If the battery was stone dead the ecm may have to re-learn. Put the new battery in and drive it. should be ok after a few miles.

Well that figures...I go out to the garage today to check on the GN after someone got into the daily driver and stole my Magellan.  Go to turn off the alarm and nothing.  The batteries in both remotes were dead and so was the car battery.  Hooked up the battery tender and BAM!  The Viper goes off along with the damn pain generators with the garage door closed.

So how is it that all these die hard GNX owners that say they're cars are all 100% original still using the OEM battery that came with the car?

You think they have 24 year old batteries?

I wouldn't think they would, but if you look at some of the ads on ebay or tb.com for a GNX they'll usually make a comment about how the OEM tires are still on the car as well as the OEM battery (or that they have the OEM battery in some kind of sealed container).

Well, using that logic, they would have to have the factory oil fill, and air in the tires. I think allowances are given for certain items.

I am sure the battery is just old and tired.  When a battery is in doubt and discharging, you can disconnect one side and then see if it still discharges.

Your code 34 might have been from the chip losing its settings due to the bad battery...or it may not have been.  Fix the battery problem and then see what happens.  Electrical stuff gets strange sometimes

I had the alternator tested and they told me it was bad. Replaced both, took it for a spin and all is well.

Just stupid to steal, those things are worth so little new nowadays...

That's what the policeman said to when I filed my report.  He said none of the local pawn shops will take them anymore because they get so many.

Odd thing was that they didn't touch anything else or toss the interior looking for valuables.  The kenwood deck was worth 5X the GPS, and my sunglasses are probably worth 2X the GPS.  What I did think was funny is that I use a Bracketron A/C vent mount kit and they must have broke it trying to get it out because bits and pieces of it were lying about in the car.  They went into the glove box and fold the W/S suction cup mount but left it on the seat.

I musta been thinking really slow before I replied.

Next time you replace an alternator, use the 94-96 Impala alternator which is the second generation of ours..puts out quite a bit more than ours. :)
