Title: Pin the tail on my oil leak!
Post by: DCEPTCN on June 13 2006, 01:57:55 PM
Okay, I did the rear main and there was nothing wrong with it....that's not where I'm leaking from. Oil is running down from somwhere near the rear of my pass. side head. This is only a guesstimate, 'cause I can't see behind the engine very well. My starter is all oily and it makes it's way down the crossover pipe. If I could talc the area back there, it'd be no biggy, but it's up against the firewall, y'know? Any guesses/common causes?

Valve cover gasket. MAYBE the oil pan gasket, see if the bolts are tight. Which pan gasket did you use?

Hey, that's good thinkin', hadn't thought of that. The oil pan gasket I just did- it was neoprene and the bolt were torqued properly. I'm sure it's not that. The valve cover is a good point, though- the gaskets are the cork ones. Mybe I'll pop that bad boy off tonight to look for evidence of that.

Yea - it's more than likely the valve covers.

You could get away with possibly snugging the bolts down, but if you can't remember the last time you replaced them, put a new set on there.

I probably will just spend the whopping $4 or so to replace them.....last time I was putting the valve covers on, I snapped one off in the block. That was a load of fun. I'm not sure why I only replaced the one at that time. Hopefully just a little Right Stuff will cure the leak.

You're right, what am I ever gonna hafta take the valve covers off for? lol

I hope this is as simple as a leaking valve cover gasket......th e list of excuses why I can't go to the track is getting shorter by the minute. I almost want to hug whoever it was who banged up my Regal, 'cause the adjuster is cutting me a check for the damage on Friday and I've got my fingers crossed that it will be a good amount toward a new Power Master.

Also check the back of your intake manifold. Sometimes
they leak between the intake and the block.

I think I can hold 4 or more on the street with radial tires....

My car will roast the rear tires at 4 psi, even with the S-10 wheel cyls.
3 psi, is usually max for me.

Saturday I ordered a new powermaster, vac block, battery hold down, new turbo oil feed line, new 160 degree thermostat. Today I went and bought some gas......the gas prices have finally effected race gas. Generally it's $7 a gallon, but today I bought two 5 gallon drums of VP 110 and it was $94.  :bigeyes; WTF.

Did you reconnect that vacuum hose by your coilpack?

The 'T' that is for the boost guages? Yes. Now my car isn't boosting for shit and it's shifting something freaky. All we did was put the fucking tranny dipstick in, so I can't imagine WTF could be wrong. My first instinct is that when we put the turbo brace back on, while tightening it pulled the pass. side header off a little. That would explain no boost....and boost/rpms could explain it shifting funky. I need to explore all of this shit tonight. Before we put the dipstick tube on, it was running just fine, so it *HAS* to be somehow related to something we touched the other day. Dammit, and I'm s'posed to hit the dyno in a week and a half. I'm leaking hella oil again, too.....I hate this fucking car.

BTW, just out of curiosity what should oil pressure be at idle after the engine has warmed up?

About 20 psi, some will be a little lower.

Mines currently around 10~12, is this a big deal? It shoots right up when you give any gas....

Thats a little low , but not drastic. I'd recommend changing the oil more
frequently since you've been running alky. The alky has a tendency to attract moisture in to your crankcase, thus thinning the oil.

I did away with alcohol last year.....and my oil has never gone more than 300 miles at the longest without being changed. Not because I'm an oil changing nut, but rather because I need to drain it for repairs like every 5 minutes. I'm putting a new oil feed line on the turbo and doing away with my current oil pressure gauge, the lines to which are huge and likely help to lower my oil pressure. Plus, having an oil might contribute to the low pressure as well, right?

10-12 is still ok you should have at minimum 10PSI per 1000 rpm. Does your oil smell like gasoline?  Does it look like a milkshake?
