General Buick Tech / T-Bolt Clamps
« on: May 07 2018, 02:23:06 PM »
I went down a rabbit hole with t-bolt clamps...

Is any brand really better than any other?

Most of the sites say to measure inside diameter of the pipe to determine size, but when I read reviews people say that got them all screwed up and got the wrong sizes.

What's a good range of different sizes to have on hand?

General Buick Tech / Off Center vs On Center block pros/cons
« on: May 05 2018, 05:13:31 PM »
Would like to get a fresh perspective on this rather than 10 year old threads on the other forums.

What are the pros/cons of an off center block versus an on center block.

I have an opportunity to purchase some stage 2 off center blocks.

From what I remember, the off center allows you to swap out parts interchangeabl y with a stock 109, cylinder banks were shifted fore/aft, ring seals seal better with an on center, on center can see upwards of 1500HP while an off center is around 1200HP, and on center parts are crazy expensive compared to off center.

But that's about all I remember.

I'm not looking for that kind of HP.  But I am interested if getting these blocks would be worth considering and aside from power, what's the benefit?  Other than being able to gloat you have a stage 2 motor.

IHADAV8 Playground / Annual Check In
« on: April 18 2018, 12:50:55 PM »
I had to find a pic of something I took awhile back and wound up back here...so thought I'd at least check in.  Been avoiding forums and just using FB mostly for Buick stuff.  The Buick Grand National Tech FB page is actually pretty good...some of the others, not so much.

Anyways, the Buick is still running...lol, it only took 3 different motor builders to finally get one that would not eat itself.

Just put on a new 6262 and Cold Case radiator.

I don't OCD over it as much as I used to, more worried about functionality and longevity than anything else now with it.

Next week should be exciting, meeting up with about 5 or 6 other TR owners in Panama City and Hartline is coming up for dyno/tuning of our XFI.  Knock on wood my car doesn't destroy itself on the dyno.

I got married.

Still live in Fairhope, AL.

And I actually have some people nearby that own GNs now for when I do break something and need help.

Just want to make sure I'm buying the right stuff.  I'm trying to get it done this week, so it's either Amazon 2 day delivery or try to buy them locally.

What is the correct part number for the AC Compressor Cutoff Switch?  The one that's on the compressor itself.  Trying to find it on Amazon.

What is the correct part number for the blue Ford orifice?  Again, trying to find it on Amazon.

A/C, Heating and Cooling / AC Compressor
« on: June 11 2017, 07:23:13 PM »
So, last night...I went to use the AC for the first time since last year.

Turn it on and all of a sudden I hear something screeching and smoke pouring out of the hood.

Shut the car off, grab the fire extinguisher, pop the hood...nothing .

Hmm...so I turn off everything, start the car and all is good.  Turn on AC and there it is again.

It almost looked like it was arcing out of the compressor.

Time for a new one.

I'm told I can get a compressor and dryer at any auto parts store but that I should also get an orifice for a 95 Ford F150 V8.

General Buick Tech / MAL codes with FAST XFI are different?
« on: June 11 2017, 06:10:46 PM »
I was at a car event last night and when I started the car, it stumbled and died.  I didn't turn the key off, I just started it again and I had a check engine light with a code 22.  I went to my mal card and it said TPS Low Signal Voltage.  Readings seemed normal though.

Got home, shutoff car, went to do some research...cam e back, started car and no mal code or check engine light.

Then this morning, I check the Scanmaster 3 manual and the codes are different?  It says a code 22 is ATS Bias error.

http://www.turbobuick.com/threads/scanmaster-3-manual.439091/

Is that right?  What does that mean?

I don't even see that type of mal code in the original system:

General Auto Tech / 70's Corvettes Forums
« on: November 24 2015, 03:48:38 PM »
Is there a decent Corvette forum for '70s Corvettes?

Is there a Steve Wood for Corvettes out there somewhere?

My Dad's '74 Vette is going to be living here for awhile while the GN is being renovated...

IHADAV8 Playground / Cruising the Coast and Steve helped save the day
« on: October 12 2015, 03:21:40 PM »
So, I went to Cruising the Coast on Saturday to meet up with some other Turbo Regal owners.  A friend of mine had recently relocated there so we met up at his place and there were about 7 others that showed up as well.  Great time, and got to meet some awesome folks.  Went for a ride in a 9 second stage 2 car and almost snapped my neck...wow, that thing really pulled.

And Steve saved my butt from having to spend all day researching the forums...

Just as I'm nearing the exit my fiancé calls and asks me how the car is running.  She knew that I had been chasing some bugs and had installed a new alternator, pulley for the tensioner, and a new belt.  No sooner had I said that she was running great, the dummy light for the voltage illuminated and the scanmaster showed a drop from 15V to 11V.  And there was a very noticeable whine.  I was only a few miles away from where I needed to meet everyone and made it with no problem.  One of the guys had an alternator that he had just changed out and offered it to me to use but we weren't 100% it would make the trip home so we decided to look around first at the auto parts stores...and given that this was Cruising the Coast and there were 1,000s of cars in town I was not feeling lucky they'd have one.  And of course they didn't...but then I remembered some threads about how an alternator from a '95-'96 Impala would fit, got in touch with Steve via FB messenger to confirm.  Thanks Steve.  It bolted right in except for the bolt on the rear near the valve cover and the stud/pole is a bit bigger so we had to do a little filing on the connections to widen 'em up.  The guys there were awesome and had it changed out in minutes.  I had bought the alternator that failed from Kirbans and I spoke with him today and it's warrantied so I'll probably put that one in and keep the Impala alternator as a backup.

My father found it for me out in CA at a swap meet.  Guy was asking $6500 but wound up with it at $4500.

Far from stock...not even close, but it is very clean.  I have no intention of getting it back to stock or putting it in purist form, just going to drive the crap out of it and have some fun in the process.

I don't know anything about it, no idea what the history is, what's in the motor...etc.

The motor appears to have been freshened up and it feels/sounds like it has a bigger cam in it.  Runs great.  Odometer says 50K...no idea if that is 150K, 250K, or 350K, lol.  Underneath is solid, and I can't find any corrosion on the frame anywhere.  The only bit of rust I did find was on the passenger side in the door opening, but it looks like someone did a half ass repair attempt on it.  It was repainted god knows when.  I'm thinking at least 8, maybe 10 years.  I need to see about getting that color matched so I can get some touch up paint for it as there are a couple of pretty big chips and a few nicks here and there.  When they repainted it, they did not fill in the holes for the lower body molding.  And there is a hole on the driver side bed where at some point someone had installed an auxiliary fuel tank.  If I can, I'd rather just fill/seal that hole with a fake gas cap or something.  Wasn't a stock option.  According to the RPO it was originally white with green interior.  Still has the green steering wheel shaft, I'll see about getting that out and spray painting it black.

It had a bunch of goofy decals and skull accessories on it.  Someone went a little nuts with the skull accessories from Advanced Auto (skull rear view mirror, skull valve stem covers, skull door lock stems, etc.).  Took all that junk off along with the weird decals.

Upcoming projects:
I have a gallon of bed liner coating, so I'll put that on soon.
Shocks (they're shot)
Brakes (drums all around...might see about putting discs up front)
Lock for that tool/storage box
Glove box liner
Dome light (no lense or bulb)
Seat belts (someone took out the original seat belts and installed some aftermarket ones, but instead of sewing them at the bottom to hold it together they wrapped a zip tie around it).
Lower body molding (I really don't want anything, but I don't like the idea of those holes being there...and I really don't want that stock molding it came with either.  I'm thinking just a thin solid strip of chrome)
Pedals (they put on Advance Auto tuner style pedals...those have to go)
Hood (something is missing, a brace, or support, something...wh en you close it, you have to be very careful and lower it slowly, then go back to each corner near the firewall and press it down into place before you latch down the front)

General Buick Tech / Seat Belts
« on: March 26 2015, 12:35:25 PM »
My passenger front and rear seat belts don't retract very well anymore.  The webbing is in excellent shape, so i don't need to replace the webbing.

Is there someplace in particular you have used to have retraction device(s) refurbished?

How hard is it to remove the seat belts and the retractable devices from the car?  Do i need special tools?

General Buick Tech / Installing a turbo for dummies
« on: March 10 2015, 10:23:34 PM »
So, I need to put the turbo back on now that I have it back from PTE.  Taking it off was easy.  I have a feeling putting it back on won't be as easy.

So, now what?

IHADAV8 Playground / And vendor drama goes full retard
« on: January 12 2015, 12:34:52 AM »
Wow...the turbo regal community on Facebook is having a field day right now with what's going on with one of the vendors and the court of public opinion has already hung him, and with everything that's out there for folks to see how can they not.    Like they say, Karma is a bitch.

"Call the FBI", BGC, Poston's...the Pantheon of Turbo Regal drama gets another chapter.

I found these tuning tips from ATR and KB last night going though my binders that I keep all my TR literature in.

Thought I'd share for nostalgia...

General Auto Tech / What to put a 383 stroker in?
« on: November 08 2014, 02:40:19 PM »
So, we have this brand new 383 stroker sitting around...what should we put it in?

We want an economy project, something simple...somet hing that if we need to order a part we don't have to hire a PI to find it.

I was thinking a 70's Nova?  They seem to be plentiful and cheap, lots of aftermarket parts, etc.

I just need a roller.

Ideas?
