Force Comp 2 A/S and got them put on Saturday.  I was going to put them on the rear as well but the car is running so well that I wonder if I should stick with DR's, but it is not much fun out here to get caught in a thunderstorm on DR's and they don't always like to stop on a dusty road in my experience.  The current DR's (Nittos) are not very sticky anymore as they are quite a few years old as well but at least, I think, they are from this century :D

General Buick Tech / Turbo Tech

Talking to Brad about turbos and my opinions about on certain turbos led me to look for a write up someone had doen in the past about the problems with some PTE units.  I recalled that the guy had torn down a PTE bb unit and noted that the bearings were small compared to other manufacturers such as Garrett.  I could not find the write up which is a shame because it was very detailed.

In the meantime, Brad sent me a link to a current thread on the other board.  It was started by a guy selling WORK turbos and some others and I noted he mentioned the bearing problems.  I also remember that PTE used steel thrust bearings on some units instead of brass like the other companies and this lead to failure as well prematurely.

Anyway, I don't read the other board, but, I thought this is an interesting thread

Here is the actual article the guy is writing      https://www.boostedrps.com/single-post/2018/06/20/Turbocharger-Cast-and-Billet-Compressor-Wheels--Not-all-Billet-Wheels-are-Made-EqualDont-Overpay-Or-Be-Fooled-Into-Buying-The-WRONG-Turbo

General Buick Tech / Test time! Cam Sensor unplugged
« on: June 08 2018, 06:58:35 PM »
Will some of you guys that have large injectors do me a favor?  Crank your car up and unplug the cam sensor connector plug.

I have always thought that the car should flip into batch mode and keep right on running as if nothing had really happened.  Not every ones' car does so, however.  Now, John Spina just told me that the car assumes it has stock injectors when it flips over so cars with big injectors may run badly because they are running very rich.

My cars have SD chips and that may be a difference maker.

So go pop the connector and see if you will-if you have larger injectors.

My son picked this up.  Should be fun.  It has had some more work done to it before he got it so the brakes and stuff are good now.

I have been thinking of a few mods to my site.  One of the things I have done is add a link to Brad's TurboBuicks 101 videos on the home page.  He really has a knack for videos in my opinion and his videos are very helpful to those coming into the Buick world.

IHADAV8 Playground / Jason, Static Electricity
« on: August 31 2017, 03:47:10 PM »
I remember that when we did long line work moving equipment from front to rear, that static electricity was a problem.  I assume this was from hanging the line below the chopper with a big basket of equipment on the end while moving a mile or two down the line?

I am guessing it is not a problem in rescue operations because the line is not moving thru the line and the rescue basket touches the ground or water when it goes down?

IHADAV8 Playground / Muscle Cars?
« on: June 01 2017, 02:05:37 PM »
Fun Mode, Beast Mode, Grandmother Mode, Work Mode

0.66 liter to almost 9 liter.  45 hp to about 700 hp. Left hand drive, right hand drive. 4 cylinders to 8 cylinders.

Only one of these could be considered a muscle car and the purists would disagree and call it a pony car.  It's not black.
