Timing question - Caddy
« on: January 16 2011, 02:32:38 PM »
Still tweaking.worki ng on the Cadillac.

This is a 92 Eldorado - 4.9l V8.

I have never checked the timing, so I decided it was time. (pun intended)

The factory service manual gave the procedure - sort out pins A&B in the ALDL connector - remove intake horn, exposing throttle bodies.

Once the pins are shorted on the ALDL - the dash reports "TIMING MODE". Cool!

Fired it up, and the timing was ~ 12.5 degrees - the label on the radiator support says it should be 10 degrees.
I loosened the distributor, adjusted it to 10 degrees, all is good.

I drove it after wards, and it seems a bit sluggish. Is this to be expected? Should I put it BACK to ~12 degrees for more pep?

Did you remove your jumper at the ALDL?

Yes. I made sure to do that. If not it stays at base timing = bad.

I assume you have over 100K miles. Worn Timing chain, dist and timing gears will run better will a little more timing to make-up the wear.  If it ran fine with no detonation before put it back.  Go buy a clay bar and wax if your bored

You make less power with knock. Try it at 11 degs then 12 deg then 13 deg with the same fuel you usually use.  See what works best. Also remember they blow head gaskets like our Buicks with knock. don't get crazy.
