Warped Axle Flange?
« on: September 14 2011, 08:20:34 PM »
I am showing ~0.025-30" run out at the axle flange, which becomes ~0.050" at the outter edge of the rotor, which then translates into the undulating caliper that runs out ~0.035" (see video).

I am willing to bet it has been like this since last March when I swapped the axle studs.

Me thinks I need a new axle. Should I figure to stop driving on this until I get a replacement?

I guess it is possible, but, not that probable.  Could it be an axle bearing?  I don't think driving on it will lead to sudden failure, but, it might wear the bearing out with time?  Just guessing

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.

Well I smeared a little Sil-glyde on the caliper bracket and guide clips which killed the squeak.

I am pretty certain that it isn't the bearing because there is no "groan". I'll start shopping for a new/replacement piece(s).

In the meantime I am going to finish out the race season on it.

That's not caused by a bearing [be sure to check it though],but you AREN'T finishing out the racing season on it,unless you're an idiot.:)

So is the prevailing opinion that the axle is bent or could it be just the flange?

My money is on the flange.

And yes, I am an idiot. But, in all seriousness I'll find a replacement.

Only the outer face needs to be true and could be machined?

Good thinking....an d not idiotic at all. :cool;
I would just buy a couple of upgraded axles and be done with it.
They shouldn't be much more than a replacement stocker and you'll be future proofing yourself.

Take off the rotor and check the runout off the axle flange.  Warped rotors can be deceiving.

I thought I did that already? (first two photos) Also, I should point out that I did also measure around the outside of the flange and it showed ~0.015 of run out; just in case you were speaking to that.
