Turbo Blankets-Advantages?
« on: June 18 2017, 09:40:17 AM »
What I'm most interested in is if a blanket will quicken spool time. We have a new starter...and he isn't dicking around. He drops the lights immediately. PL is showing 3 seconds from when I get on the gas to launch with the convertor flashing to 3 grand...which is a low 1.8 launch. Low gear fueling is 780 with an extra 4 degrees of low gear timing. Will a turbo blanket quicken the spool time? Any real world data?

The class I run is as competitive as it gets. These guys know I have to spool...and will dick around if I roll in first...and I can't afford to overheat a transmission. I have no choice but to let them fully stage before I crank it up.

Best blanket money can buy...and size?

Here's what I'm using on an internally gated precision .63 turbine housing.  Fits great with no interference of the waste gate arm.

Lite the 1st blub, get on the brake and start building boost - and it should move enough to trip the 2nd bulb. You'll have to figure out what the car likes.

Jeremy, I went and read the rule book for our track...and let's see if it happens on Friday at practice. Both cars must prestage. When the first car is fully staged, auto start counts down from 7...and the tree is activated. I'm gonna roll in first...and stage first. Let's see if the tree activates in 7 seconds.

I would say the blanket makes no measurable difference

A lot of broken parts does not make you a racer; it makes you a slow learner.

I'd agree with the old fart.

Now a 2 step is another matter.

Light the first bulb.  Ease it up and light the second one and then just put it on the floor.

I would say you're probably right!  My boss at work is on the blanket kick, this is for steam.  It does lower outside temperatures but since they were put on I've seen gaskets being blown, fried wires on controllers.  Some things just don't need to be covered up.

If my local speed shop can get me one from DEI...then we're gonna test it. I don't like the stock cover anyway. Sniffed around Google, and I couldn't find a before or after test. Only thing allowed in my class is a transbrake.

I'd be reluctant to run a blanket due to the little gains like Steve said. Also the chance of oil 'coking' would greatly increase without the oil cooler in place......... JMO, take it for what it is. They do look cool though.

The science is sound.   The only reasons turbos work is because hot gas is bigger than less hot gas.

In the real world I can't imagine it would matter.  Much like if you knocked 10#'s off the nose of the car. Science says that you'll be faster, get better mileage, better balance and more traction....

Ordered a DEI. Since no one's tested this, I may as well be the first.
