General Buick Tech / Looking at tuning and ECU upgrades
« on: November 08 2020, 03:16:48 AM »
Hey all. Me again. Lol

Looking into ECU upgrades. I want to be able to do my own tuning. These are a few available options out there. FAST, MS3 Pro, ecu-GN from turbotweak, etc... what is the best overall choice for my basically stock w alky and injectors GN? I guess price is always a factor but I will spend more to have the unit that works best. I would prefer to be able to use Bluetooth and tablet to log into it and make changes (on the fly if possible) and also be able to have it display real time data on screen with customizable guages like torque pro does in my Regal GS Supercharged.  Is there such a unit that will plug into the GN and somehow also then plug into my GS and tune it Also? I guess that would be tough to do as a stand alone ecu but is there such an option? Or would i be best buying one for this car and then another option for my ODB2 fleet? So guessing separate systems for each... what's my best bang for buck option? My future upgrades are going to be mild. Injectors, maybe just a newer gen turbo, and that's about it. Not gonna go crazy. Want to keep things mainly stockish on the GN. Thanks for the help so far... gonna do some cosmetic maintenance, little bit of drivetrain maintenance and tuning upgrades over the winter to be fresh for spring.

Hope no one minds me asking so many questions. But I like to post my experiences just to document them for anyone else that may have the same questions.
So this is where I'm at... time to do tranny filter and fluid change. I heard it was best to leave a good amount of your trans fluid so it doesn't shock the system and cause problems with it being too clean and decided on this https://lucasoil.com/products/transmission/2012-11-05-17-14-3 and also grabbed a bottle of this https://lucasoil.com/products/problem-solvers-utility/lucas-oil-automatic-transmission-fluid-conditioner as a preventative measure additive. Any thoughts on this product or have a better alternative?

I picked up the Fram filter and gasket kit ###### as that was what was available not a huge Fram fan but it will do. Came with the trans pan gasket so I dont have to order it separately. Should be fine.

I'm gonna put the oil change bucket under the trans pan and line around it with cardboard and newspaper in case there is any splash or spill any tips or tricks on doing it? Should be straightforwar d.

Will be probably doing it within the next day or two.

Hey again lol...

I'm onto making sure all my vacuum lines are correct and functional. Is there anywhere or anyone have a comprehensive vacuum diagram for all the vacuum lines including the turbo and wastegate and have the specs on how big the vacuum lines are supposed to be? I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find a suitable one. I found one for the ac and heater lines but not any for the engine vacuum lines. Am I missing it somewhere? I want to make sure all my lines and checks valves and anything else related to the vacuum is good. Can someone point me in the right direction for such info please? I seriously can't find any solid references for this. Thx.

Hey all ,

Always used R43TS plugs on my car but I now have Alky system. Is the R43TS still my best choice? The guys at my local parts store says that they show the R44TS as the listed plug for the 3.8 Turbo. I always used the R43TS plugs so I told him that's what I want. Doing a comprehensive search about spark plugs online and here just mainly opened up more confusion because there are so many options and opinions but no real solid tests or evidence supporting the results. Just peoples butt dyno saying one is better than the other.

I have used iridiums in the regal GS Supercharged and Reatta with so far good results. How do they work with our engines and boost levels?

Last of all... I noticed that I got 2 different manufactured ACDelco R43TS plugs... ones made in the US and ones made in China. They look similar however there is some substantial differences in the plugs and it got me wondering what the differences actually are between the two. I asked the guy at the parts store (on the phone) if they had any other US made ones in stock because I explained to him that they were slightly different and he said that they should be manufactured to the same specs and shouldnt be a difference and "in the 25 years I have been doing this i haven't had to warranty a ACDelco plug due to manufacturers defects..." well... maybe because the previous ACDelco units were made in the US and the new ones are a product of China. Who knows. In my opinion looking closely at them side by side the US ones looked to be make of better metals as they had a more solid and copper look to them unlike the Chins built ones looked a bit less quality in the materials. Hard to explain but I did see s difference. Maybe before I put them in I will bring them back to them and ask the guy before I say anything to look at these two identical plugs and tell me what you see andnyournopuni om of which he thinks is a better plug just based on appearance. See what he says before i point out what the difference is. Has anyone compared between the two? Should I ask other locations if they have any if the US stock to send me them and return the China units? I have 2 US and 4 China. Would it hurt to mix them?

Just wondering.

Hey all...

So i fixed the fuel pressure but I think my ignition pack or ecm may be fried. When I was removing the FPR during troubleshootin g, I accidentally touched the ratchet to the alternator battery terminal and shorted something fierce.

I had to replace one of the fuses I believe was the bottommost one for the ignition. Do you think that somehow I fried something in the ignition? That being said... I read about upgrading or changing to a type II ignition like found on later model 3.8 or the 3800 style ignition. What is the word on that? I literally have a metric tonne of them because I have a Reatta and a Regal GS supercharged that uses those modules and I have replaced and changed them on multiple occasions for myself and friends and have a  stockpile of spares. I tried to plug one of the 3800 modules into the GN harness and although it has the same basic layout and number of pins, it will not quite fit properly as it is notched differently. If i were to rewire or splice or adapt the wiring harness to accept the newer style ignition module and plate which uses the new coils... is this a solution? I read that people had mixed and inconsistent results with them, but when they work usually the idle is better and smooths things out a bit. Is it worth a try? Im interested how it will go on my car. Any thoughts here?

Another possibility is that my ecm is shot. I tried switching the chips out and no luck. It is also possible that i may have a loose connection on the wiring harness of it too. I remember that being a problem a long time ago when I drove it regularly the engine would sometimes cut out if the ecm was bumped. I tried jiggling, twisting, pushing, pulling, cleaning the contacts of both the harness and chips but still the car won't start.  The scanmaster shows all the correct screens when you cycle through the settings except of course for the main o2 mv where it just displays dashes and the little for because the car isnt running yet so no data from the o2. So i think the ecm is giving out a signal and somewhat functional but is it sending out a signal to the ignition? Is there a way to probe the outputs with a multimeter to see if it's alive and doing what it Is supposed to? I can see if a local buddy of mine has a spare (good chance he does) and try swapping it out. But i will try a few things first if possible.

Lastly just a thought... cam/crank position sensor? I remember having to replace that a while ago. Maybe i will check that too???

Sorry for the long winded post but i wanted to relay all the info I had so it will help point out where I have been and done so far. Any help or guidance on any point will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hey everyone...

Finally got the 86 back on the road again and was driving beautifully however when I went to park it the other day, put the car into reverse...died ...and hasn't started since. Checked for fuel pressure at the rail and nothing. There is fuel flow and i hear my fuel pump going when I jumper the grey wire in the engine bay... but there is no pressure. I have an accufab FPR and it seems to be ok. I took it apart and looked at it and the diaphragm is fine. I even replaced it with a Bosch unit I had lying around which was not from a GN but some other car (Mercedes or BMW I think i recall but it fit exactly) and it seemed to not make a difference. Still no pressure. Replaced the fuel filter still same. So my thoughts now is to drop the tank and see if the fuel pump is somehow leaking back into the tank. Is this possible? Is there anything else I should check before doing that? I recall there being a walbro pump (not sure which one but it is about 10 yrs old) installed. I hear it whirring away In the tank but if the fuel pump to the gas line hose or whatever has some sort of breach I think this would be the result. The car is on the street parked so i will be doing it there. I used the pump as is to drain the tank into gas cans, but if i put my thumb over the connected tube I can stop the flow like nothing. No pressure. Fuel pump is hot wired also.  Thoughts? Thx in advance...
