Spent this last week up in Vernon, Texas, doing some flight training, working on some airplane ratings and attending Summer's Last Blast. SLB is a cruise/car show/ swap meet/ burn out contest/ concert all jammed into 2 days.
Anyway, found this little gem at the airport and talked the owner out of it. Had to leave GG at the airport until next weekend. Steve you may know of the Wagoner ranch. This vehicle belonged to its owner Bucky Wharton.
1982 Wagoneer
2 barrel 360
61000 original miles
This model does not have the quadra trac
It will need going through. Spent most of its life in Colorado only brought back to Texas a few years ago to sit inside an airplane hanger.
-
You're a very lucky man my friend. I just happen to have a 2 door cherokee chief that you can use for parts if you need them. The only thing that's missing is the title, which I can get, and the rear hatch and glass. It even has the quadra track with low gear if you want to convert it.
-
I'll bite...what`s Quadra Track. :)
-
I'll keep that in mind Charlie. I've heard good and bad about the quadra trac. We got it running, driving and stopping before coming back home. Going to start with the safety stuff first and get it reliable then go for the pretty stuff and some paint. Here's a shot at the house...
-
Cool!
-
I like it! My uncle had one was a great little truck.
-
I'll bite...what`s Quadra Track. :)
Quadra-Trac was the trade name for the Borg-Warner (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg-Warner) 1305 and 1339 gear case. It was a chain-drive system introduced in 1973 on the full-sized Jeep line which included the Wagoneer, Cherokee, and trucks behind the AMC-specific Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. CJ7s also received the Quadra-trac. This system included a differential to shift torque between front and rear which could be locked with vacuum. The Borg-Warner 1305 offered only 4WD Hi modes in full-time or part-time (locked) modes, while the 1339 offered a full-time and part-time low range of 2.57.
The Jeep Quadra-Trac was differentiated from the open "New Process" Gear NP203 used by Dodge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge), General Motors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_Corporation), and Ford (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Motor_Company) in that it included a center limited slip differential feature, in this case a clutch pack.
-
To make it simpler, it was a full time 4 wd system that could differentiate lack of traction and put the traction where it was needed. It used a special fluid that worked like a viscous coupling.
-
It looks good!
-
Thanks for the explanation. How well does it work...and how durable is it?
-
Thanks for the explanation. How well does it work...and how durable is it?
As long as it's properly maintained with the correct fluid, it works fine. If you miss the service intervals or use the wrong fluid, you're screwed.
-
That's pretty cool, I would have thought it was older than that...don't know anything about jeeps.
-
Update on the Wagoneer.
My boy has taking a hankering to the old jeep. Maybe this will get him off them electronics for a while. We will see...
Overhauled the carb. Installed a re-cored radiator. Flushed the cooling and heating system. Installed a new 180' thermostat. Replaced the valve cover gaskets. Removed all the emissions crap. Plugged the exhaust manifolds where the emissions lines connected. Now I can actually change a spark plug without killing myself. New plugs, wires, rotor, and cap. Replaced all the hoses and belts. Changed the oil and filter in the engine and tranny. Ordered some new Gabriel shocks. Finally got all the trim, glass, exterior door handles, bumpers, brake/tail/parking lights and grill removed. Interior is gutted except for the front bench seat. Needed to be able to move it in and out of the barn. I haven't got to the brakes yet but I ain't ready for the road just yet and they appear to be working just moving it around. Even the e-brake holds.
Finished blasting the exterior and treated the bare metal yesterday morning. Then I dropped it off for paint yesterday afternoon. Did I mention that I hate body work? I rather enjoy the disassembly/assembly part but not the body work. Now on to polishing all the trim.
-
After reading all that, I have to go to bed for a couple of weeks and rest up!
This thing is going to be really nice!

All that didn't happen over night... I'm hoping it will be a nice daily.
You need me to come over and crack the whip?
-
hell, no!
-
Got a kitchen pass for tonight's football game due to the weather. Plus who wants to spend an evening in Robinson. So I started polishing the trim on the Wagoneer. Here's a before and after of the taillight bezels.
-
Man, that is polishing up nice!
-
That is a wild toy!
-
Jason...any chance of getting a few pics as it progresses at the body shop? Paint color? :)
-

Gonna need sunglasses to look at it when he gets all the chrome polished up on it.
-
Jason...any chance of getting a few pics as it progresses at the body shop? Paint color? :)
Body shop is in Waco. I'll try and get by there this week and get some pics. To be honest there won't be much body work. Absolutely no rust and only one small ding near the right rear tail light that they will repair and I asked them to prime, seal and shoot it navy blue metallic. Original color was a baby blue but the original owner had it painted navy blue before it was even delivered to him. It was jammed on that repaint so I didn't want to get into the expense of having it jammed again to get it back to its original color.
I've attached a photo of in progress blasting before I got it done. If you zoom in to the tail light, you can see the original color
-
Hard to see on this image but it's the bottom middle. Sea blue metallic
-
Love the classic Cherokee's! My buddy use to have one.
-
With a light weight aluminum car trailer...it'd make a pretty shnazzy tow vehicle. :)

I like your way of thinking. I was able to pick up another complete Wagoneer for $100 that I'm using for parts. One of the first things on the list is the factory tow hitch that it has along with the roof rack.
-
Managed to stop by and get a few pics today among other life happenings... There were a few spots that they wanted to repair before moving forward. Maybe we'll see some color next week.
-
Good to see the door handles etc removed. It's gonna look nice when done. :) :)
-

I've been working on polishing all the trim. All was removed before blasting. I even pulled all the glass.
-
Looks good, the color should be interesting.
-
Finished the small stuff. Still have to do the grill and the bumpers. Interestingly enough, the bumpers are all aluminum.
-
This is gonna look sharp when completed.
-
Some before, during and after bumper pics. Not a show finish but let me tell you guys something... I ain't polishing anything for a long while
-
Hey I got the same work bench !

Hey I got the same work bench !
Whatever works is how I roll!

Looking good. You are going to have a bunch of time in this good thing there is a market for them if you need to get out of it. Gonna be sweet when you get her done.
Did you have plans for the interior?

I did the same thing when I painted my glass bumper this past summer. Lol!

I've have wanted one of these wagoneers since I first saw one back in 70's. No plans of selling. This one is not one of the plush models and wouldn't bring the money that some of those high end models. As for the interior, will need to recover the front bench seat. The seams have split from the sun and not wear. The back bench seat is in great shape, so nothing there just some cleaning. Will put down some new carpet both front and rear. The dash pad is another story. No one re-pops these and this one is in pretty bad shape from sun damage. I may just leave that for now and drive it. Still need to work the a/c and fix a small tranny fluid leak. Pretty sure that is coming from th dipstick grommet. Also need to go thru the brakes and get some tires. I'm going to blast the wheels and paint them when I get the old tires off. That's pretty much the plan... For now
-
Jason...does anyone sell a dash overlay?
-
Jason...does anyone sell a dash overlay?
Found plenty of overlays for it but it's like shopping for a tonneau cover at jcwhitney. I have no idea what would work or fit best. Another option is to give just dashes a call and see what they would charge to restore my dash. On second thought, I'm going to call Montana overland tomorrow and see where he can steer me for the dash. I did find a Wagoneer place in Richardson but he does restorations only. He gave the info on Montana overland and that's where I got the one piece of trim that was dinged up.
-
Dollars to donuts there's a Wagoneer forum. They'd point you in the right direction for anything you need for it. :)
-
Paint and body guys must've worked the weekend. Says I can pick up tomorrow after work. I'm stoked!
-

Hell yeah!!!!!!
-
Didn't know this...
For 1968 through 1971, Wagoneers were powered by Buick (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick)’ Dauntless (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V8_engine#350) V8. The Dauntless made less horsepower than the previous AMC V8 (230 hp vs. 250), but more torque (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque) at lower rpm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rpm) (350 ft·lbf (475 N·m) at 2400 rpm versus 340 ft·lbf (461 N·m) at 2600).
After the 1971 model year, Wagoneers were exclusively AMC powered
-
Kaiser bought the Buick V6 and used it in jeeps for several years in the CJ and jeepster before GM bought it back in the early 70's because of the gas crisis. Buick also stupidly sold the 215 aluminum V8 to land rover and it was used in land rovers until sometime around 2000.

We've been doing a few dash overlays recently, I hate em. I'm doing a 73 RoadRunner that's stressing me out. We just finished a 93 Dakota that finished nicely. Where it fits near the windshield though, I wanted to use studs for the original dash and to bolt the overlay but couldn't find any. After I finished I found what I could've used at the hardware store. So, now I know!!!!
-
I saw a picture today of a Wagoneer where the guy just removed the dash pad. Didn't look bad but I would have to find something to fill the holes
-
Picked it up this evening. I am well pleased. Now to putting it back together
-
A few inside the barn with some light. It was late this evening it's been cloudy most of the day.
-
I do have 1 thing you might want Jason. How about a set of factory wagon wheels that are 8" wide? :D
-
Wow looks great love color.

Send me a pic Charlie. The parts Wagoneer has some aluminum wheels but they have brown accents painted on the sides of the spokes and would need some attention. My plan was to blast these steelie's, paint them and put the hubcaps back on unless I like your wheels.
-
Wow looks great love color.
Thanks Larry and Brad
-
Not the best pic but this should give you some idea of what they look like Jason.
-
Thanks for the pics Charlie. I think I'll stay with these wheels for now. I have the hubcaps so I'll have a little bit of shine down there.
-
I like that color too!
-
The right wheels will liven that thing right up. Every piece of trim, the mirrors and all will make a huge difference. Great colour. A "u" for our Canada brethern!!!!

Friend of mine has a shop in Waco. Jeep body was straight with very little rust and I wasn't after a show car finishHe did fix 3 spots that he didn't like and I had not noticed. I did the blasting and metal treatment. He had an opening so I took it in. I didn't expect it back so soon either. Like I said earlier, I am well pleased with the results.
-
Dark Blue looks awesome on everything. Looking good!
-
That looks great!
-
Re-installing all the glass and trim is a pain. New window channel seals and door seals. The vent windows are the biggest PITA!
-
A little progress pics. Still have yet to receive the rear quarter window seals. Ordered them along with the rest of the weatherstrippi ng.
-
coming along nicely
-
Update. Rear quarter windows are in and thanks to Charlie I have finished all the door windows as well. Pulled the old tires off the stock rims. Blasted and painted the rims and had new rubber installed this morning. Pulled the rotor hubs and drums. Had the braking surfaces cleaned up and then cleaned and packed the front bearings as well as new inner seals. Waiting on rock auto to deliver the pads, shoes and new rubber hoses, then I can bleed the system. UPS man dropped off the interior carpet from ACC. Going to tackle that this long weekend.
-
Damn, I'm liking this project. :)
-
Sweet!
-
Looks great Jason. Don't you take a nap or something sometime?
-

I'll rest when I'm dead. I do nap at lunch while at work but who doesn't?
Didn't get much done tonight. Pulled the front seat and the rest of the old carpet. Man that blast media gets every where! I did install the tail gate piece and I'm having a hard time believing that's the original color... Oh well... It will have to grow on me because I ain't shipping this back. Now to cleaning the rest of the inside
-
A side shot of the painted rims and new tires on it?
-

As soon as I get the brakes buttoned up
-
Carpet and interior panels are in. Waiting on the new seat belts to arrive to install the rear seat. Got the new pads and shoes installed yesterday. Still waiting on the rubber hoses for the brakes...
-
I'm liking it!
-
Mail man delivered the brake hoses this afternoon. Got those installed and bled the brakes. Now I'm waiting for seat belts to be street legal. Here's a side shot for Brad with the new rubber, painted wheels and polished hub cabs. Don't mind the mess.
-
A plus buddy!
-
Nice work Jason!
-
Appreciate the compliments fellas
-
Shop looks nice too!
-
Great work. Making me feel bad about my lack of project progress. But, I prefer baby cuddles to wrenchin'... odd... I know.

I like that stuff too but with 2 teenagers, I'll cuddle with jeep right now. Sure does make me hopeful for some grand babies in the future
-
Had a beautiful afternoon so I washed GG and the Wagoneer. Need to come up with a name for it... Anyway, cleaned up and painted the grill guard that I got from Charlie and it fit like a glove. Also installed the receiver hitch from the parts jeep. Seat belts still haven't been delivered, so I managed to piece one set for the driver. I'm hoping to get an inspection and registration this week so I can start road testing.
-
Turned out great, enjoy!
-
Got the inspection and registration today. I ran out of qualifying military plates, so I went with a farm truck plate. Drove me and the wife around this afternoon and she was taken back to her childhood. Her grandpa always had one of these wagoneers at his place in the foothills of the Rockies in New Mexico. Anyway, I think she likes it. Going to give it a good test and drive it to work tomorrow. Thanks for all the kind words during this mini restoration/overhaul. Now back to the barn motor!
-
Looks great! I'd put some small mudflaps on it to protect the paint...just my 2 cents. :)
-
Glad the parts work for you Jason. When you decide to get rid of the AMC engine and go GM, remember I've got everything but the motor mounts for you.
-
LC2 is an AMC motor, isn't it?
-
The original design came out in 1962 from Buick and advertised as the Fireball. It was sold to jeep in 1967. Energy crisis in the 70's led to the buy back from AMC in 1977.
-
It was actually bought back in 74 and the bore increased to 3.8". Because of vibration issues related to the original odd fire design it was revamped late 76 early 77 and made into an even fire design. First even fire was used in 77.5 model year and the heads were redesigned in early/mid 78 and the high port dead design was used first in 79. Further change in the heads (stage I design) came from bridging the water passages on the ends of the heads, and to hopefully solve some oiling issues, the block was re-designed in late 84 (85 block) and again in 85 (109 casting).
-
Nice job! Always cool when you see an older vehicle on the road.
-
Developed an oil leak from the timing cover. Cleaned it up, replaced the balancer seal. Still leaking. Cleaned again, fired it up and watched the leak develop just above the oil pan in front of the brass T for the oil pressure switch and guage and the timing cover.
Pulled the timing cover.... It's a bigger version of a turbo buick timing cover. Amazing similiarities between the AMC 360 and the Buick 3.8. Well looks like the gasket blew out on the upper hole which would be the pressure side.
It's apart... New timing chain going in as well as a new oil pan gasket.
-
New timing chain installed and got a timing cover from Charlie as I broke a bolt off in the timing cover when removing the oil pump housing. Got a mid-plate for the pump as well as new gears. Primed the pump and got it all back together to find that I nicked one of the tubes on the radiator with the fan studs when I pulled it off with the timing cover. Found that when I was filling the radiator up. So the radiator is out and at the radiator shop to be soldered. On the bright side of things, oil pressure is up and no oil leaks.
-
That thing is gonna be a towing beast. Well not like the diesel pickup but way more cool imo.
-
*like*
-
*Like* is not an appropriate comment. It is simply a four letter word and two asterisks that signifies that you don't care enough to dignify the OP's words appropriately. It's just a space filler that is almost obscene in it's lack of appreciation. Kinda like you, in other words.
-
Got the Wagoneer back together yesterday evening. So far so good. Now we'll drive it a bit and see what else happens

Nice time to enjoy the fruits of your labour

Have a lifelong friend over this evening. Had him follow me home in the Wagoneer to tell me what his speedo is reading when mine says 60. He tells me he's doing 68. I believe that's a 12% difference if my math is correct.... I put on some 31-10.50's after refinishing the wheels.... I could presume the original tire was a 27" diameter.
Wonder if I could add 12% to the fuel mileage since I've actually traveled 12% further????
That would give me about 13.6 mpg...... Not too bad but not really that good either
-
When you are having fun with old vehicles, gas mileage isn't usually high on the priority list. It's one of those things that if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it. Even 10 mpg was probably considered decent for a 4x4 suv of the era.
-
Had a packed house in the barn yesterday evening

yeah, mileage is mileage....sou nds like you need a speedometer gear with a few less teeth.
I use my phone with a gps app to check speedometer accuracy. Makes it very simple and very accurate.

Well after a little over 3500 miles, we've developed a leak. The rear output seal on the transfer case and the front seal around the torque converter. Looks like I'll be pulling the tranny... Fun times
-
That's not bad how long did it sit before you got it?
-
The last registration was from 2003
-
Got a tranny jack and an adapter for a regular jack if you want to borrow it Jason.

I may have to borrow that. I'll let you know, been really busy with the kiddos to do much of anything else
-
Either one or both if you want Jazon.
-
Got the tranny and transfer case back from a local shop on Monday evening. Transfer case had a couple of bad bearings. Tranny was just freshened with some new clutches, new seals and a new converter. Got the tranny stabbed Monday evening and the transfer case and all the miscellaneous crap put back in on Tuesday evening. This evening I got all the fluids topped off and double checked my install. Thru the axles up on jacks and ran thru all the gears. Locked the front hubs and checked the transfer case through its ranges. Pulled the stands and went out on the road. Road test complete with no issues so far (knock on wood). I need to adjust the parking brake and recheck the fluid after eating some dinner. Also need to adjust the tv linkage a bit. It's shifting a bit early on the 2-3 shift.
-
Cool has it seen any dirt yet? Lol
-
Cool has it seen any dirt yet? Lol
No dirt yet. We have been talking about a big bend trip this summer. Big national park here in west Texas along the Mexico border with lots of trails. My father in law loves to go there and camp and ride the trails. He has even taken my boy there on his Ural motorcycle that has a side car. They stayed a week camping and living out of the motorcycle. Good memories for my boy with his grandad.
-
I cherish the times I had with my Grandpa he is the one that started me turning wrenches working on his old toyota pickup that was his bush truck.
-
Might look at palo duro canyon as well Jason. There's a 4x4 event there every year for just about any class.

Picked up the seats from the upholster. No more sitting on vinyl for this guy

Nice find! I think the resurgence is exactly what happened to our parents. People are looking to buy cars that they wanted to have back in the day but now they have the money. No plans to put mine up for sale and no plans to rent it out. But if any of you here on the board want to come enjoy the Wagoneer, just come on down and experience it for free.... Well almost free, you'll have to fill up the tank when bringing it back
-
Fill up "the tank" - with hot babes - "when bringing it back". Message received loud and clear.
I have always been good at determining my implied tasks during mission analysis.
-
Wired up the Wagoneer for trailer lights yesterday afternoon. Then took it for a test spin around town. It pulled that car hauler like it wasn't even back there. I may look at getting some bags for the rear just to keep ride level with a load on the trailer
-
Might look into some sway control like the Reese dual cam set up. It makes the big enclosed very manageable behind our Suburban.

Might not need the bags with the weight distributing .
-
Good call, Rich. I was going to mention that as well. Even when you put something like a snowmobile in the back of your truck, the headlights are aimed at the sky. Ever since that I figured I should get some air bags or 2 ton suspension. :icon_lol:
