General Buick Tech / Re: Stock Header removal
« on: March 08 2020, 11:27:29 PM »
I did, but I wanted to retain the factory look. If the crack is at the 3-5 junction, and probably is, it’s a good idea to have a gusset welded in for added strength.
Check the flanges with a straight edge before install.
Any headers I’ve repaired I’ve always had the flange machined arrow straight and no gasket. Never a problem after.

Like Steve said, install a TT chip, make sure compression is 145-150 on all six +- 5psi then install a vac gauge and make sure it’s pulling 15-16” of vac.

Too much data and too many variables are not always a good thing.  Therefore, Stone Age it now and then
Very True . Some forget the basics. Easy to do really.
I'd fix the knock issue first.
 :chin:

lol....my best run ever was going via stone age. Just focused on the SM and boost........p oint n shoot

Take a very good close look at the vacuum lines from turbo to Y

JMO, but I’m pretty happy with the adjustable UMI uppers I run. Installed properly with the right PL on the PS bar, my car not only lost .12 in the 60’, but also centered up the rear more square and I could eliminate the very small spacer I required on one side. Dropped to high 1.50’s 60’ from struggling to run a 1.7 on same tire and set up.

Just an update guys. I FINALLY got the car running to perfection!
It was a combination of a number of things but mainly a serious DS header leak ( there’s a surprise uh) poor rotted vacuum lines, injectors and dialing the tune back in. Proper gapped plugs wires ect.

It’s running absolutely fantastic!
Just a big thank to EVERYBODY’S input! The cars can certainly be a challenge at times. It’s been 5 months almost to the day since I bought this, so definitely a lot of work in her. Still lots but real sweet having it running perfectly, all parameters on SM are bang on.

I personally always like the GTX, way cool and the ‘70 Runner. My brother had a ‘70 RR 383 Magnum
That being said, the one car that gave the Mopar guys fits in those day was the STG 1 GS Buick lol
In stock form against each other, the Buick would outrun a Hemi

Jim...if the crossover pipe is fukd...don't get one from Kirbans. I grabbed one from them a few years back...and it didn't come close to fitting. The studs will prolly snap. Pull the header...it ain't that hard...and install new ones. I know you don't like gaskets...but if any exhaust gases escape to the atmosphere it'll spool slower and your BLM's will be out of whack. I run both header gaskets and a turbo flange gasket. I've got 'er sealed up tight. Ya' I know. They never had gaskets...but after a gazillion heat cycles...stuff warps.

Thx, yes I’ve done the headers a number of times.
I’ll pull the crossover off and see what’s going on with the ball n flange there. I have to do the pan gasket anyway so I’ll dig in. To me it looks like some stooge has been in there trying to fix the oil leak and installed the gasket wrong, but at the rear of block you can see ALOT of the rubber gasket hanging out from the pan. Almost looks like they missed the bolt holes in the gasket lmao WTF??
 :rolleyes;

Ok, got side tracked with detailing and such but had it running again today. TT Chip installed! MAF hose is/was in good shape but yes, I’m guilty as I missed a couple of very small tares which where repaired. (Thin smear of right stuff on inner and outer surface)
Started it up this afternoon and INT is 128, BL still at 142. All other values look good.
So while prowling around under the car on jack stands looking for my source of oil leak (brand new valve covers gaskets installed) so I’ve eliminated that possibility (nice n dry up there) I discovered the exhaust IS leaking at the DS crossover. I can feel it against my hand on block side.

So, I will pull the crossover off and go from there, as it looks like I have to do the pan gasket and rear main seal anyway
Thanks to all you guys for your input. Yes, I feel like an ass!! 😂

Way too much thinking going on. Take the car to the track and turn the alky off. Throw in Erics 112 race chip. Watch Scoobs vid on how to drain the tank faster than you can guzzle a beer. Toss a can of 112 VP in it. Drop the low gear 02's to around 780 and bump the low gear timing up. Turn the boost to 23 or higher...bring the revs up to 3000 grand on the footbrake...an d hang on for dear life. It ain't rocket science.

Can do same and turn up to 28-29 with alky and save $140 in race fuel
