General Buick Tech / AEM Digital Guages
« on: January 19 2013, 09:41:28 AM »
I'm thinking about getting an AEM digital voltage gauge and possibly their digital fuel pressure gauge, but thought I'd check here first.  Steve, you have the voltage gauge right?  Would you recommend it?

Anyone using the AEM digital fp gauge?

General Buick Tech / Is My '87 GN Alternator Too Small?
« on: January 04 2013, 11:56:42 AM »
I recently discovered that the alternator on my 87 GN is a 96 amp unit rather than the 120 amp unit that was there before the Buick dealer replaced it.  This was done in 2001 but I just discovered it while cleaning the engine compartment.  It seems to be working fine but ...

Should I replace it with the proper 120A version?  Will the 96A alternator negatively affect performance in any way or am I ok as long as I don't install a mega-watt stereo?

I'm thinking that Buick used the 120A for a reason but I don't know what it was.

Oh, and my male ego would appreciate it if you would keep this quiet.  I don't want the general public to know that I have a tiny alternator.   :icon_redface:  Thank you.

General Buick Tech / Testing for proper AE fuel
« on: November 09 2012, 02:22:27 PM »
I was wondering if you folks (being much smarter than me) could help me with a good way to test Acceleration Enrichment (AE).  I've changed the AE values in the chip several times and don't seem to notice a difference.  I'm referring to the AE fuel based on change in throttle position.

I understand the goal is for throttle response with no lag but beyond that is there anything I should  be looking for?

General Buick Tech / Fuel pressure or lack thereof
« on: September 06 2012, 04:59:53 PM »
So I finally get around to connecting my fuel pressure gauge to PowerLogger and notice the pressure is not increasing with boost.  So I change the fuel filter which needed changing anyway.  It doesn't fix the problem.  So I order a rebuild kit for my Accufab adjustable regulator.  While waiting for that, I replace it with my old Bosch 237 reg that has the top pushed down for 45 psi (line off).  I logged everything during a very short run and still the fuel pressure during boost (and my AFR) are crap.  So, I have two questions ...
1- Does the above point to a bad fuel pump?  Its a Walbro 834 that is 3-yrs old with 300 miles on it.
2- The Buick fuel pressure troubleshootin g chart says that if I crush the fuel return line I should get 75 psi.  Is back by the tank the only place to get to a rubber hose on the return line?
3- OK three questions, I would like to prove that the pump is bad before I drop the tank.  Is there a way to do this, or have I already done it?

I can post a screen snap-shot of the PL data if anyone wants to see boost vs f/p.

Thanks,
Dennis

General Buick Tech / Fuel line O-rings
« on: August 28 2012, 10:54:35 AM »
While changing my fuel filter I noticed the o-rings on the hard lines looked funky.  They are the original ones from 1987.  I left them alone and put in the new filter, but now I'm not sure that was the right thing to do.  Its not leaking, but I can only check with static fuel pressure.  At 60 lbs it might be a different story.

So my questions are:
1- How important are these two o-rings?
2- If they are critical, where can I get new ones?
3- The new filter is a Fram G3727 that I've had on the shelf for at least 5 years.  Is there a better filter that I should be using?

Thanks,
Dennis
