I just picked up a 1986 GN and id like to verify its a GN and not something else.
Trunk RPO codes?? I didn't even look at it but i wouldn't believe it anyway its too easy to replace a trunk lid.
Would the Vin# be useful?
The Eight digit IS a #7.
Is there anything else that can be used to positively confirm its a GN??
Cowl tag??
The body--All fucked up and wrong badges all over the place
The interior--same as above
thanks for your help.

Check the trunk lid label. Should have RPO option code WE2 for Grand National. Also make the the VIN on the label matches the VIN on the car. If you have any issues call me and I will stop by.

My blood pressure just went through the roof ill call the guy later on tonight.
On the WH1 i am not knocking the car as WH1,gn,T and t-type to me are all the same shit "Regals"
But for a quick resale to a none Buick guy if it doesn't say GN its a "Fake GN".

Not a total loss. It can be worth as much as a real GN if you restored it back to the two tone paint and the rest to make it a real designer series WH1. They only made around 400 of them compared to 1000's of GN's. But if you were sold on a real GN then you were taken for a ride.

looks like you own a WH1

I really love the 86 WH1 cars. I would love to have one some day, I just need to "justify" it to my wife.
The WH1 cars are very rare and to me and some others is worth a premium.
Also from your VIN I believe your car is an early model 86 car that was actually built in 1985 (as an 86).
Enjoy your car,
-
is the color of the car on the RPO code or cowl tag or both??
-
An 86 WH1 car is a specific colour, it is black on top, silver (grey) in the middle and black on the bottom, just like the picture that Ed posted of Bannings car.
I would assume the cowl tag will show either the code WH1 or the colour 19 black and 12(?) Grey for the exterior colours.
They only made 463 WH1 cars for 1986 so you have a very rare care, enjoy.
-

its on both
on RPO posted
19U thats code 19 black upper
15L thats code 15 platinum lower

In a way this sucks, this car has been seriously butchered.
It has some of a GN interior, and its painted all black - yes it was done to pass as a GN.
My plan was to drop in replacement wire harnesses (dash and engine) put in a new GN interior fix everything wrong with it, get a clean bill of health from another Buick guy and ship it to FL.
Now i have something rare in my hands and i am sortta thinking more along the lines of (i have something special) do i just keep it??
i already made arrangements to return to seller and get an actual GN and stay on track.
The planned sale was going to do several things Get rid of my engine and generate a little bit of money for my turbo LS project.
Keeping it adds a second project to an already microscopic budget.
But how the fuck do i pass up on such a rare car??
-
They were beautiful cars. It's a shame that some idiot butchered it.
-
I would much rather have a nice WH1 than a run of the mill GN.
I plan on painting my GN pepper gray metallic.. GN's are the Mustangs/Camaros of the TR lineup.
You could probably get an interior relatively cheap.
*I* would put it back towards a WH1, at least the paint, but I am an idiot and choose poorly with TRs. ;)

Here'sthe RPO list Eric Fisher put up a few years back.
turbofish38
05-31-2004, 04:46 PM Service Parts Indentifaction Label (SPID) and Regular Production Order (RPO) Codes
Starting with the 1984 model year GM began implementing the SPID label program which intailed using an information label listing all of the options and equipment to help technicians service GM vehicles. They not only included the RPO codes but also paint and trim codes along with such information as spring and sometimes sub assembly codes. There were several different labels used through out the four years that the TR was built. The labels used for 1984, 1985 and partially through 1986 was a white label indentified by part number 14065987 in the lower right corner. These labels also have a protective clear tape over them. Cars built for the Canadian market utilized this same basic label but with a French language description on the lower half with the part number 14065989 in the lower right. Part way through 1986 and for the model year 1987 the label was changed and has the part number 14085266 in the lower right corner and the protective clear tape was not used. Information on 1987 Canadian market cars is not available at this time.

General Motors G Body platform models where assembled in several plants. They are repesented by the eleventh character of the VIN and by a three letter RPO code. These are the most common assembly plants for G-bodies built after 1982.

Turbocharged Buick Regals where exclusive to the Pontaic MI assembly line for 1986 and 1987. 1984 and 1985 turbocharged Regals were built on both the Flint MI and Pontiac MI assembly line. 1986 and 1987 Pontiac assembled G-bodies also display the code FFL because the main body units were assembled in Flint and shipped over to Pontaic for final assembly. As a side note some non PON and FFL cars also have the FFL code although it is unknown why. All GM vehicles assembled in GM owned assembly plants also have the GMD code.
The Suspension spring codes are also listed on the label. All four springs have their own seperate codes. They are as follows. The code starting with the number 6 is the left front. The number 7 is the right front. The number 8 is the left rear and the number 9 is the right rear. They will be one of these four numbers followed by a two charactor code. All springs were matched depending on the suspension level and type of options and standard equipment installed on the vehicle. By matching the code to a corresponding chart in the parts catalog the correct replacement spring could be ordered. At one time there was a large selection of springs to chose from but over the years GM has replaced most of them with a common part number to cut down on their inventory stock. There was also a tag taped to the spring with a matching code and part number. The following list will have the spring code and part number with the highest rate listed at the top with the lowest at the bottom. These are for the years 1985 to 1987 with RPO FE3 suspension.

Interior trim codes are indentified on the label and they always start with two numbers. The first two numbers are the basic color and the third will denote what part of the car the trim code is for. For example on a GN the code 82I means medium gray basic interior color with the I standing for Interior and the code 82C which is for the seat color and material type.

Any other codes on the label are to be considered internal assembly plant codes and have no importence.
Exterior trim codes are indentified on the label and always start with two numbers. The first two numbers are the basic color and the third will denote what part of the car the trim code is for.
Codes ending with the letter U is the UPPER exterior paint code and the primary paint code if it is a monotone or single color

thanks Ed.
let my homework begin
-
its so easy to swap vin tags, swap bodies, swap frames, swap drive trains, swap interiors, etc... between all the 2 door 81-87 buick regals and turbo cars...that you really need to know what to look for and a reputable source of the car in question :(

Some one else just told me the same thing, i am having one person come look at it today and he thinks he may know the car and some of its history.
I am also going to ask another person to come look at it.
Cant go wrong with extra eyes on it.
Ill post up their findings.

on the bumpers- since it doesn't say that they are painted blk, Does it mean that they are plain chrome?

A black bumpered car would be a WE4 ( I think?)

Returned to seller this Saturday.
Back to looking at for an actual GN or "T" NOT IN BLACK
-
Good move!

Good move!
the "totaled" in 98 was the final push.
-
yeah....there was more poke than pig in that deal...I am the poster boy for buying old cars to fix up that end up costing twice what one in good condition would have cost....boy might be stretching the point a bit

Definitely the best thing you can do! Was this a dealer? I'm surprised he took it back, but that is good news for you.

Not an official dealer but definitely a TR Buick parts guy.
He did the right thing with ZERO complaints or BS.
The car was sold to me as something that it wasn't.

Good luck finding your "right" car. It can be a lot of searching but when you find the right one you will know.
Enjoy the hunt!!

Going to look at one tonight, pretty on the out side with lots of uglyness hidden in the inside

remember what parts cost to fix...it's easy for a 6K car to cost 18K in total and be worth 9-10k

You are right on the money with those numbers, Steve.
-
Yep...put me in the dummy class too...

OK A LITTLE MORE TO THIS ONE.
The guy that i just bought my new car (T-Top car) from told me that the seller of the WH1 the car in this thread contacted him and told him that he had a perfect roller a "WH1".

So much for the "brotherhood" of turbobuick owners...
Sheesh. How do these guys sleep at night?

with da fishes?

its sad really
especially when the guy brags about all the $$$$ he has and does this just for the love of the cars and as a hobby because he doesn't need the money.

Dave if you only knew some of the stuff that has been done over the years you would shutter.
People called liars, people that are liars protected, no apologizes from the ones saying so and causing grief for the innocent. Then there are the outright crooks that have been chastised etc and continue on like nothing.
Now having said all this there are a lot of truly fantastic and great people in the Buick community that will help you as much as they can or know. I will say I have met some of the nicest people that I ever met within the Buick community ! These people are from all sorts of walks from Layman to Scholars. I have been wowed only a few times in my adult life, I will say it has been during the time I have spent at numerous Buick Events. People are what they are I learned that a long time ago, we can not fix them as hard as we try. Hence enjoy the part of the hobby/profession you like and make it better.

There's no "brotherhood", look at the scavengers that buy them just t terar them up and sell them.
I don't give a shit, personally - they are just cars.
Jay C has told me some stories, about even well regarded members, that would make your hair curl.

I want to disagree with you on the no "brotherhood" there is just not as great as it used to be. Look at the motley crew here . . .
Look at it this way, everyone that gets ripped apart or trashed is one less left out there. Will make even the bad ones worth something.
I know a of a number of scenario's that I seen first hand. A few of them friends . . . One has kept me off turbobuick.com by choice (reading or posting).
Enough of this from me. AJ___

For the most part The ones that i have had disagreements with always seem to be the ones in this for the money parts sellers.
Two guys local to me and one guy from NJ. Only lost money once.
The rest of the people that i have met have been great for the most part.
