Title: GM Alternator Question
Post by: Scoobum on September 14 2014, 08:25:38 PM
Got a 1998 GM alternator here that drops to 12 volts at idle...but goes to 14 above 1500 rpm's. What's gone wrong inside of it?

sounds like it is not getting energized and is acting like a one wire alternator.  Does it have a volt light activation like our Buicks and it it sending voltage to the alternator when the key is turned on?  Otherwise, I would guess the regulator is bad

It's in my 4x4...no activation lite. Spose to start raining tomorrow. I'll check it when weather permits.
